Dear patients, friends and colleagues,
I hope you had time this summer to create memories with family, friends, and four-legged companions. I enjoyed looking through the photos some of you posted on our Facebook page of you pictured with your sunscreen. See, we can have summer fun and still be protected!
As always, we have new technology to introduce you to: an exciting addition to our treatment lineup and new practice software.
Our new treatment technology is called ePrimeTMand we are one of the first offices in the US to feature this equipment. The energy of the ePrimeTM is radiofrequency, a modality we use here every day, so we understand it well. Due to the novel way the ePrimeTM delivers that energy, we are able to accomplish one-third the effects of an actual face lift, without surgery! (see Aesthetic Dermatology News)
The next new technology is our deployment of NexTech, an electronic medical record software. We implemented phase I (practice management ) by late August and will be starting phase II (medical record) in fall/winter.
Our NexTech representative told us that we were the fastest of their offices to adopt the practice management software and get back to our routine. Not surprising; we have been using computerized systems since we opened in 2003. This will help us in ways we can't even fathom yet but will include: better communication with you and your primary care physician, ability to check on eligibility of procedures in real time and tell you how much you will be responsible for out of pocket, ability to search by medication if there should be any new information about a particular drug or by diagnosis if there are advances. It will reduce your need for filling out forms, and we won't have to repeat information already captured. Spending more time with you and focusing on your care in a more efficient way has always been our end goal. There will be a transition for all of us, and during this time we appreciate any and all feedback as we become adept at using this new tool.
Communicating with you is of vital importance to us. We want to be accessible in a timely manner. You have told us we are improving in this area since we have committed to more staff to answer the phones and incorporated our online portal through Relay Health. But we always want to do more, so give us suggestions - we are always looking for ways to make your experience with us a more pleasant and efficient one.
Please come to our Open House this year on November 9th. We have goodies, prizes, info and fun. This year's theme is "The New Natural," emphasizing our commitment to natural-looking cosmetic results and healthful medical solutions. Stay warm, use your moisturizer and turn up your humidifier!
Best Regards, Amy Forman Taub, MD

ePrimeTM ePrimeTM is a device that uses radiofrequency to tighten the skin but also to create more volume by increasing the amount of collagen and elastic tissue. It has been shown to accomplish one-third of what a surgical face-lift can.
Results from the ePrimeTM can usually be achieved in one single treatment. When you arrive at the office, you will receive local anesthetic to the areas being treated. During the treatment you will not feel any pain as with the anesthetic there is usually no discomfort.
The ePrimeTM is a machine utilizing a hand piece with a disposable cartridge made up of an array of radiofrequency energy needles. The hand piece is then placed by a doctor or physician assistant on the areas that have been pre-determined and marked off to enhance the effect. Then, the needles penetrate into the skin and release heat set a precise temperature for a specific amount of time. By heating these cells to this temperature (70 degrees C for 4 seconds) each pulse stimulates a formation of new tissue both collagen elastic fibers as well as tightening existing tissue.
There is considerable swelling of the face for 2-7 days. There may be some bruising from the anesthetic injections. Usually, some effect is apparent in as little as one week but the best results develop over a 3-6 month period. For full information or to see if you are a candidate, please schedule a cosmetic consultation appointment with us.

