Summer is finally here... yea! This is the best time to be here in the Chicagoland area. We have been busy as ever! We are very excited to announce the addition of two new physicians to our practice. Dr. Victoria Wang did her undergraduate study at Northwestern University. She completed her medical education at the University of California and her dermatology residency at Northwestern University Medical School where I had the pleasure of instructing her in cosmetic dermatologic techniques. She is seeing patients starting full time in August. We have initiated a new cosmetic and research fellowship and Dr. Cara Garretson will be joining us in August as our first fellow. Dr. Garretson hails from Kentucky and did her undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed her dermatologic residency at the University of Kansas Medical School. She spent an entire month with us this past year as a preceptor under the auspices of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and it was a wonderful experience for Advanced Dermatology. Some of you may have met her last August. Dr. Garretson will be doing research and training under me as well as seeing patients. I am excited to begin this new educational endeavor and to mentor talented young dermatologists. Michele Miller, RN, CRC, joined our SKINQRI staff in April. Over the past eight years Michele has done dermatology research for Dr. William Hanke in Indianapolis, who is the past president of the American Academy of Dermatology and an internationally renowned dermatologist. Michele recently relocated to the Chicago area and we are very fortunate to have her with us. A small bit of business: don't forget that we have an automated confirmation system for medical appointments (these are not used for cosmetic or research appointments). New Wrinkle Reducer on the Market - Dysport Update The first FDA approved competitor to BOTOX® Cosmetic, formerly referred to as the name Reloxin, was FDA approved in May as Dysport. Dysport is approved for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines in adults younger than 65 years of age. Dysport will be used much like other "Botox"-like products for reducing wrinkles caused by dynamic muscle movements. Dysport has been marketed outside the US for aesthetic use since 2001. Marketed by Medicis in the US (the company that has Perlane and Restylane as products), it is said to have a slightly different "look" than BOTOX® Cosmetic, may have earlier onset and according to their drug package insert it last 4 months. Unfortunately we don't have more details yet but we hope to announce them soon.
Cosmetic Acne Therapy: Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Isolaz Deep Pore LAZR Therapy Don't forget we have non-medical solutions for treating acne that are very high tech and have been working well. For mild to moderate acne we offer Isolaz which uses laser/light and suction to kill the bacteria and cleanse the pores to achieve clearance. For more severe or cystic acne we often turn to photodynamic therapy, a treatment where we apply a prescription liquid on the affected area and then use a light or laser to activate the medication. It gets deep into the oil glands to reduce oil secretion as well as shrink the oil glands. Both systems improve the look and the texture of the skin as well as reducing the marks caused by the acne.

Jessner Peel Would you like to reduce the amount of damage created in your skin due to Sun exposure, acne and the aging process but are not ready to undergo laser treatments? Jessner Peels might just be the solution for you! Jessner Peels are chemical peels which are most often applied to the face, neck, chest, back, arms and hands to reduce the appearance of skin discolorations
and improve skin texture. The peel solution is made up of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol. This medium depth peel which penetrates beyond the top layer of the skin causes the skin to regenerate and heal. Depending on the degree of damage present multiple layer of the solution may be applied to the skin to produce the desired outcome. After the application of the peel patients may experience "frosting" or whitening of the skin which can persist for a few hours but is a normal occurrence. Some redness, peeling, and flaking is also expected for about seven days after the treatment. Unprotected sun exposure is highly discouraged after this procedure to ensure proper healing and reduce potential side effects. Make sure you apply a sunscreen with zinc oxide and SPF 30 or higher daily. To achieve smoother, brighter and healthier skin with less noticeable pores, fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes, two to three treatments are usually recommended with each peel scheduled two to three weeks apart.
