A Delightful Remembrance

Recently, in corresponding with a fellow customer, he wrote about a wonderful memory he experienced during the 1940's.  It was such a perfect example of Sewing Reminisce, that I asked permission to share it with you - knowing that you would enjoy the novelty of the travel down memory lane.

I was born in 1935.  We had a corner grocery store in the mid-1940's during WWII.  We sold flour by the sacks, which came in pretty printed cambric material.  On the sack it had the motto:  "Eat the flour, wear the sack.  If not satisfied, your money back."

Can you imagine how privileged a family would be to have a nice Singer cabinet sewing machine like my 1949 yard sale machine, which I paid $50.00 for?  People in my school wore clothes made with those pretty Cambric flour sacks.

In the 1940's hitch-hiking was common.  I was hitch-hiking across South Louisiana, and caught a ride with two Cajun boys.  The radio was playing a song with French lyrics.  They asked me if I could speak French (I could not), both of them laughing at the lyrics of the song.  They translated for me that the girl was crying because she lost her drawers.  Somebody said it did not matter any way because they were made out of flour sacks.  It was a temptation to make people buy the big sacks of flour.  If you bought a big enough bag, it was almost enough material to make a shirt or pajama pants out of.  They really must have made a lot of biscuits in those years.  They must have been living on them.

I could not help but chuckle at that little memorable story and thought you would, too.

If you click on the thumbnail-sized image above, you will be able to see the larger view which is a page from a vintage booklet titled "Needle Magic with Cotton Bags".  And just for fun, at the bottom of this e-mail, you will find my all-time favorite Biscuit Recipe that would have captured that fun old slogan, "Eat the Flour, Wear the Sack!"

Enjoy!
