Dear patients, friends and colleagues,

Dr. TaubAs always we have tons to tell you! First, our Skin For Life event was a huge success! We had so much fun raising $12,000 for the Skin Cancer Foundation, being entertained by our emcee Susanna Negovan, the new Trend Editor for the Sun-Times and viewing the fabulous fashions by Zamrie, Nora Del Busto and Cettina Designs. I never realized how many Chicago designers there are and many of them have accessible clothes (meaning they are not outrageous in style - cute and wearable - and priced reasonably.) They host people at their studios for custom wear...not a bad way to go as you won't see anybody else at a function with the same outfit! We hope everyone else enjoyed it as much as we did.

Advanced Dermatology is proud to announce a new provider,David Rosen, MD, a vein specialist and is board-certified in phlebology (treatment of leg veins), internal medicine and emergency medicine. He has been practicing phlebology exclusively for the past 13 years and now we are so fortunate to have him join us. He will be in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays performing leg vein evaluations, ultrasound in conjunction with our Ultrasound Technician, Kristen Hildebrandt, RVT, and also advanced techniques in vein treatments such as endovenous laser, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins). Most of the procedures he performs are covered by medical insurance as they involve leg pain and heaviness or varicose veins. If you have any leg vein symptoms or varicose leg veins for treatment, please make an appointment with Dr. Rosen by calling the office. Additional information on Dr. Rosen and Kristen Hildebrandt are featured within this newsletter. Let's welcome Dr. Rosen to Advanced Dermatology!

We are also going to cover our usual summer topics like what is the best sunscreen, what to do for your insect bites and how to treat heat rash. Although we know that summer isn't your number one time to have laser treatments, we do still have many treatments that can be done in the summer months as they don't interfere with our tans (which we shouldn't have!!!) and don't have downtime, something we usually avoid in the summer due to how short and sweet it is. Given how wonderful the spring has been, maybe you will feel like you can share a few of your precious summer hours with us to experience ZELTIQ (fat reduction), Genesis for sundamage or redness, laser hair removal, Omnilux Acne Phototherapy (new!!!), TriPollar Apollo for body shaping and Pelleve or Thermagefor tissue tightening. All of these procedures have zero downtime, don't have any interaction with skin color and will leave you able to skip out of the office and on to your next destination without a second thought.

We are very excited about our new very own skinfo Mineral Makeup line! Lots of great colors, nice textures and smooth applications, a great makeup remover and more. AJ Khan, our newest Makeup Specialist, was instrumental in bringing this opportunity to my attention - thank you AJ!

We are offering a more advanced treatment to take the place of our SonoPeel. The Silk Peel is a double unit- microdermabrasion as well as suction with disbursement of serums. We can combine this with light chemical peels like we used to do with our Beta Peel SonoPeel, or we can do alone and tailor for each person's individual goals. Whether it is for brightening up, keeping the pores from clogging, reducing brown spots or relieving dullness, the Silk Peel is a great new addition to our lineup.

Lastly, please remember it only takes about 2 minutes to apply sunscreen to your entire body. We have seen our melanoma cases double from last year. Prevent getting a melanoma with proper sun protection.

Have a wonderful summer, stay safe and wear your sunsreen!

Best Regards, Amy Forman Taub, MD

And the Staff of Advanced Dermatology and skinfo

WelcomeRosen

We would like to introduce you to Dr. David Rosen

Dr. Rosen has spent the last few years of his career exclusively on the treatment of leg veins: varicose veins and spider veins of both men and women. One of only 520 physicians in the nation to be board-certified in phlebology, a new specialty in medicine devoted to the treatments of venous diseases in the legs, he is a wonderful addition to the Advanced Dermatology lineup of providers. So many of our patients expressed an interest in vein treatments that we invited Dr. Rosen to the practice to offer you the most advanced and non-invasive treatments of leg veins.

