As I write this in the waning days of August, summer is almost over, the kids are back at school and we are sadly contemplating fall and winter coming. The Cubs are 33 games over 500 (truly unbelievable!) and the presidential convention is beginning. When you get this of course this will be old news!
On October 29, Diane Ranger, founder of Colorescience, is coming for an all day event at Skinfo. Diane is the original inventor of mineral makeup and her new line, Colorescience, is a "makeup" that changes the way I have thought about makeup. Usually you think of it as something to conceal, but she has opened my eyes to the value of makeup as something more - protectant, enhancement, and an important adjunct to a focused skin care program. Her products make you feel good and your skin healthier. We have really started integrating her creations into a balanced skin care program for both healthy and problem skin types. Many of you may not know that Erin was the only employee that came with me from my former practice and I consider her a true collaborator in the protocols we have developed over the years for our laser treatments. She has been there from the beginning and has been an instrumental and integral part of making Advanced Dermatology, Skinfo and now SKINQRI what they have become today. She has developed such an interest in clinical research and SKINQRI has grown such that she does not have time to do both! Emily, Shannon and I have taken over providing all of the cosmetic laser and injectable treatments. Over the years my staff and I have developed protocols for each treatment to maintain consistency from treatment to treatment and provider to provider. We meet monthly to discuss these protocols and revise as needed as we are always striving for the best and safest results.
We recently completed the filler study and want to thank everyone who participated in this study. The results of this study were sent as a late breaking abstract for ASDS.

Skin Rejuvenation with Fraxel re:store™ and Photorejuvenation Many patients develop redness, brown spots, and textural irregularities in their skin as they age. Photorejuvenation commonly called a "Fotofacial" and Fraxel re:store™ are two treatments commonly used to correct this. The treatments may be done alone but the combination of the two provides superior results. Photorejuvenation is a light based procedure that removes the signs of sun damage including freckles, blood vessels, and superficial wrinkles from the surface of the skin. Fraxel re:store™ Laser treatment is also used to reduce discoloration and wrinkles in skin, but since it penetrates more deeply into the skin than photorejuvenation, it also improves textural irregularities, skin laxity, and pore size. When the two treatments are combined, patients will see an increased improvement not only in brown spots and redness but also in skin laxity and texture achieving an overall "rejuvenated appearance".
PanG™ lift The PanG™ lift is a treatment that addresses the structural component of aging. As we age we lose bone, fat and collagen in our face, causing sagging and hollowing around the eyes, mouth, cheeks and jowling. This muscle stimulation technique is unique in that it approaches the lifting and rebuilding of volume by "exercising your face" and increasing the muscle size and strength of the small, strap-like muscles in the face. We focus on only the lifting and firming muscles of the face and leave the depressor (pulling down) muscles of the face alone! This treatment, which isn't widely available in many other places, is perfect for those who want an anti-aging option that doesn't require injections. It is an all natural way of rejuvenating your face. Treatments are performed biweekly for 10 weeks and monthly maintenance treatments are required thereafter.
Tattoo Removal Many of us got tattoos when it seemed like we would want a certain image on us forever. But then we regretted it years later. Tattoo removal isn't as difficult as it has been portrayed. With our Q-switched laser, we have successfully removed or greatly reduced the tattoos on many of our patients. We have had excellent success removing tattoos that are primarily black or blue. Other colors such as green, red or yellow are more difficult to remove and may require more treatments or not fade completely but can still be greatly reduced. Winterizing your Skin As the season changes and cold weather is ushered in our skin changes too. It is common in winter months to experience dry or itchy skin and many of us will need to alter our skin care regimen because of this. The changes in skin care may include switching to a heavier moisturizer (such as Skinfo Intensive Moisture Concentrate), adding a hyaluronic acid serum (like SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel) to your moisturizing routine and/or switching to a gentler skin cleanser (such as Kinerase Gentle Daily Cleanser). If you use a product containing retinol you may need to reduce the frequency of application. Adding an alpha hydroxy acid moisturizer can help to exfoliate rough, dry skin on the surface while increasing the water carrying capacity of the skin, leaving your skin softer and smoother. Since cold weather is soon approaching, start thinking about "winterizing" your skin now. Visit Skinfo for more information and help in altering your skin care regimen so you are ready for winter.
