Dear patients, friends and colleagues,
Hopefully a few daffodils and tulips are going to start blooming shortly. The sun is peeking out more and the days will soon be longer. We have been busy trying to improve our communications with you. We are upgrading our phone system and planning to choose a vendor to enable us to also communicate with you via the internet privately and efficiently. We are hopeful we will have details for you in our next newsletter. In Aesthetic Dermatology News, read about many technological advancements. Learn how to take care of your eyes during allergy season and about another new development with Thermage to improve its effectiveness and comfort during treatment. We will also tell you a bit more about our new procedure for acne scarring- the combination of Matrix IR and Matrix RF, a procedure we have helped to develop for Syneron Medical, LTD. In face, on Feb. 22, 2010 Syneron announced that its eMatrix "heat-based system has received" FDA "approval to be used to smooth facial wrinkles." We are excited to announce the development of fillers that have anesthetic blended in! This should mean less pain, less time preparing for the treatments with anesthetic cream on your face and less needles!! If fear of pain has held you back, we hope this development will make you feel more comfortable about this important procedure. 3 years ago I had an idea about how using a larger volume of filler could be documented to make people truly appear younger. So, I embarked on a study to prove it; and it has just been published in Dermatologic Surgery- both cosmetic dermatologists and the patients thought there was on average a 6-9 year reduction in their apparent age... 6-9 years!! Would you like to look 6-9 years younger? I do think that using fillers for cosmetic enhancement is one of the most effective and important procedures. Please remember that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. We have had an extraordinary number of melanomas diagnosed in the past 6 months. Read our piece on tanning booths and how they can contribute to skin cancer in the Medical News section. I am especially gratified that there seems to be an increased awareness of the dangers of this, especially for our teenage girls who are the number one clients of tanning facilities. As usual, dermatologic innovations continue at a rapid pace; and we are trying to keep pace with them and in some cases trying to lead the pack. We are humbled and honored by the fact you choose us as your expert skin care providers. Hope you have a wonderful Spring!
Best Regards, Amy Forman Taub, MDAnd the Staff of Advanced Dermatology, Skinfo and SKINQRI. |

Acne Scarring: New Methods of Treatment Acne scars have diverse shapes, depths, and types which make them difficult to treat. Procedures including dermabrasion in the 1980's to modern-day full-face laser resurfacing have been tried, many times requiring multiple procedures with prolonged downtime to get results. We have been conducting a clinical trial for Syneron Medical, LTD to help them develop the eMatrix, the first device that uses radiofrequency for resurfacing instead of laser for the treatment of acne scars. This procedure employs two devices, the Matrix IR, which is Radiofrequency and Infrared Light, for the deeper scars and the Matrix RF for all over textural improvement and scar reduction. Although enrollment in the trial is full, and we cannot disclose the results just yet, we are already offering this procedure to our patients and are enthusiastic about the results we have seen in practice, especially the low amount of downtime. Schedule a consult with one of our cosmetic coordinators today to see if eMatrix is right for you.
Reduce Wrinkles with Ease - Dermal Fillers Combined with Anesthetic The FDA has recently approved a new innovation for treating facial wrinkles and folds: hyaluronic acid dermal fillers mixed with lidocaine, an anesthetic used to minimize discomfort by numbing the skin. These fillers are injected into the skin to smooth away facial wrinkles and plump areas of volume loss producing a youthful result. Most of you know these fillers best by the names Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm. Previously, most patients required topical and sometimes local anesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable. The combination of lidocaine mixed with the hyaluronic acid is very beneficial because it makes the injection of the filler significantly more comfortable, with less "numbing" time required. These fillers now are available in this new formulation. Currently, hyaluronic fillers are the number one fillers used in the marketplace worldwide due to their safety, longevity and natural result. Now we are able to achieve the same beautiful result of a natural more youthful appearance with comfort and ease.
It's Eyes Allergy Season...Wake Up Your Eyes! Allergy season can be tough on your eyes. Between the itching, swelling and redness you can feel like you look ten years older! Of course oral antihistamines or prescription allergy medications can help but there are other ways to soothe the delicate skin around the eyes too. There are many cosmeceutical eye creams that will help to hydrate the skin and reduce puffiness. Skinceuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex helps to reduce swelling and improve dark circles as well as prevent elastin breakdown. The Eyes Have Iteye gel from PRESCRIBEDSolutions can be boosted with specialty serums to compliment any ailment you may have in the area. These are just two of the great eye creams available in Skinfo so stop in to discuss with our licensed aestheticians today! Finally if you just want to wake up those tired eyes by doing in-office treatments consider a hyaluronic acid filler like Juvederm or Restylane to fill in volume loss and a wrinkle relaxer like BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport to soften the lines around the eyes... You'll look younger in under 30 minutes! Schedule a consult today to find out how you can brighten the eye area and look fresher this Spring.
