Greetings!
Whew.....not even summer yet and it looks like June is going to be hot! As a result of the heat, it's definitely time to start showing a little more skin, expel more sweat (with or without effort), and the occasional dip in the pool to cool off while soaking up some sun! With that said, this month's news is full of things to do during the warmer mornings, hotter afternoons and barely less than hot nights to keep you active and having fun.
I'd like to think of this month as a good time to buddy up with a girlfriend or two to keep each other positive, motivated and active to start a new habit, begin a new fitness regimen, change your wardrobe, find a new hairdo, plan activities for the children, eat healthier meals, show up for class or just make sure you get the "me" time you deserve. Don't be hard on yourself, but rather be good to yourself and those around you. Afterall, it's summertime and it's okay to take the "livin' is easy" approach! Tank tops, flip flops, shorts and swimsuits.......stay active, be fit, happy and have fun!:)
As always, be safe and have fun.

SHOW SHAKIRA SOME ZUMBA LOVE &
CELEBRATE THE WORLD CUP ON FRIDAY, JUNE 25th @ 6:30P! :)
Well we haven't had a largely attended Zumba Fiesta in a while and thought we would "go big" for our next party. So, we are incorporating a small event to take place during the party. We plan to deliver a fun experience and workout with some new moves and grooves to shake things up! However, here's the scoop on the small event segment.... World-famous singing sensation, Shakira, is showing her support for 1GOAL, an international campaign to promote universal education, with a very special challenge. Shakira is asking people all over the world to support 1GOAL by recording themselves dancing the WAKA WAKA(the dance for the official FIFA World Cup 2010 song, by Shakira featuring Freshlyground) and uploading it to YouTube as a response to her original video.
Come party with your Zumba instructors (Andrea, Carmen, Michelle) as we jump on the bandwagon and support this important cause by joining Shakira's video challenge and dance the Waka Waka like nobody's business! Like it says in Shakira's video, "Let's all dance for 1GOAL: Education for All. 1 dance, 1 song, 1 goal." We will do this portion following a brief warm-up and practice of the dance. Everyone can practice & participate and not obligated to be in the video. Our plan is for this to take place within the first 20 minutes and then it's "on" for the rest of the Fiesta! :) Refreshments will be provided! Register now for this event in Allen on Friday, June 25th at 6:45pm.
There are also 2 free admission spots open for volunteer video recorders - someone that wants to attend but doesn't want to be in the video. Contact me if you're "the dependable one" for the job! :) |

CUT THE FAT - Boost Memory & Exercise Performance
If your memory has been a little fuzzy lately, or your exercise performance has started to suffer, you might want to take a good look at your diet. A new study suggest that high-fat eating, even over the course of just a few days, can take a significant and immediate toll on both short-term memory and exercise performance.
Studies on both rats and humans by researchers at Cambridge University have found a similar drop in both cognitive and physical-activity performance following several days of consuming a high-fat diet. It is still unclear why a high-fat diet might impair cognitive function although some believe that it could trigger insulin resistance, which reduces the body's efficiency in using glucose - an important component of brain functioning. As for exercise performance, lead researcher Dr. Andrew Murray explained that a high-fat diet causes the body to release proteins that can reduce metabolic efficiency. In other words, exercise may make it possible to consume high-fat foods without fear of weight gain, but those high-fat foods will ultimately hinder performance. |

Quercetin Boosts Endurance Quercetin is an antioxidant found in apple skins, cranberries, blueberries, onions, tea and red wine. It might be an effective supplement for active women because it prevents illness and improves cell aerobic capacity. Supplementing with quercetin for seven days (1,000 mg per day) increased aerobic capacity by 4 percent and endurance capacity by 13 percent, compared to a placebo (fake quercetin). Other studies found that quercetin reduced inflammation, boosted the immune system, stimulated mental performance, protected the heart from coronary artery disease, and prevented protein breakdown. Quercetin builds up in the tissues, and we don't know its safety or effectiveness in high concentrations.

The American College of Sports Medicine has shown... that if you wait more than three hours after exercise to eat, your muscles only get 75% glycogen replenishment - not enough for optimal repair. Recovery shakes are an easy solution to getting 100% muscle recovery. Drink up within 30 minutes after your last set to make tomorrow's workout even stronger. |

Is Your Cookware Upping Your Cholesterol? You may be using a nonstick pan to cook your meals without the extra fat and oil, but a new study might make you think twice. Researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health found that people with the highest serum levels of polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (or PFCs, which are found in nonstick cookware and other household items) had higher total cholesterol than those with the lowest levels of PFCs. White study authors have called the findings "exploratory", in early 2009 PFCs were also linked to delayed fertility in women. To stay on the safe side, choose cast-iron cookware instead, and follow these tips:
- Never preheat your nonstick pots and pans on high. PFCs are released at high temperatures.
- Do not place nonstick pots and pans into an oven over 500 degrees.
- Turn on the exhaust fan over the stove while using nonstick cookware. |

On Being A Lady....
Cocktail parties are forgiving when it comes to time, though if you arrive after most of the hors d'oeuvres have disappeared (and half the guests), then that's a reliable sign you're tardy. Dinner parties are more time sensitive - if you're 30 minutes past the appointed hour, expect that your hostess will greet you with an artic smile! A lady never shows up with or as an uninvited guest to a party. |
