Dear patients, friends and colleagues,
Happy Summer! We all enjoy sunny blue skies and warm Summer nights. Our skin however does not respond in the same manner to the hot and humid Chicago weather. We need to protect and nourish our skin so that the weather doesn't interfere with our increased outdoor activities. Read our articles in Medical and Aesthetic Dermatology News to learn how to best care for your skin and how to treat any common skin conditions that develop during this hot season.
We continue to find better communication methods and programs so that we may provide you with optimal care. This Spring we installed a new phone system that has greatly improved the pace of our communication system. Additionally we have officially joined the world of social media. If you are tuned into this exciting new world, you have the opportunity to hear news faster and receive exclusive promotions from our businesses.
Make sure you "like" Advanced Dermatology and skinfo® on Facebook and "follow" Advanced Dermatology, skinfo® and SKINQRI on Twitter to join our new methods of communication. Our future plans also include secure patient online portals for another method of communication and more robust EMR and practice management software and photography programs. We appreciate your patience while we modify these systems to improve your comprehensive care.
We are happy to announce that Dr. Cara Garretson will have completed her Cosmetic and Research Fellowship in August and at that point will be joining our team as a full-time Associate Physician. Dr. Garretson will be seeing both medical and cosmetic patients.
We are also excited to announce that Lauren Fine, MD will be joining us in late July as our new Cosmetic and Research Fellow and Associate Dermatologist. Dr. Fine will be seeing medical patients on Thursdays and Saturdays. Dr. Fine, originally from the Chicago area, received her BS from Duke University and medical degree from Rush University Medical School. She will be completing her residency this Summer from John H. Stroger Cook County Hospital. We welcome Dr. Fine as a part of our team!
We do have some sad goodbyes to share as well. Dr. Victoria Wang has already completed her year with our practice and will be returning to her home town, San Diego. I know many of you came to enjoy Dr. Wang as your physician. We were very fortunate to have had her practice with us for the year. We congratulate Dr. Wang also on her new job and also the birth of her baby boy!
Shannon Morrow, PA-C, one of our dermatology Physician Assistants, will be leaving our practice at the end of June. Shannon has been with us since our formation, 8 years ago, and has been a strong leader in the growth and vision of our practice. She has provided our practice the opportunity to care for many more patients and clients than I could have done alone. Shannon is looking forward to spending more time with her family as she continues her career closer to home. We wish Shannon all the best with her family and career.
I am excited to announce that skinfo® has donated to the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day in April and to the Skin Cancer Foundation in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May. We thank all of our clients who contributed to the success of these donations and look forward to contributing again in the near future.
Please continue to fight to prevent skin cancer this Summer! Wear sunscreen, antioxidants and sun protective clothing daily. Avoid the sun during peak hours 10am-2pm. Schedule an annual body check with a dermatology provider and tell your loved ones to do the same. In the United States alone, there has been an alarming increase in the incidence of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer over the past few years, which we have also observed in our practice. Before you go running off into the sun, please remember that you have the chance to be proactive and protect yourself from skin cancer, unlike many other types of cancer. Enjoy the sun, but be sun smart! Wishing you a safe, fun & healthy Summer,
Best Regards, Amy Forman Taub, MDAnd the Staff of Advanced Dermatology, Skinfo and SKINQRI. |

Leg Veins As Summer rolls around and we start to break out the shorts, many of us might actually wish for that long-pant weather when we take a look at the veins on our legs. As we get older, it is not uncommon to have numerous telangiectasias, or spider veins, develop on our legs. Over the years, as we work hard and spend much time on our feet, our veins may begin to weaken, leading to the development of many small vessels just under the skin. Fortunately, there are ways to remove these unsightly veins, including sclerotherapy and laser leg vein removal, both of which can be done at Advanced Dermatology. These therapies can treat not only the small spider veins but also the larger blue reticular veins. Though laser treatment and sclerotherapy vary in their approach to targeting those troublesome areas, both can give fantastic results. Call today to schedule an evaluation and take a confident step towards beautiful legs.
Hair Removal Excessive hair growth is one of the most common problems many of us face. Given the advances in technology, it is now possible to have permanent hair reduction with laser hair removal. No longer should you have to deal with the constant plucking, waxing, or shaving and their troublesome side effects. Laser hair removal provides a more effective solution to the problem and can safely treat all skin areas and all skin types. Since hair grows in cycles, it does take a series of treatments to reach that goal so schedule your consultation soon and kiss the tweezers, wax and razor goodbye!