Smooth Sensations Imagine... smooth, tight skin and a more youthful tone with no surgery and minimal discomfort. Finally it's here! Thermage, the leader in non-invasive skin tightening therapy, has developed its newest handpiece - the CPT (Comfort Pulse Technology). CPT adds vibration to the traditional approach of skin tightening to significantly improve patient comfort which in turn yields better results. Thermage utilizes radio-frequency (or heat) technology to stimulate your body's collagen to firm and tighten the treated skin. Previously in order to get great results, the heat level often exceeded a comfortable level, making the treatment duration less enjoyable. Now, with the introduction of the vibratory mode, the vibration confuses the skin's sensation of the heat which allows more therapeutic energy across the treatment area. The results are more impactful and often improve over a 6 month period of time following treatment. Thermage can be used to tighten and contour skin on body parts, including the eyes, neck, tummy, arms, hands, thighs, and buttocks. Thermage CPT is now the gold standard in non-invasive procedures for a more natural, younger looking appearance.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States? Many skin cancers are caused by sun damage, although a few are hereditary. We recommend that everyone receives one baseline evaluation of their moles and lesions by a dermatologist. They will provide a thorough examination and educate regarding prevention. We also recommend dermatologist visits for any new, changing, or non-healing lesions. Patients with a history of suspicious or abnormal lesions are recommended to have annual body checks. Also, if someone in your family has had a skin cancer, please make an appointment for a skin cancer screening.
Friendly Reminder - Tanning Bed Myths Tanning beds were a major focus for the FDA in 2009 continuing into 2010. The FDA now has a web page dedicated to the risks of indoor tanning. Recently the Federal Trade Commission ordered the International Tanning Association to stop its false advertising about the health benefits and safety of tanning salons. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports that women who use tanning beds more than once a month are 55% more likely to develop melanoma. As more research is being shown about the dangers of tanning beds, we explain some of the most common tanning bed myths below:
"I can't get skin cancer from indoor tanning; it is a "safe" tan" FALSE. Indoor tanning beds emit both UVA and UVB rays. In July 2009, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), moved tanning beds into the highest risk category for humans, "carcinogenic". Exposure to UV rays increases your chance for skin cancer.
"The bulbs don't emit UVB rays, so I won't burn" FALSE. Indoor tanning beds emit both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays, often referred to as burning rays, are still emitted in most tanning beds. UVA rays, referred to as aging rays, may cause damage to DNA, linking them directly with the risk of cancer. A sun burn can take up to 48 hours to develop so you may not even know your skin is burned until it is too late.
"Tanning indoors will give me the daily dose of vitamin D" FALSE. Direct sun exposure will increase your Vitamin D levels, however, there are other options to increase your Vitamin D levels in a safe way. Try taking a vitamin D supplement daily; available in pills or drops. A supplement will increase your levels without increasing your risk for cancer.
"But I need to get a base tan before my vacation" FALSE. Having a base tan before your vacation only shows the damage already done to your skin and does not protect you from a sun burn. A tanned skin is one that is already damaged, as your body produces the tan to protect itself from the damaging rays of the sun. If you really want a base tan, apply self tanners, now available in various applications, so the streaks and smells are no longer an issue. Try St Tropez, available in Skinfo, for a natural sun-kissed glow.
"Having a tan makes me feel good about myself" While this may be true, there are other safe ways to get a "tanned look" without putting yourself at a high-level risk for cancer. Use self tanners or bronzers, such as Colorescience Kissed by the Sun Bronzer Brush for a tanned look and know that you are protecting your skin from very serious cancers. This should make you feel great!
Billing 102 What is Co-insurance? What is Co-insurance? Co-insurance is the amount a patient owes after insurance has been filed, relating to a cost-sharing requirement under a health insurance policy which provides that the insured will assume a portion or percentage of the costs of covered services. For example, some insurance companies only cover 80% of allowed charges regardless if their deductible is met; and the patient is responsible for the remaining 20% balance and will be billed after insurance has paid their portion.
What is a Co-pay? A Co-payment is a patient's payment of a portion of the cost at the time the service is rendered. This could be on office visits only or some insurance polices have an encounter fee meaning if they come in for a procedure and we bill insurance, they might apply an encounter fee/co-pay to the visit and the patient will then be billed.
Photodynamic Therapy for the Treatment and Prevention of Actinic Keratoses and Acne Many of you may be familiar with Photodynamic Therapy - or PDT - as Advanced Dermatology has long been at the forefront of this treatment for a number of dermatological conditions, particularly actinic keratoses (commonly referred to as AKs or pre-cancerous lesions) and acne. But did you know that PDT can also be a preventative measure to decrease the occurrence of these conditions - not to mention treat already existing photodamage!?
Photodynamic Therapy utilizes a solution that is applied to the affected area of the face or body and is absorbed more readily by lesions such as acne and AKs. This solution causes a reaction in the skin that is activated by a laser or light source (as properly chosen based on the particular skin condition to target).
Given that AKs can multiply and in some cases become skin cancer, it is best to treat early to target these existing conditions and decrease their occurrence. Research has found that PDT can treat existing lesions and can even prevent them. For example, in patients with a history of or propensity to numerous skin cancers and actinic keratoses, intermittent treatments with PDT can prevent their occurrence, and thus avoid many biopsies and surgeries. At the same time, it has been shown that PDT will treat and in some cases prevent photodamage such as pigmentation and wrinkling.
In recent years, PDT has also been increasingly used as an effective treatment for acne vulgaris. Acne can be persistent and not always responsive to typical treatments (oral and topical therapy). In patients that are extremely prone to acne break-outs, regular intermittent PDT treatments can prevent flares of this often stressful condition.
Given these findings, one can see why Photodynamic Therapy can be such an ideal treatment for these skin conditions that affect so many of us. PDT can treat an entire area of skin all at once, which results in the treatment of existing conditions and the prevention of future ones, plus adds the potential benefit of reducing photodamage at the same time. Who could imagine a treatment that is specific, reliable and at the same time cutting edge and preventative? No, it's not too good to be true; it's just what you would expect from Advanced Dermatology.