Brand name medications We frequently prescribe prescription medications that are brand names and not generic. We do this only when there are benefits to the brand name such as: better results, fewer side effects, more convenient dosing schedule or a better consistency of the cream or lotion. These benefits may make it more likely that you will get better results and/or be more compliant with using the medications.
However, some brand name medications may not always be covered under your insurance plan. Unfortunately at this time, it is not possible for us to know what medications are covered by each individual insurance company, or how much you will have to pay for each medication. It is truly NOT our intention for you to pay a very high price for your medication.
Here are some tips we can provide to help you get the best possible medications for your condition at the lowest available price.
1. Utilize the coupons or cards we provide you with your samples, which often contain a significant discount. Read the instructions on them.
2. Make the pharmacist actually CHECK with your card, that the medication isn't covered and ASK how much your part will be. Sometimes they assume it won't be covered but it actually is. These formularies are frequently changed.
3. The pharmacist and/or the pharmacy MAKES MORE MONEY by dispensing generic medications. When they say "your doctor prescribed X when they could have given you a much less expensive generic version Y" think about the fact that your doctor may have had a reason for the brand medication. Also the pharmacist actually has a monetary incentive to get you to switch. You may find that with your coupon the brand name medication costs less than the generic!
4. Call around if you do have to pay out of pocket for your medications. Pharmacies can vary greatly and even vary from week to week in what they charge.
5. Always check the actual price you are paying for medications BEFORE YOU LEAVE. It is against the law for a pharmacist to take back medication once it leaves the pharmacy. This also goes for your children. Do not let them pay with a credit card or automatic credit without checking with you first. Some medications, if not covered, can cost hundreds of dollars. If any medication is outside of your budget, we will do our best to get you the next best, lesser expensive substitute and/or explain what the differences are. Please call!
Remicade for Psoriasis Patients We are pleased to announce that we are now offering Remicade infusions to our patients for the treatment of psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin which is thought to occur when a substance in the body called, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue in the body. Remicade, which is a type of protein, works by attaching to and blocking the action of TNF thus reducing the inflammation.
Remicade is administered as an intravenous infusion in the office under the care of a registered nurse. An infusion takes approximately 2 hours and is given at a prescribed interval which usually amounts to 6 times/year. Improvement can be seen in as little as 2 weeks.
Patients wishing to start Remicade need a thorough evaluation prior to starting as there are potentially serious side effects that can occur including reducing the body's ability to fight infection. Patients on Remicade must be diligent in reporting any signs or symptoms of illness or infection to their doctor while on the medication.
If you have psoriasis and feel you may benefit from Remicade, please schedule a psoriasis visit with any one of our providers. In addition to determining if it's right for you, our billing specialist can help to determine your insurance coverage for these infusions.
isolaz™ DEEP PORE LAZR THERAPY for Acne We have been thrilled at the patient response that we have received from the isolaz™ DEEP PORE LAZR THERAPY. This FDA approved acne treatment has been in high demand at our office because of its effectiveness and lifestyle benefits. Isolaz™ combines vacuum suction and light to target blackheads and red pimples thus improving acne. The vacuum uses gentle suction to remove dirt, excess oil deep within the pores and blackheads. The light helps destroy acne causing bacteria on the surface of the skin. The Isolaz™ treatment is virtually painless and can be used on most body surface areas including the face, chest, and back. Benefits are often seen after the first treatment, however a series of treatments (usually 4-8) is often recommended to obtain optimal, lasting results with occasional maintenance.

Results for the Facial Volume Restoration and Age Study The purpose of this study was to see if using multiple syringes (6-8) per person of a combination of Restylane and Perlane would reduce the "apparent" age of the person. After all, most of us pursue cosmetic treatments to look better and younger. Ten subjects were recruited and treated. Photos were taken at baseline, at 2 weeks post treatment and at 1 month post treatment. These photos were sent individually to 3 well-known cosmetic dermatologists and they rated the age of each subject without knowing which photos were before or after or the subjects actual age. What we found was that on average, the fillers made these women look 5 years younger. I was pleased with this outcome because I believe you cannot really look more than 10 years younger than your actual age without beginning to look unnatural.
