This winter has been so long. If you are like me you are simply dying to get outside into some sunshine! Just remember that even early in the year and even when it is still cool you can get sun damage and a sunburn so don't get caught without. Stock up on sunscreen now, (hopefully you did before spring break if you went away for a sunny trip!) While on this subject, May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and 5% of proceeds of sunscreen sales in Skinfo® will be donated to the Skin Cancer Foundation during the month of May.
A recent study showed an alarming increase in melanomas in teenaged girls. We have had a few girls 18 and under with this and all had a history of tanning both outdoors and indoors. Until this happens to you or someone you know it seems like it is minor, but all of a sudden you realize you could be at risk. Please don't let your girls tan in a tanning salon. The state of Illinois requires a parent's approval...you wouldn't sign a permit for your child to take drugs, drink or smoke and this is really no different. Erin DeVita, CST, CMLSO, CCRC is sadly bidding us a goodbye. Erin has been my right hand for the past 9 years. She is an incredibly talented person and has been an important force in every aspect of our business in getting our businesses to where we are now. Erin has been my partner in laser and research development for the past 5 years. We, as well as any of you that have been fortunate to work with her, will miss her sorely. Don't Let Your Skin Show Your Age: The Eyes, Neck and Hands Our clients are focused on preventative and corrective aging techniques for all areas of their face and body, but many often forget about these smaller areas that truly reveal an inner secret - your true age. Unfortunately these areas are naturally thin skinned, lack as many oil glands and are not commonly protected from the sun. So they tend to show the signs of aging quicker than other areas of the face and body. Here are some helpful tips on how to correct the damage in these areas, as well as prevent more from developing as quickly.
Eye Rejuvenation We are often asked, "How can I make my eyes look younger and less tired?" Aging, sun exposure, pollution, genetics and allergies can all contribute to excess skin on the upper eyelid (eyelid hooding), puffiness, and crepey texture, making it difficult to apply eye shadow or eyeliner, and wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes. To achieve younger looking eyes we often recommend Eyes by Thermage, injectable fillers and/or Matrix RF™ Treatments. Eyes by Thermage is a safe, FDA approved procedure which safely heats the deep layers of skin stimulating your body's natural skin renewal process which helps tighten existing collagen and form new collagen over time. The procedure takes about 1 hour; clients can quickly resume daily activities as the skin needs little or no recovery time. The reduction in laxity, crepiness, fine lines and wrinkles is observed gradually over the six months following treatment. Most patients benefit from one treatment but two or three treatments may be needed to achieve the desired outcome, in addition to maintenance treatments as needed to prevent further aging of the area. Matrix RF™ is also often recommended either as a stand alone treatment or for optimal results in combination with Eyes by Thermage to achieve a more profound improvement. Matrix RF™ improves the overall texture of skin while tightening and firming. Each pulse of energy applied to the skin delivers radiofrequency into the skin layers via a grid of matrix spots. The radiofrequency induces a controlled skin injury forcing the skin to remodel and grow new healthy collagen, while the surrounding untreated tissue helps to accelerate the healing process which allows for minimum social downtime post procedure. On average patients undergo 3-5 treatments at monthly intervals. Although incremental improvement may be noticed with consecutive treatments, full benefits are appreciated at six months after completing the series of treatments. Finally, putting injectable hyaluronic acid (Juvederm, Restylane) under the eye reduce the loss of volume and the under eye dark circles present there. Finish with Colorescience's Eye Candy Trio, an eye brightening system which helps to lighten and plump the under eye.
Neck Rejuvenation A lot of times we do all the right things for our face and then let our neck go...we don't necessarily use all our skin care or protect with our sunscreen on our neck as we do on our faces. Yet our neck and our hands are as exposed as our face- to the everyday UV rays when in our cars, while running our errands and while on our vacations. These bits of exposure add up and result in brown freckles, wrinkling and lax skin. Now we do have some great neck rejuvenation strategies. Combining Titan and Matrix RF™ treatment is an excellent foil for the aging changes on the neck. We recommend on average 2-6 Titan and 3-5 Matrix RF™ treatments) and see a smoothing and tightening of the skin over a 6 month period. If there are also many sun freckles or dilated blood vessels we also recommend a few treatments of Photorejuvenation. These treatments have practically no downtime. Make sure your neck matches your face!
