Do you empower the people you work and live with or
do you enable and control them? There is a
difference. A difference that is critical to make if you
want to increase productivity from all parties, have
more time in your day to complete your own "to do's"
and reduce your stress level.
Whether you are leading a team or yourself, letting go
of control, perfectionism and your ego will make you
a more collaborative leader. By not trusting others to
perform tasks on their own, creative problem solving
and "can do, does do" attitudes will be stifled. There
will be no thinking on their own. Their will be extra
interruptions in your day from their running back to
you for the answers, and even worse, for you to
complete their work! To be an
effective leader, you
must realize that your role is to coach and develop
people, not be a task master. Show them how to
accomplish their tasks. Then, empower them into
action.
How to Diligently Delegate
- Delegate projects that fit strengths and
workloads.
- Define specific expectations through 2-way
communication.
- Provide necessary resources and tools.
- Monitor progress and provide feedback, although
not daily!
- Celebrate successes.
Yes, it may be quicker for you to complete the tasks
yourself because effective delegating techniques do
take time in the short term. However, the long-term
gains are tremendous!
To your taking the lead and letting it go,
Nancy