Dr. Rosen is also board certified in internal medicine and emergency medicine and has been in practice for 13 years. He attended medical school at Rush University School of Medicine and completed his residencies at Rush-Presbyterian and Cook County Hospitals in Chicago. In addition to Dr. Rosen we are also welcoming Advanced Dermatology's Ultrasound Technician, Kristen Hildebrandt, RVT, will be performing leg ultrasounds. Dr. Rosen will then determine, after a physician examination and review of the ultrasound findings, a treatment plan tailored to each individual. The initial evaluation/consultation and ultrasound (a non-invasive treatment with no discomfort or downtime) are covered by the majority of insurance companies, including Medicare, after the deductible is met. Many of the treatment approaches are also covered by insurance, assuming deductibles have been met and if a medical cause of the vein disease can be determined.

Dr. Rosen is warm and welcoming just are you are used to at Advanced Dermatology.  His careful, thoughtful, thorough and yet cutting-edge approach fits in well with the direction and vision of Advanced Dermatology.  Please don't hesiate to call for an appointment to have your leg veins evaluated!

Bug Bites and Stings by Steven Prus, PA-C With summer in full swing and outdoor activities on the rise, it is more important than ever to protect and treat our skin appropriately. In addition to our usual concerns of protecting skin from damaging ultraviolet rays, we need to be aware of other more terrestrial threats that our skin may encounter during our time spent outdoors. Protecting against insect bites and stings is important to both our skin's and our general health. We all know that bug bites can be itchy and annoying, and worse, stings can be quite painful, but oftentimes we may be exposed to insects that can spread infection and disease as well.

When we think about summer insect bites, most of us will imagine itchy mosquito bites. These bites can be bothersome and usually harmless. The itching from mosquito bites can be treated with oral anti-histamine such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or with over-the counter cortisone cream. Dr. Taub says that applying clear nail polish to the bites stops the itching. However, especially for the very young or elderly, mosquitoes may spread dangerous infection due to West Nile virus. Most healthy people will be relatively unaffected by this virus, but clinically significant infection may occur in those with weakened immunity. In some cases, West Nile viral infection can lead to hospitalization and in rare cases even death. In addition, mosquito bites that are scratched excessively can lead to secondary bacterial infection, especially in children.

Tick bites are another frequent summer threat. Unlike mosquitoes, ticks "latch-on" to us for as long as several days. Most tick bites are harmless, but some ticks may spread diseases. For example, local deer ticks (see photo inset) can spread Lyme disease to humans. In addition, travelers to Western states are at risk for developing Rocky Mountain spotted fever from tick bites. Ticks may be as small as a sesame seed to as large as a small pea. It is important to search for ticks on the skin and scalp after spending time outdoors in grassy or wooded areas. Usually tick bites are painless and not noticed by the victim. After time spent outdoors, it is important to check for ticks that may have latched on to the unsuspecting host. Pay extra attention to skin-fold areas such as behind the knee, the groin area and the underarm, and don't forget to check the scalp. Ticks can be removed by grasping the head with tweezers and pulling straight away from the skin. Be sure not to leave any part of the tick in the skin. If you need assistance with tick removal, call Advanced Dermatology for an urgent-care visit and you will be seen for a same-day appointment. If someone has a red rash around a tick bite or experiences fever, muscle or joint aches, rashes, or flu-like symptoms, it is very important to seek medical attention to evaluate for possible infection.

Insect stings are another common summer threat to our skin. Unlike bites, which give an insect a meal, stings are a defensive or offensive mechanism for an insect. Bees, wasps, and ants cause most insect stings in the United States. Insect stings can be quite painful and cause a local or systemic reaction. Some people can have life-threatening reactions to insect stings. Such individuals should have an epinephrine auto-injector available when outdoors in the summer months. Fortunately, most victims of insect stings can use cortisone creams or take pain medications and symptoms should resolve within hours to a couple of days.

As with many things in healthcare, prevention has a much higher value than treatment. Preventing insect bites and stings can best be achieved by using insect repellents containing DEET. The higher the percentage of DEET in the repellent, the longer it will be effective. Repellent may be applied to both skin and clothing, and special care should be exercised to avoid contact with the eyes or inhalation of the spray.