Hand Rejuvenation Do you look down and think you are looking at your mother's or grandmother's hands? If so there are some procedures to help rejuvenate your hands and make them look younger and smoother in just a few months! If you have discoloration and mild abnormal texture, then photorejuvenation may be the best treatment for you. This no down-time procedure takes less than 10 minutes in the office and requires a series of five treatments 3-4 weeks apart. If you have more profound wrinkling or texture issues, we may recommend Matrix RF™ or Fraxel to rejuvenate your hands. With minimal downtime you can achieve younger looking hands in as few as three treatments. Warts Warts are benign skin growths caused by a viral infection in the top layer of the skin. Warts are passed from person to person, sometimes indirectly and can occur almost anywhere on the body. We offer a wide variety of successful treatments for warts and we are able to customize treatments for each patient. The treatments include a prescription cream applied to the warts daily, an oral pill taken daily, freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen, or an injection into each wart with either an anti-cancer drug called bleomycin or an immunotherapy drug called candida. While these treatments are successful, each treatment method often requires numerous sessions over weeks to months before the warts completely disappear. With each treatment the warts will become shallower and smaller in diameter as the virus causing the warts is destroyed. However, it is not uncommon for warts to take three to five treatment sessions before they resolve. We call them vexing viral vermin- they can be SO frustrating both for you and for us. Rest assured that we use EVERY method that exists to get rid of them. Patience and Persistence pays off.....Unfortunately, all of the treatment sessions cannot be combined into one fee therefore there is a separate fee for each of the treatment sessions.
Nails Nails serve as a barometer of our health. Changes or abnormalities in the finger or toe nails may indicate the presence or onset of infection, systemic disease, or even cancer. First, infections are common in the nails. Fungus or yeast may infect the nails causing changes in color, texture or shape of the nails. Also, bacteria may infect the skin surrounding the nails causing pain, swelling and redness of the skin. In addition, systemic disease such as psoriasis can change the appearance of nails. Thickening or pitting of the nails or a lifting of the nail from the skin may be seen with this. Lastly, a serious form of cancer called melanoma can develop under the nail. Fortunately, it is relatively uncommon for this to occur. The most common early warning sign is the appearance of a brown to black-colored streak underneath the nail. If a melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is nearly 100 percent curable. Nails should be evaluated regularly as they are an important clue to our health. Also, many nail changes can be completely corrected if appropriately treated.
Longer, Thicker Eye Lashes LATISSE™ is a new addition to our cosmetic palette, a prescription FDA approved treatment for "hypotrichosis", meaning short, thin or lightly colored eyelashes. LATISSE™ has been proven to grow eyelashes about 1.5 mm after 16 weeks and they become darker and fuller as well. Disposable brushes and a dropper bottle are included in the kit which is being dispensed in our office for less than it is available in pharmacies. One drop is placed on the included brush and lightly brushed over the upper lash line each night. This medication increases the lashes' time in the robust part of the growth cycle. The results have been great and you can stop getting fitted for lash extensions! Since it is a prescription, we are requiring consultation visits before a prescription is dispensed but there is no charge for these visits. You should not use this if you have glaucoma or significant eye conditions. Complications include irritation of the skin around the eye, pigmentation of the upper eyelid and color changes of the iris of the eye. All of these are uncommon to rare and will be discussed in your consultation visit.
Skin Cancer Melanoma is the most serious of all skin cancers. If you have a flat mole that has irregular pigmentation or shape and/or is not symmetric or is changing, make sure you see a dermatologist to get it evaluated. Non-melanoma skin cancer often starts with scaly flesh colored or red patches or "pearly" or scabby bumps that do not heal or continue to grow, or occasionally even pimple-like growths that never resolve. Melanoma is caused by sun as well as heredity, whereas non-melanoma skin cancer is caused principally by excessive UV radiation. It is important to detect early as most skin cancer, even melanoma, is curable with surgery.
"What are actinic keratoses and how do I know if I have any on my skin?" Actinic keratoses are pre-cancerous scaly growths that can be treated with cryotherapy (freezing), chemotherapy creams (Carac, Efudex, or Aldara) or photodynamic therapy (PDT). We specialize in PDT at Advanced Dermatology but use all methods. PDT is highly advantageous method in that it removes the precancerous spots with good cosmetic results and there are usually only a couple of days of redness and peeling. PDT also appears to prevent skin cancer and treats the entire area instead of just one or two specific spots.
Actinic Keratoses are one of the most common conditions treated in Dermatology and they account for 5.2 million visits annually in the United States. $1.2 billion are spent on treating AK's per year in the US per the Society of Investigative Dermatology 2004 report, "The Burden of Skin Disease". Acne Study Update EpiDuo Approved We are proud that one of the studies that SKINQRI participated in during 2007 resulted in a new FDA approved topical medication for acne, EpiDuo, made by Galderma. A combination of Differin Gel and benzoyl peroxide, it is being heralded as an important new therapeutic prescription for acne, since it combines the two ingredients that are recommended as the basis for most acne regimens- a retinoid and an antibacterial.
