Dear patients, friends and colleagues,
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. Now, it's that time of year to break out our down comforters, space heaters & humidifiers and ask ourselves: why do we live in this climate? Because it is here where we find our family and friends, those who share our Midwestern values, more plentiful jobs -- and of course because we can experience the beauty of mother nature through all four seasons (if only Winter weren't SO LONG!). So, while you are cozy by the fire and under the blankets, let me take this time to update you on the latest with Advanced Dermatology. We are pleased to announce the installation of a new "eprescribe system". We updated our medical records to enable us to send electronic prescriptions directly to your pharmacy. We hope this makes the process much faster and easier for our patients. Read more about this service in our Medical Dermatology News section of this newsletter for more information. We are offering a new cosmetic service called Lipotherme. This procedure is designed to treat areas with pockets of excess fat such as the neck, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, flanks, arms, knees and male breasts. We are also presenting a video demonstration of this procedure at the Orlando Dermatology Aesthetic Conference in January and will become a training site for the procedure. Read more about this procedure in the Aesthetic News section. We are continuing our work on a project for acne scars with the Matrix RF and Matrix IR. Patients have seen significant improvements with little pain or downtime, particularly those with darker skin types. We have consulted with Syneron, the company who created Matrix, and provided feedback to improve this cutting edge device. We are excited about the upgraded model, which has recently been made available to our research institute, SKINQRI. The second generation (called eMatrix) shows promising signs of delivering even better results in treating wrinkles, scars, tightening and smoothing of the skin. This procedure, known as sublative rejuvenation, has been found to be quite safe as we have not experienced any significant side effects in any of our patients.Additionally, I have been impressed with the improvements in our clients' skin after using a skin care regimen designed for them from Skinfo. As physicians, we are trained to recommend mainly prescription products which have been confirmed to be effective through large scale randomized studies. This is still the scientific benchmark to which we all aspire; but in real life, we have to make many decisions for which there aren't studies available to guide our choices. So how do we make these choices? Please read my commentary in the Skinfo News section. I usually finish with something about our sports teams, but there isn't anything exciting to report unless you are a hawks fan (go hawks!)...we're in "wait until next year" mode! Let's hope to have a reasonably warm winter! Stay warm!
Best Regards, Amy Forman Taub, MDAnd the Staff of Advanced Dermatology, Skinfo and SKINQRI. |

Top Ten Facial Cosmetic Resolutions for the New Year 1. Protected Skin Protecting your skin from the sun's damaging UV rays not only prevents skin cancer but also prevents signs of aging such as brown spots and wrinkles. You can protect your skin by wearing an SPF30 or higher with zinc oxide daily. Also, sun protective clothing can successfully shield your skin from UVA and UVB rays. These products are available at Skinfo.
2. Healthy Skin Applying topical antioxidants daily on the skin prevents sun damage and signs of aging by neutralizing UV-induced free radicals (which harm the skin). In addition, some antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Green Tea Polyphenols repair damaged skin cells, thus leading to healthier skin.
3. Promoting Longevity In order to prevent damage and extend the vitality of your skin it is most important to consistently use at-home skin care products as recommended by your skincare professional. Include the use of a ClarisonicPRO brush during cleansing, for optimal removal of dirt and dead skin cells, and for better penetration of your topical products.
4. Analyze Your Skin Knowing your starting point will help give you a guide of where to go next. During your cosmetic consult at Advanced Dermatology our knowledgeable staff will develop a comprehensive treatment plan to address all of your concerns regarding your skin. A VISIA Complexion Analysis will also be done in Skinfo to determine the starting point of your skin and quarterly throughout the year to assess your skin's changes.
5. Plump and Relax A youthful face is plump and has few embedded lines. Injectable wrinkle fillers such as Restylane™ and Juvederm™ can be used to restore facial volume and improve smile lines and wrinkles around the mouth. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport™ are wrinkle relaxers used to smooth away facial wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes.
6. Refresh Skin Tone Peels and facials are a quick way to freshen up your skin for a nice, glowing appearance! Whether it is to achieve a brighter skin tone, even pigmentation, or reduce acne breakouts, we do a variety of peels and facials to achieve your desired result. All treatments can be done over your lunch hour and have minimal downtime, so schedule a consult today to find out which treatment would be best for you! They also make great gifts!
7. Lighten and Correct If you have more significant sun damage and abnormal texture a more advanced laser treatment may be a good option for you. Photorejuvenation targets red and brown pigmentation from sun damage or rosacea and can give you a more even skin tone with no downtime in just five treatments! If you have more wrinkles or scarring on the skin perhaps a treatment like Fraxel or Matrix would be a better option for you to go deep into the skin to achieve the best result possible in 3-5 treatments with about 2 days of downtime. If you have a combination of wrinkles/abnormal texture with brown spots, want a faster result and don't mind 2-3 days of downtime then Pearl Erbium Laser may be the best treatment for you. A cosmetic consultation is the best avenue to decide which treatment is best so you can have a fresh, younger appearance in the New Year.