Lip Lines Very few people are lucky to be born with naturally full, perfectly shaped lips. However, as we age, even full lips become thinner and longer over time due to gravity, sun damage, and smoking. Wrinkles and lines eventually develop around the mouth, the border of the lips gradually becomes less defined allowing lipstick to bleed, and the corners of the lips tend to turn down making us look perpetually sad. For those of us who desire to regain natural volume and shape, reduce unsightly fine lines and wrinkles on the upper and lower lip, or are looking to augment the size of the lips there are a number of effective solutions currently available. Injectable Fillers such as Restylane® or Juvederm™ have long been established as a beauty basic when it comes to enhancing the appearance of the lips. These gel-like substances can be injected into the body of the lips to create fullness, into the border of the lips to create more definition, into the vertical lines and wrinkles to reduce their appearance, and into the corners of the lips to lift them. The results are visible instantly and usually last on average about four to six months. BOTOX® Cosmetic may also be injected into the area surrounding the lips to reduce the appearance of lip lines due to the relaxation of the muscles which are causing those lines and creases to form. A slight upturn of the lips can also be achieved making the lips appear fuller. The results are usually apparent within a few days to two weeks after injections and last on average three to four months. Recently, radiofrequency and infrared devices have also become popular choices when it comes to improving the lip area either on their own or in combination with the above mentioned treatments. Thermage™, Matrix IR™, or Matrix RF™ can be implemented to stimulate collagen growth in the perioral area causing tightening of the skin, and softening of the lines. Due to these effects the lips also appear to be more defined and slightly fuller. These treatments have virtually no recovery time. The improvement is noticed gradually overtime, with the optimal outcome usually obtained six months after the completion of the treatment series and maintenance is recommended every twelve to 18 months to maintain results. Hair Loss Hair loss is one of the more difficult conditions to treat. Men and women often feel equally self-conscious about hair loss. There are different types of hair loss the most common of which are telogen effluvium ("stress-induced"), alopecia areata (autoimmune) and androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness). Telogen effluvium means that up to half of the hairs go into the "resting cycle"; this results in rapid shedding of hair over a short time. This can occur as the result of severe stressors (hospitalization, divorce, death in the family), medical conditions (low thyroid, anemia, iron deficiency) and post pregnancy. If there is an underlying medical condition that needs to be corrected and then the hair will grow back. If it is stress induced or due to pregnancy it usually passes after a 6-9 month period.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease. In this case the immune system cells mistake hair follicle cells for bacteria or a virus and they "attack" the hair follicle. Although the hair hasn't died, it is not functioning. Usually there are round circles of complete hair loss or bald spots on the scalp, but it can be more widespread or occur on the eyelashes, eyebrows or even other body hair. Prescription and injectable medications can often reverse the dormancy of the hair.
Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic hormonal condition in which the hair follicles respond abnormally to male hormones. In men they get a receding hairline, bald spot on the top of their scalp or more widespread baldness. Women develop a thinning scalp on top of their head that doesn't usually involve the very frontal hairline. This can be transmitted genetically from either the mother or the father. The treatments that are utilized for this are minoxidil solution and/or Propecia oral for men, or minoxidil and/or spironolactone oral for women. It is best to start treatment early to achieve the best results.
Safe Tanning It's summertime and we all want that nice sun-touched glow to our skin! But the harmful rays of the sun will only cause long-term damage, so what is the best option to achieve that sun-touched look? Self-Tanning! Self-tanning has come a long way over the years. Spray applications and creams can provide a gorgeous even tan with gradual to immediate results. They aren't sticky, they don't smell, and they don't damage your skin. You can purchase self-tanners to use at home such as St Tropez Everyday Tan and Auto-Bronzant, both available at Skinfo®. You can also head to a spray tanning salon to get a professional application of color. This way you can head to the beach or wear that cute sundress and have that glowing sun-kissed look. Just remember, you should still apply your sunscreen with zinc oxide and SPF 30 or higher daily (and reapply every 2 hours when in the sun). As a reminder, we do NOT recommend tanning beds as a solution. Tanning beds will only provide harmful exposure to your skin, with a straight dose of UVA rays, which are most commonly linked to aging changes in the skin: wrinkles, brown spots, and much worse skin cancer. Please remember to these safe tanning rules when you want that sun-touched look so you can reap the rewards over time!
Antioxidants and Their Anti-Cancer Benefits If you have visited our office I think you have probably heard us tell you the importance of wearing sunscreen daily, but did you know there are other products you can apply to the skin that can give even more photo-protection than just your
sunscreen alone? There are a variety of antioxidants available that help to achieve better protection from the sun and there is always great debate as to which is the "best antioxidant". One of the better ingredients is Ferulic Acid which has been known to give EIGHT TIMES the photo-protection than just sunscreen alone and has been studied for quite some time because of its anti-carcinogenic properties, anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to fight off free radicals. Ferulic Acid is often combined into Vitamin C topical preparations and should be a staple in every skin care regimen to help prevent skin cancer and to improve the mottled pigmentation and rough texture the sun causes over time. A few products that we prefer with this combination include SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic, SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF, and Skinfo® C Synergy Serum and Cream. Cold Sores Cold sores are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches the infected fluid inside the blisters. There are many medications we can prescribe to treat cold sores including anti-viral creams and pills. These medications can be used to treat current outbreaks or used preventatively. Some ways to prevent cold sores includes avoiding things that trigger outbreaks such as stress, colds or the flu. Also, avoid sharing towels, razors, silverware or toothbrushes with a person that has a cold sore. Too much sunlight can also cause cold sores to flare making it important to use a lip balm with a SPF such as Fallene SolarLipTect SPF45 and a sunscreen on your face daily.
