Inaugural Festivities
On January 20, the world will witness a big historical moment, a great reason to celebrate. If your plans don't include an inaugural ball, then why not host your own celebration? Here are three ideas to get you started.
Host an Aloha 'Welcome' Party for president-elect Barack Obama's arrival to DC. Greet guests with a colorful lei and a tropical cocktail; grill some fish and serve with pineapple-mango salsa; and listen to Don Ho music.
However, it is January; the cold temps in DC are ideal for a Windy City Soiree. Create a hip, urban scene and treat guests to deep-dish pizza and great jazz music.
Or my favorite idea - All Aboard the Freedom Train. Obama, Vice President-elect Biden and their families will travel by train from Philadelphia, the birthplace of democracy, to DC for the inauguration. Why not pretend to take this grand journey with them?
The Look - patriotic, of course, but perhaps an understated yet elegant red, white and blue atmosphere.
The Taste - our great nation is a melting pot of cultures; prepare foods that represent your heritage - or dress-up take-out food. Washingtonian magazine lists 117 great take-out places (01/09)
The Sound - songs of American pride, like 'God Bless the USA' by Lee Greenwood, as well as 'The Star-Spangled Banner' and 'American the Beautiful'. Oh, and a train whistle!
The Scent - the delicious aroma of the [take-out] food
EXTRA - make your celebration 'official' with a guest appearance by Barack Obama (a 6'2" cardboard standup). Have fun, take souvenir photos of guests with our new president. |