Psoriasis As the colder and drier weather approaches, many individuals will notice a worsening of their skin conditions. Those who deal with psoriasis often notice a quite substantial worsening of their symptoms. Psoriasis is an inherited condition which can affect the skin, joints, and potentially other organ systems. Although psoriasis of the skin has traditionally been viewed as a troublesome but otherwise benign condition, experts are now learning that psoriasis needs to be evaluated with a more critical eye with respect to general health status.
In the skin, psoriasis usually produces thickened, itchy and scaly plaques. Involved areas of skin are also often very red and inflamed. This is due to inappropriate activation of the immune system. Normally, the immune system serves to protect us from disease-causing microorganisms. However, those with psoriasis may harbor a tendency toward excessive inflammation. Generally, inflammation in the skin is clearly visible, but inflammation that occurs internally may be unnoticed.
Recently, by studying large groups of people over many years, researchers have uncovered a statistically significant link between a diagnosis of psoriasis and increased risk of heart disease. In fact, the data even showed a correlation between severity of psoriasis in the skin and degree of increased risk of heart disease. Those individuals with more severe psoriasis had an even greater relative risk of heart disease when compared to those with milder psoriasis. Although this information does not imply that psoriasis causes heart disease, it does make medical experts wonder if the diagnosis of psoriasis in a patient should be thought of as a risk factor for the development of heart disease.
The next natural question is whether patients with active psoriasis can decrease their relative risk of developing heart disease by treating their psoriasis. If it is found that treating psoriasis lessens the relative risk of developing heart disease, then healthcare providers will need to take a fresh look at psoriasis treatment. Until this question is further explored and ultimately answered, it may be prudent for healthcare providers to be more proactive with psoriasis treatment. Certainly most people with psoriasis seek medical treatment to alleviate their skin symptoms, but if treating psoriasis can improve one's general health status, then the battle against psoriasis needs to be taken to a higher level.
At Advanced Dermatology, we utilize all of the most current medications in the treatment of psoriasis as well as the XTrac laser. If you think you may have psoriasis and would like to be evaluated, please call Advanced Dermatology for an appointment with one of our providers.
Photorejuvenation for Rosacea and Photodamaged Skin Photodamaged skin often appears dull and wrinkled with an over abundance of brown spots and redness. Photodamaged skin can be corrected with a procedure called photorejuvenation. Rosacea often presents as generalized redness, flushing, acne-like breakouts or small blood vessels appearing in facial skin. These symptoms can also be improved with the procedure called photorejuvenation. Photorejuvenation uses intense pulsed light and radio-frequency through a series of treatments to reduce redness, small blood vessels and brown spots in the skin. This treatment also delivers heat into the skin to promote new collagen formation which leaves the skin tighter and more radiant. When treating skin with an over abundance of redness or small blood vessels, another laser called Vbeam Perfecta may be used in addition to traditional photorejuvenation to maximize the reduction of the redness and blood vessels in the skin. When treating oily skin, skin with sebaceous gland hyperplasia or skin with pre-cancerous cells, a photosensitizing solution called Levulan may be applied to the skin prior to the photorejuvenation procedure to improve these conditions. When considering to undergo a procedure like photorejuvenation, it is best to have the treatments performed when the skin is not tanned and during a time of limited sun exposure. For most people, winter is the optimal time of year. Consider a series of photorejuvenation this winter to have your skin glowing and more radiant by spring.
Eczema Get ready for winter and tune up your eczema care. You should have these things for all phases of eczema treatment:
· A barrier cream or moisturizer. The two we love best are prescription products Hyalatopic Plus and Epiceram. These protect the surface of the skin from irritants and water evaporation.
· A moisturizer and mild cleanser. We favor the Avene products. These are made with spring water from Avene, France, which is visited by people all over the world to bathe in the waters there to heal. These products, including moisturizers, cleansers and bath oil are fragrance free, very soothing and effective and also modestly priced.
· Prescription anti-inflammatory creams. These include topical steroids and topical immunomodulators (Protopic, Elidel). You will need this for flares of your disease as well as maintenance.
· Anti-bacterial cleansers. This is not just an antibacterial soap but one that kills staph bacteria, as it has been shown that people with eczema have an increased number of staph bacteria on their skin which contributes to their eczema. This can be accomplished with bleach baths (1 tsp of bleach per bathtub of water- be careful not to get in eyes) 2 times per week, chlorhexidine cleanser daily and/or Auristat Bleach Gel, which comes in the package with Hyalatopic Plus.
SOMETHING NEW AND IMPORTANT - The XTrac laser was approved by the FDA for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (eczema)!!! We have had very good results with this for psoriasis, now if your eczema is not controlled with the other measures outlined above, we could potentially use this laser, which we will pre-authorize with your insurance company. If your eczema is not well controlled or you haven't been in the office for a while, please come in soon before the winter season hits so we can be proactive and "weatherproof" your skin.

How to Achieve the Perfect Brow
Waxing at Skinfo is done with either an Amber sensitive skin wax or a thin hard wax. The amber wax is applied in one small section at a time then removed with a pellon strip. Thin hard wax is gentle enough for the most sensitive skin as it does not adhere to the skin as firmly as a soft wax. The thin hard wax removes the hair simply by pulling the hardened wax against the hair growth.
Eyebrow Shaping Tips
Beautifully shaped eyebrows frame the face and create a polished look. But it's easy to make mistakes when you do it yourself. The most common mistake is over-tweezing into a thin, high, rounded eyebrow that gives your face a permanently surprised look.
Shaping your eyebrows is best left to a professional. Teenagers should be instructed on proper maintenance early before over tweezing.
Generally the eyebrows should not extend past the inner corner of the eye. Arch should be well thought out and customized to flatter your face. You can make the most of your eyebrows by tinting grays or light hair.
Fill in sparse eyebrows as needed by tinting, with an eyebrow powder, or a eyebrow liner. Follow up with a clear mascara to keep your eyebrows in line. Finish by highlighting under the brow with a concealor or makeup highlighter.
Pros and Cons of Eyebrow Shaping The only problem with eyebrow shaping is the slight pain. For sensitive people we can trim the hairs closely to obtain a polished look absolutely pain free.
Most feel the benefit of creating a perfectly framed face with eyebrow shaping far outweighs a little temporary discomfort.