Heat Rash by Emily Oehler, PA-C, also known as prickly heat or miliaria is a common ailment in the hot humid months of summer. The rash occurs when the sweat glands become plugged and sweat is trapped in the skin. This leads to inflammation. Heat rash presents with red bumps and dryness of the skin. Itchiness or a prickly feeling in the area of the rash may also occur. Heat rash is most common in infants but can occur in adults. In infants, heat rash is often caused by well-intentioned parents over bundling the infant in too heavy of a blanket or too many clothes in the summer months. In adults, intense exercise with excessive sweating may lead to heat rash especially if the clothing worn does not allow adequate air circulation. Treatment for heat rash primarily consists of cooling the skin. Prescription strength cortisone creams may be needed to clear the rash. Watch for pustules, persistent rash, or worsening redness as these may be signs an infection is present. Infection can occur if bacteria gets trapped in the sweat glands. If any of these symptoms are seen, an antibiotic may be needed for treatment. Prevention is the best treatment and begins with allowing the skin to be exposed to circulating air, wearing breathable clothing and avoiding exercise in hot humid weather.

Acne Solutions by Anna Drathring, LE

Acne is a skin concern that affects men, women, girls and boys of all ages. There are three simple steps you can take to prevent and treat blemishes!

1) Cleansing the skin properly. Choose a cleanser with an exfoliator to treat and prevent blocked pores. skinfo Essential Cleanser ($18) contains 2% Salicylic to kill bacteria and control oil as well as 5% Glycolic Acid to exfoliate dead skin cells.

2) Kill the bacteria that causes acne by using skinfo Clear Skin Gel 5% ($11), a non-irritating benzoyl peroxide that is highly effective against the acne bacteria.

3) Keep the skin balanced! The skin needs to stay neutral - not too oily and not too dry. Since acne treatments can be drying, use skinfo Vita Lite Moisturizer ($24), one of our most popular sellers, to rebalance the skin.

NOW some advanced steps once you master the basics! Get rid of red and brown marks where the pimples were by using glo-*Therapeutics Healing Gel ($32) that uses Niacinamide, an ingredient to minimize inflammation. SPF is an important part in an acne regimen because it prevents the blemishes from scarring once they heal. EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 ($29) is super lightweight and has a neutral tint, which will help with any redness. Use The Tanda Zap ($49), which kills bacteria AND reduces inflammation. This at home device uses blue light, heat and sonic vibration to get to the root of the blemish and shrink it.

Best Sun Protection for Summer by Anna Drathling, LE

With summer weather comes longer daylight hours. And that means wearing your SPF to protect your skin! Your sunscreen should have at least an SPF of 30 and contain a minimum of 5% Zinc Oxide.

* EltaMDUV Aero Broad Spectrum SPF 45 ($29.50)This SPF 45 contains 9.3% Zinc Oxide and is an oil free formula!

* Kinerase Advanced Ultra Light Day Repair SPF 30 ($50),with 5% Zinc Oxide, is great for a daily SPF! It contains Kinetin and Zeatin, so you are also getting antioxidants, to protect the skin and growth factors to stimulate collagen!

* For on the go re-application of your SPF, try Colorescience SPF 30 or 50, powdered sunscreen ($50), with 12% Zinc Oxide and 12% Titanium Oxide! Put this in your car or purse for instant no-hassle and non-greasy reapplication. Are you listening golf and tennis players? This powder comes in 3 shades; light, medium and dark! So there's a match for every skin tone!

Looking for an alternative or a product that can be used in conjunction with a retinoid to elevate results?

Use the Tanda Luxe, Red Light Technology, to achieve younger and firmer skin.

Tanda Luxe (660nm red SLD light) performs a few things similar to a retinoid skin care routine:

- thickens the base of the epidermis (plumps/firms the skin)

- stimulates fibroblast activity leading to collagen growth (fills in wrinkles)

- increases circulation in the treated area (gives a healthy glow).

Now here is where the red light (660 nm) differs from retinoids on the skin:

- Red Light (660nm) is anti-inflammatory and will not cause irritation like retinoids can.

And, by using the Tanda Luxe as part of a skin care regimen involving retinoids, you may see a quicker anti-aging result using the light and retinoids together. The red light may help to reduce the inflammation associated with retinoid use.
