Ahh ... fall is here!  The weather is cooler, leaves are turning and pumpkins are popping up everywhere.  This is my favorite time of year, and like many people, I enjoy gathering friends together now, before the busy winter holidays.

This issue of party possibilities explores fall entertaining ideas, including food and drink suggestions for an Oktoberfest party.  Oktoberfest is the world's largest public festival held each year in Munich, Germany.  Started 175 years ago to honor a Bavarian prince's marriage to a beautiful princess, Oktoberfest outdoor festvities include great beer, hearty food and much merriment that lasts for 16 days.  While your party doesn't have to go on for weeks, an Oktoberfest has just the right ingredients for a lot of fall entertaining fun!

Enjoy!
Oktoberfest Food & Drinks

'Brats and Beers' are the staples of an Oktoberfest.  Hearty foods like sausages with sauerkraut and pretzels pair well with lager beers.  When researching an Oktoberfest menu recently, I didn't have to look too far for appetizing ideas.  My favorite caterer, Fusions Cuisine, offers an Autumn Oktoberfest Feast, including:

Fried Pumpkin Ravioli
Cranberry and Brie Turnovers
Grilled Bratwurst
Cabbage and Apple Slaw
German Potato Salad
Pumpkin Cheesecake & Apple Pie Tartlets
...and so much more!

When it comes to Oktoberfest drinks, premium lager beer (by Heineken or Spatan) completes this menu but you could also offer a sweet white wine, such as a Reisling, or a German red wine called Spätburgunder (a.k.a. pinot noir).

For additional Oktoberfest resources, consider the German Gourmet in Falls Church, Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe in Arlington and Whole Foods (who claims to have the best wursts in town).