8. Smooth If you have more localized scarring from acne or have wrinkles that drive you crazy every time you look in the mirror Matrix RF & IR may be the best option for you. This treatment can be done in small areas or on the whole face to smooth and tighten the skin through a new Sublative RF technology. Just 3-5 treatments to achieve the smoother skin you have always longed for with minimal downtime.
9. Tighten and Strengthen Non-surgical face lifts are a great alternative to going under the knife. With tissue tightening technology we use heat to stimulate collagen growth to lift and firm the skin. We use the Thermage CPT, Titan and Refirme systems to achieve these results. After tightening the skin, the Pan G Lift treatment program will build up the muscles in the face and neck to tone and lift the facial structure. This combination achieves the ideal 3D effect for the best overall face lift possible with no downtime at all!
10. Maintenance Care Maintenance treatments and skin care are necessary to maintain the results achieved from any laser, tissue tightening or peel that is done in the office. Unfortunately we age on a daily basis and cannot stop the aging process. Maintaining good skin care, avoiding the sun and regular maintenance treatments will help to keep your skin looking young and healthy for as long as possible. Frequency of maintenance treatments will depend on which treatments have been performed and how much new skin damage accumulates over time.
Use these cosmetic resolutions to refresh, stimulate and maintain your skin routine this year. Enjoy and celebrate your youthful skin!
On a Mission for that Beach-Ready Body... Will you be bikini ready as you emerge from countless layers of coats and sweaters? Are you still in the pursuit of a fit toned figure? If you cringe at the words "bathing suit" due to unwanted hair, cellulite, and leg veins, the Winter months are a perfect time to do something about these pesky issues. Fortunately, there are now procedures to help us target those stubborn areas to achieve your objective- and do it without plastic surgery.
Since the majority of us are affected by the enemy also known as cellulite, then the majority of us also know how difficult it can be to defeat. VelaShape combines light energy, radiofrequency, and mechanical manipulation to help smooth problem regions and decrease the appearance of cellulite. Body by Thermage uses radiofrequency and heat to contour and firm trouble areas, decrease cellulite, improve skin texture - and sometimes provide circumferential reduction of the area. Treatments will yield more improvement over the months following your procedures, so start early this Winter to have noticeable results for Spring Break and even better results for the Summer!
Exciting advances in fat removing procedures have brought Lipotherme, a laser lipolysis system, to Advanced Dermatology. It is a form of liposuction that uses laser to melt fat prior to removing it. This procedure has several advantages over traditional liposuction, including tighter skin over the treated area and less bruising along with continued results months after the procedure. We can treat the neck/jawline, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, flanks, arms, knees, and male breasts. This is NOT an alternative to weight loss or exercise and diet, but is a good way to get rid of pockets of fat as we all know how even the healthiest and best intentioned of us have areas of excess fat that we just can't seem to reduce.
Unwanted hair on the body and face can be reduced with the help of lasers or light devices that allow us to treat many different hair and skin types, including dark skin. The number of treatment sessions will vary depending on the body area, skin type, and hair type. Schedule your consult now to begin your treatment program this Winter.
Start showing off your legs! We offer safe, non-surgical options to reduce the appearance of leg veins. Sclerotherapy and laser vein therapy are FDA approved vein treatments. Sclerotherapy uses very fine injections of a solution into the veins that causes the affected veins to close, collapse and slowly fade away over a few weeks. Laser vein therapy produces a concentrated beam of light to target the vein. As the vein is gently heated, the vein walls collapse and the vein is gradually reabsorbed by the body. These methods can be done alone or in combination to achieve optimal improvement, and multiple treatments are needed.
Healthy tans are available at our skincare boutique, Skinfo. Check out an array of St. Tropez self tanning products to compliment any skin type. If you are trying to get a "base tan" before you head to the beach, self tanners are the way to go! Please remember that tanning beds are very harmful to your health even if used once or twice before a vacation so please avoid them at any cost. Of course, once on vacation, remember to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Stock up at Skinfo on your supply of sun blocks with zinc oxide and sun protective clothing and hats. Make sure to reapply your sunscreen every two hours while outdoors, more frequently if you are swimming.
Follow these tips and start your treatments early this season. Each method is unique in how it attacks those problems - in mechanism, number of treatments and time to obtain full results. So, plan ahead to be beach ready in time for Spring Break... Mission Accomplished.

