Words of the Week: SPRINGBOARD |
Curiosity and passion fuel creativity. In the May/June 2012 issue of SOMERSET STUDIO, articles by Lynne Perrella and Michelle Ward show, rather than tell, how those things which capture our hearts and minds become springboards for artistic expression. Lynne's "The Narrative Tarot: Portraits inspired by ancient wisdom," mentions a vintage book by biologist and philosopher, Ernst Haeckel in which his intricate drawings of deep sea and microscopic life were collected. I won't spoil your pleasure of discovery by telling you too much, other than to say Lynne's attraction to these beautifully rendered images led her to interpret them as symbols in her tarot portraits. She suggests we keep our work fresh by drawing upon our enthusiasms, while being open to the unexpected. Michelle's topic for her regular "Make It Your Own" column is "Carve Your Own Stamps." In the final paragraph, following considerable encouragement (with color samples) on getting started in carving, she mentions that the featured images developed from her visions of visiting Tuscany, "...thinking of the horizons dotted with cypress trees and fields of sunflowers." These are not "how-to" articles, but rather explorations of process arising from the fires within, combined with the strong desire to produce work which is meaningful to the artist. Let what calls to you be your guide. It will not lead you in a wrong direction. |
