Hello!
Have you ever been lied to, deceived or felt betrayed? If so, you know how much it can hurt and affect your performance and spirit. If trust issues do not get resolved, the hurt will continue and possibly destroy organizations and personal relationships. Trust is extremely powerful and the foundation of performances and intimacy.
When there is trust, there is an empowered workforce and safe, intimate relationships develop. People tend to become more open and honest and less resistant to change. They feel safe and are more willing to share their ideas, innermost feelings and resolve conflicts. On the flipside, when people do not trust the people around them, they tend to become less productive and engaged because they feel unsupported and invalidated. They stop believing what they are told. This makes them stop listening and hoping that things will be different. They give up and simply go through the motions until they find the courage to let go. Individuals may be able to handle the occasional trust violation, but trust seriously erodes away when there are a series of violations. When trust is violated, it needs repaired.
How to Build and Repair Trust:
- Let go of control or enabling issues and show trust in others by delegating tasks.
- Treat mistakes as learning opportunities rather than threats to end employment or a relationship.
- Match actions with words, keep promises and behave responsibly and respectfully in social situations.
- Be honest and open with communication by sharing information and feelings - withholding causes more damage than sharing.
- Ask questions before passing judgment and making false assumptions - gather facts and look at all contributing factors before jumping to conclusions.
- Show you care by listening and validating people's needs, fears and insecurities without denying or defending your actions first - each person needs to be heard, not ignored or dismissed.
- Apologize, accept responsibility and repair violations of trust, before it's too late.
Depending on the situation or the individual, trust can come easy or take time to build. Trust cannot be taken for granted because it is the nuts and bolts of human dynamics. Without trust, continuous issues, stress and heartaches will surface until the situations can no longer be accepted or tolerated. You will start screaming, "I can't take it anymore! Enough is enough." The good news is that trust can be repaired if the violator takes responsibility and takes positive action steps towards restoration. Rebuilding trust does take time. Depending on the circumstances, it could take weeks, months or even years. If violations of trust continue to happen before healing has fully occurred, the process will take longer. If you strive for consistent, long-term, healthy changes in behavior, trust will be restored. High-performance teams will evolve and personal relationships will be safe, smooth and happy. It's never too late to trust again!
To your building trust and moving forward,
Nancy