Body Contouring and Cellulite Many of our clients are concerned about concealing their shape and cellulite during the Summer months. Lipotherme, VelaShape and Thermage are effective therapies, available at Advanced Dermatology, that can improve body contour and skin laxity and/or smooth away unwanted cellulite, with minimal to no downtime. Lipotherme laser lipolysis is a revolutionary procedure that combines minimally invasive focal liposuction with heat therapy to reduce unwanted pockets of fat. In addition to removing unwanted fat, Lipotherme's thermal effect causes the skin to tighten, resulting in firmer, smoother skin that enhances the body shape. VelaShape features combination of heat (bi-polar radiofrequency), light (Infrared Light), plus vacuum and mechanical massage. The net result increases the metabolism of stored energy, increases lymphatic drainage and reduces the size of the actual fat chamber which reduces cellulite. The precise heating ensures a safe, effective, fast treatment with no downtime. Thermage utilizes a unique form of heat called monopolar capacitive radiofrequency technology to tighten existing collagen and stimulate new collagen production. Thermage can be used to smooth away cellulite while decreasing skin laxity. The Thermage procedure is also fast, easy and requires no downtime. Complement these treatments with topical at-home therapy from skinfo®. We offer multiple creams by Mesoestetic and PrescribedSolutions which can be used to smooth away cellulite as well as maintain the results of the treatments.
Advanced Aesthetic Facial Therapies Many clients ask why our facials are so unique. The truth is there are a multitude of reasons why a facial can be different from one spa or salon or cosmetic dermatology practice to another. What is most unique at Advanced Dermatology is our mission, our approach and our skincare product quality and selection that are blended together to create the total client experience. Our mission is to provide the most comprehensive effective treatment to achieve each client's unique skincare goals. Our licensed estheticians and cosmetologists perform a thorough history and examination of each client's skin health and design a facial to suit their needs. Through consultation and evaluation one of the 12 Aesthetic Facials is decided upon by the client and provider. As you are relaxing in our spa beds, we apply advanced professional skincare products to the skin that are formulated to penetrate deeper into the skin for more effective results. We choose from over 500 products which have been evaluated by our staff for their unique ingredient characteristics to improve specific skin concerns such as oiliness or dryness, sun damage, acne, anti-aging, hydration, uneven tone and texture. The skincare applied is also more concentrated than can be received in a spa or salon environment and must be used under the care of a trained medical office. After an hour of relaxation comprised of cleansing, toning, masking, facial and hand massages, and boosts of soothing serums, hydrators, and of course sun protection, your skin is nourished and glowing! To top the experience, we educate our clients on the steps they need to take to maintain their healthy, youthful skin and complement each facial with a skincare regimen to amplify their results. As a monthly lifestyle routine or for that special treat, everyone can benefit from an Aesthetic Facial at Advanced Dermatology. And don't forget, these can all be boosted with more advanced options such as mild chemical peels, hydrating water microdermabrasions and ultrasound facials.

The quick in-office procedure was done on Friday; I was walking the next day, and back to work on Monday! After a month my pants fit and looked better on me and I felt so much better about myself. I highly recommend this great alternative to reduce unwanted fat and tighten the skin with almost no downtime!" ~ Age 48

 | Billing 103 What is a deductible? Most patients have a deductible to meet before their insurance company will start making payments on claims; this can be applicable to office visits and/or when procedures are done. Your deductible has to be met regardless of the diagnosis. For example: some patients believe that a mole removal will be covered since it's cancerous and not benign, however this is not the case. You must meet your deductible first no matter what the diagnosis is. It is the patient's responsibility to know how much their deductible is since we do not have access to their health plan. Patients can call our billing department for an estimated figure on how much your procedure will cost.
Summer Skin Rashes Now that Summer is here, there are several rashes that are worse or more noticeable in the warmer months. Here are several:
- Tinea versicolor This rash is caused by an increase in yeast in the skin more noticeable in warmer months when people are getting more tan. Usually this presents with many light, dark or red spots on the back and chest.
- Polymorphous Light Eruption This is a recurring rash every Spring/Summer or during vacation months in areas that are exposed to the sun (commonly face, neck, chest, and arms). The rash is caused by an inherited "allergy" to the sun and usually consists of red itchy bumps that start several hours after sunlight exposure. It is very common; up to 1 out of 5 people have this condition.
- Poison Ivy Rash is caused by poison ivy, a three-leafed plant. Outdoor activities or work can lead to this extremely itchy rash which is usually on body parts that are not covered by clothing. Blisters can also occur in severe cases.
- Intertrigo This rash is more common in the folds (armpits, groin or under the breasts) and worse with humidity. It can be caused by irritation and yeast overgrowth.
There are good treatments for all of the above conditions. If you notice them in yourself or family members, call to schedule a medical visit with one of our providers.
Conditions of the Feet Watch out for these common issues that pop up during the Summer months, because we need to be extra careful to avoid the spread of these conditions. They are infectious (warts/molluscum caused by a virus; athletes foot caused by fungus) and individuals can get them from pool decks, locker room floors and sharing of towels. To avoid infection and cross contamination, wear pool shoes as much as possible and never share towels. These conditions need to be treated immediately due to risk of contagion and discomfort. There are many new therapies available to treat these Summer ailments, so if you suffer from any of these please call us to schedule an appointment for evaluation and treatment.
