Oh Baby! Parties
May 2007

The focus of this month's party possibilities is
babies - or rather the parties we throw to celebrate
them like baby showers, welcoming parties and
religious ceremonies.
With three girls of my own, I know a little something
about babies - or at least, how to celebrate them!
We've had parties to announce the gender of our
unborn baby, open houses to introduce our newest
addition to friends and family, and also, Christenings
with baby naming. In fact, this weekend, my family is
gathering for the Christerning of my 8-month old
daughter, Kyra. Below is a portion of her interfaith
ceremony, as well as ideas for music at a baby
shower and dessert for a welcoming party.

Baby Showers
Lullabies and nursery rhymes are fine songs for a
baby shower but if the shower is for a hip mama-to-
be, then I suggest this collection of *baby* songs:
- Hey Baby ** No Doubt
- Can't Get Enough of You Baby ** Smash
Mouth
- Doing It All For My Baby ** Huey Lewis & the
News
- Tell Me Baby ** Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Can't Help Falling In Love ** Elvis
Presley
- Sweet Child of Mine ** Guns N Roses
- Don't Cry ** Seal
- Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) **
Eurhythmics
- Baby Love ** The Supremes
- Forever Young ** Rod Stewart
- Wonderful World ** Louis Armstrong

Welcome Parties
When my daughter, Amanda, was just a few weeks
old, my husband and I hosted an open house to
introduce her to our close friends. Since my baby was
so sweet (and still is!), I decided on an afternoon
dessert party complete with tea cookies, petit fours,
strawberry lemonade and a spectacular cake
designed to resemble building blocks but in
Amanda's name (above). It tasted as good as it
looked!

Christenings and Other Religious Events
Around the world, there are many traditions for
introducing babies to religious communities.
Christenings and baby namings are two examples.
To accommodate my interfaith family, I designed a
special ceremony for my daughters; a Christening to
welcome them into the Christian faith with a baby
naming to recognize their Jewish heritage.
Below is a portion of the Christening (my favorite part)
developed with Rev. Julia Jarvis, spiritual director at
the Interfaith Family Project in MD. The Blessing is
read by Julia, who dips a rose in a small bowl of water
with each statement. Babies love it!
Blessing of the Waters (Christening)
Bless Amanda's head with intelligence and
wisdom
Bless her eyes so they will see great vistas
Bless her nose with delicious and fragrant
aromas
Bless her mouth for the enjoyments of tasting and
talking-may their words always be kind and
merciful.
Bless her heart with deep love and a strong steady
beat
Bless her arms for embracing friendship and love
enthusiastically
Bless her feet so they will never tire and carry them
happily through their days
And with this blessing we christen Amanda into the
Christian community.