Insurance 101 With the increasing interest in healthcare, it is important to help our patients understand their health insurance policies as they relate to our services. This quarter we would like to focus on insurance contracts. Advanced Dermatology is "contracted" with many different insurance companies (see list on our website). These contracts include PPO's, EPO's, HMO's and private healthcare systems. Being "contracted" with an insurance company means that we have agreed to provide medical services and to accept an insurance company's usual and customary payment or "allowed amount" for the services rendered. Any amount that has been billed by us over the "allowed amount" will be adjusted off the bill for services as noted on your insurance statement (sometimes called an EOB or Explanation of Benefits). However, most policies include annual deductible amounts that must be met before the insurance company will pay a claim. After the primary insurance company has responded to the claim, the patient may be responsible for payment if their deductible has not been met. This amount due will also be noted on your EOB. In addition, if a patient has a co-pay, then the co-pay is due at time of service and will be subtracted from the amount due on the EOB. Any questions, please contact our billing department at 847-459-6400 x108.
ePrescribe We are pleased to announce that we have installed a new "eprescribe system" that allows us to send an electronic prescription directly to your pharmacy. The benefits to this are:
1. You don't have to worry about losing your prescription. 2. You don't have to drop it off....you can just pick it up (although there may be a 30-90 minute delay before it is filled). 3. The software checks for interactions between your medications. PLEASE NOTE: In order to make this part work, all of your medications and allergies must be updated in our system each time we see you. 4. We will most likely be able to see whether the medication we suggest is covered by your insurance and if it is affordable. We can then try to tailor your medications to your budget or advise you of the differences between the medication options. If you want to take the most advantage of that feature, please know what your prescription co-pays are and have in mind a budget you have for your medications.
We want your care to be successful and affordable, yet we also want you to have access to the very best medications. At least with this tool we can discuss the relative merits of the treatments. We are excited about this new program that will assist us in providing even better care to our patients.
Rosacea Rosacea is an inflammatory condition of the face resulting in facial redness, dilated capillaries, and in some cases acne lesions. New studies confirm that chronic sun exposure plays a big part in causing rosacea. We have been using a new product at our office called Pyratine over the past year which we have found helps significantly with redness, flushing and sensitivity of the skin that isn't widely known about. In addition to the commonly employed regimens of antibacterial agents which are effective for the acne component, we have innovative regimens that help alleviate the suffering caused by redness alone, which is what the majority of our patients experience. In addition, we are experts at laser treatments for rosacea, having published medical articles on the best ways to treat this when nothing else works or when you want to be significantly less red if you have hit a plateau with your treatment. Come in so we can get your rosacea tuned up to the best degree available.
Eczema and Dry Skin Eczema is an itchy skin condition that affects people of all ages, including children. It can be caused by genetic tendencies or allergic or irritant reactions to things that come into contact with your skin. Recent studies have documented that eczema affects quality of life significantly both for those who have it and for their families. For many people, dry skin can cause eczema or can make it worse. We will help determine the causes of your eczema, start you on a regimen with the most up-to-date treatments and innovative treatments for itching, rash, and dry skin, and discuss with you options to prevent your eczema. We want you and your children to be itch free and get a good night's sleep!

Effective Skincare Regimens & the Benefit of a Daily Skincare Regimen How do we evaluate the results of a skincare regimen? Through research? Through live clinical results? Many of the companies that make skin care products for special distribution through dermatologists and plastic surgeons perform clinical studies but they are relatively small in scope and focus on one product at a time. In clinical practice, however, most patients are recommended a combination of products to achieve their skincare goals, and usually varying products from patient to patient since each person has their own unique starting point. Therefore in standard practice this makes it almost impossible to complete a study on the effects of a few different products over time. It is hard enough to study one product at a time! I know this because we do research at SKINQRI, and it is VERY difficult to keep every single variable the same in order to ensure a true measure of improvement.
Since research then does not become our best method to evaluate a customized skincare regimen, live clinical results become critical in our assessment. In our practice, each patient is evaluated by a skincare specialist and most clients are recommended various products in their own customized regimen, so each person has a unique program. Each client should start with a baseline set of photos using the VISIA Complexion Analysis to keep track with a visual assessment of their skin. We then request that they maintain their skincare for generally 3 months and reevaluate their skin with a new set of photos. We then would modify or continue the regimen based on the clinical results. With this process, we can determine which products work most effectively for each different skin type and moreover, ensure that each client is using the best products for their skin goals.
I have to say that following a good skincare regimen is key to improving the quality of your skin. I have many patients who have used their product regimen on a regular basis for years and there is no question that their skin is smoother, brighter, and has a much better quality. Both our clients and we see the difference!
Taking good care of your skin of course includes daily sunscreen, but any good protective and preventive skincare regimen should include what we call the "Core 4": sunscreen, antioxidant, collagen stimulator and exfoliant. I am such a believer in this beneficial skin care that I want to share it with everyone via our website skinfo.com and our boutique. If you have resisted daily skin care, try to change your habits. Yes, it is more time that you have to put into your own personal care, just like flossing, exercising, following good eating habits, etc., but the benefits you can reap are huge and just get better with time! Visit our boutique or website for client testimonials on their skincare results!