Safe Sun and Skin Cancer Prevention Sorry to always be harping on the same old story but it is so important! Many people truly don't realize that getting sun is NOT just from laying out in the sun. If you are actively playing an outdoor sport (eg: golf, tennis or other) or you are gardening, walking, biking or just going from here to there, you are exposed to the sun. Even in your car, the longer wavelengths of light called UVA rays are reaching any skin that isn't covered or protected with sunscreen. Yes, it is only "a couple of minutes" from your car to work and back again, but the "couple of minutes" day after day and year after year, do add up. For example, hold out your arm straight in front of you (without sleeves on). Look at the back of your arm and you will probably see some brown spots, a slightly rougher texture or more wrinkled skin. Now look at the underside or inside of your arm. That area is inadvertently sun protected because when you walk around your arms are by your side and the inside is shielded from the direct rays of the sun. What you will see there is smoother, less wrinkled skin with less mottled pigmentation. These two areas of skin are chronologically both the same age, yet look completely different! It isn't age, you see, it is the sun that really beats up our skin and makes the skin less firm, the wrinkles and the brown spots more prominent. Most importantly the sun also causes skin cancer! If you really can see that then you will understand the need for constant sun protection year round. Every little bit helps!
Experts say that skin cancer is at epidemic proportions now! The chance of developing melanoma (which can be fatal) is increased by 75% by usage of tanning booths and even if it is not constant use! Allowing your teens to go into a tanning booth is like giving them a pack of cigarettes, something that I know none of you would ever do.
We have many great sun protection options for those that don't like the feel or smell of traditional sunscreen. Please read New Products by skinfo® for specific recommendations on how to protect your skin!
Lastly, remember to see your dermatology provider for an annual total skin exam. Most of you see your Primary Care Physician for an annual check-up to ensure your internal systems and organs are healthy and functioning properly. Dermatology providers do the same in checking to make sure your skin, the largest organ of the body, is healthy. If abnormal or suspicious, these lesions can be removed or treated, thus preventing and often treating skin cancer.
Melasma and Treatment Options Melasma is a skin condition presenting as brown patches on the face predominantly affecting women. A change in hormonal status such as taking birth control pills or pregnancy often triggers it to appear. Melasma is more apparent during and after periods of sun exposure and less obvious in winter months when sun exposure is lacking. Because of this, protecting the skin from the sun is essential. Wearing a SPF 30 or higher with zinc oxide daily and reapplying sun screen throughout the day is most important. There are many treatment options for patients with melasma. Using topical agents to improve and prevent the brown pigment is mandatory in order to see improvement. Speak with an estheticians in skinfo® for a recommendation of a sunscreen and lightening agent. Another option for treating melasma is Fraxel Re:store. Fraxel Re:store is a laser treatment done in the office to reduce the brown pigment associated with melasma. A series of laser treatments are provided over the entire face, to gradually blend the skin pigment and also improve the texture. The combination of a thorough skincare regimen and Fraxel Re:store treatments is an extremely effective approach to melasma with minimal downtime. Call for a consultation now to prevent your pigment from deepening this Summer!

The gel's micronized formula allows for better absorption of the active ingredient, leading to faster clinical results. Also formulated with hydrators and moisturizers, Tretinoin Gel 0.05% is perfect for mature sun-damaged skin.
Sun Protection Guidance It is necessary to apply sunscreen everyday even though it may seem a nuisance. This must be taught at a young age as part of our self-care. We wake up, wash our face, brush our teeth and put on our sunscreen!
Make sure to apply a SPF30+ with at least 5% zinc oxide for optimal protection. When in the sun, reapply every 2 hours as it tends to be worn, sweat or swum off. Also, apply liberally. Many people apply less than what is recommended and then do not achieve the full SPF level as noted on the packaging. Application should be an ounce, a shot glass size, if covering an adult entire body.
If you don't like creams, use powdered sunscreen called Colorescience Sunforgettable, one of the most effective products in the skin care industry. You can't even see the powder! Perfect for on the go and reapplication when you are on the golf course, tennis courts or at a ballgame. Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF50 goes on as a clear liquid that will be sure to please. Another favorite is EltaMD Body Moisturizer SPF30+ that feels and smells more like regular moisturizer than a sunscreen.
Other methods to help include Coolibar or Sun:SOUL hats (the wider brimmed the better), sun protective clothing (great for extended sun exposure like beaches, boating and pools) and antioxidants which capture the damaging chemicals caused by the suns rays and neutralize them. Antioxidants are ingredients like topical vitamins C and E and green tea polyphenols. You can find them in skinfo® under many names such as skinfo® Vital Tea Buzz SerumorCream, SkinCeuticals C E FerulicandPhloretin. These products are powerful extenders of the protection that sunscreen can provide.
