KURTIS BLOW AND KRS ONE PARTNER TO PROMOTE "NO PROFANITY DAY" ON AUGUST 9, 2009

A "No Profanity Hip Hop Anniversary Tour" will launch May through July 2008, showcasing Big Daddy Kane, Whodini, Public Enemy and more.

Kurtis Blow and other Hip Hop icons are challenging America. For one day: no crime, no violence, no hate, no murders, no sin - and no profanity. Their goals is to have one day of love, peace, unity, kindness, goodness, gentleness and fun with a series of events throughout the coarse of a day.

In the last 30 years, rap has steadily become a cultural phenomenon and its influence dominates as America's latest offering of pop culture to the world. And now - the Parents Television Council, in partnership with the Enough is Enough Campaign, released shocking new data about BET's and MTV's daytime music video programming. As recently as March 2008, children who watched BET's Rap City and 106 & Park and MTV's Sucker Free on MTV were bombarded with adult content - sexual, violent, profane or obscene - once every 38 seconds.

Kurtis Blow comments, "No Profanity Day is a national holiday that is anointed and ordained right from the Bible and God. What would it hurt to have one day of this kind of behavior? It is a challenge for anyone to live like this for 24 hours. Spiritual people are commanded to live this way everyday. Can you make it happen for 24 hours? August 9, 2009 is the day. Also, there is a No Profanity Hip Hop Anniversary Tour launching in May and June of 2008 to start the buzz for the national holiday."

He continues, "Our scriptural inspiration is Galatians 5:22-23 which says that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Supporters of No Profanity Day include Rev. Delman Coates, the NAACP, and thousands of other hip-hop fans and icons.

The anniversary tour will showcase legendary artists and enormous talents that created the rap music genre in the USA starting in May. The tour is sponsored by Visit Florida (www.visitflorida.com) and aims to present three hours of non-stop Hip Hop without profanity.

The series of U.S. and European shows will feature:

Grand Master Mele Mel
Grand Wizard Theodore
The Force MDs
Big Daddy Kane (for selected shows)
Whodini. (for selected shows)
KRS 1 (for selected shows)
The Air Force Crew

  • Belzoni Celebrates "Pine Top" Perkins Blues Trail Marker & Festival

By Brinda Fuller Willis, Ph.D. Blues Educator

The town of Belzoni can now boost that they have the 44th Mississippi Blues Trail Marker dedicated to Joe Willie "Pine Top" Perkins which also honors the late bluesman Paul "Wine" Jones located on Highway 49 West near the future site of the Pine Top Perkins Blues Center.

After the bad weather cleared, Saturday, May 3, 2008 the fans, friends and citizens of Belzoni gather along the side of the road on Highway 49 to pay homage to their native son "Pine Top" Perkins with the unveiling of the latest blues trail marker. The family of local legendary bluesman Paul "Wine" Jones was on hand to honor and commemorate the music he contributed to the blues from the Delta. The widow of Paul "Wine" Jones, Ms. Betsy Jones was accompanied by sisters, Australia Neal, Shirley Toy, and Corrine Harris. Jones' niece Sherll Fry and nephew Marvin Jones were also present to offer their support of the event.

Pastor Morris Allen offered the invocation and Belzoni city alderman, Charles Thurman made a special presentation on behalf of mayor Wardell Walton in his absence and so did a representative of the Humphreys County Broad of Supervisors. Mr. Marvin Jones addressed the crowd relating familiar family stories about Perkins and Jones. Ms. Helen Sims, president of the Mississippi Delta Blues Society, gave a heart-felt appreciation to "Pine Top" and Paul "Wine" Jones. Ms. Leigh Portwood with the Mississippi Development Authority, Heritage Trails Program told the audience about the efforts of the many people who work to make the trail markers a reality.

The 94 year-old piano man arrived dressed to the nines in his crisp white shirt, straw hat and socks that had the design of piano keys up the side. He smiled, signed autographs and took photos with everyone prior to the unveiling. When the marker was unveiled he went over and looked up smiling and said, "That's Pine Top" in a low voice. Dr. Edgar Smith played a medley of "Pine Top" songs during his remarks just prior to and during the ceremony off the "Born in the Delta" CD such as:

    *"Everyday I Have The Blues"
    *For You My Love"
    *Look On Yonder Wall"
    *Blues After Hours"

Dr. Brinda Fuller Willis brought greetings on behalf of Mrs. Marie Dixon, widow of the late Willie Dixon and the Willie Dixon Blues Heaven Foundation of Chicago Illinois. Scott Barretta, a noted blues researcher and scholar commented on his desire to gather the information about these legends of the blues and have it available when the markers are being dedicated especially while the bluesmen are alive to get their just desserts. Marvin Jones informed the audience of the contributions of Paul "Wine" Jones as a local musician, family man and member of the Belzoni community. A teary-eyed Betsy Jones thanked everyone for recognizing her husband's contributions to the music of the Delta.

Most blues lovers celebrate Perkins as the Blues Piano Master. Perkins is known as Muddy Waters' piano man and can be heard on several recordings from 1969 thru 1980. According to the printed background information from the Mississippi Delta Blues Society, Blues master Joe Willie "Pine Top" Perkins was born on July 7, 1913 on the Honey Island Plantation, seven miles southeast of Belzoni. Perkins spent much of his career accompanying blues icons such as Sonny Boy Williams, No. 2 and Muddy Waters. After he began to tour and record as a featured singer and soloist in 1980s, Perkins earned a devoted following among blues enthusiasts who hailed him as the venerated elder statesman of the blues piano. Pint Top Perkins did not have an album under his own name un the United States until he was 75 years old (in 1988), but during the next two decades he recorded more than 15 LPs and CDs as the reigning patriarch of the blues piano.

Perkins started out on guitar, but he also learned piano as a youngster, influenced by other local pianists and by the records of Clarence "Pine Top" Smith and others. Smith "Pine Top's Boogie Woogie" of 1929 was so popular that many pianists including Perkins, took up boogie woogie and sometimes even adopted the name "Pine Top," or Pinetop." In the 1940s Perkins played piano on radio broadcasts with Nighthawk and with Sonny Boy Williams, No.2 (Rice Miller) on KKFA in Helena, Arkansas. Perkins also drove a tractor on the Hopson Plantation near Clarksdale. In Clarksdale, he later mentored a young Ike Turner on piano.

In 1969, when Otis Spann another pianist with roots in Belzoni, left the Muddy Waters band, Waters called on Perkins to take his place. International touring and recording with Muddy Waters brought him widespread recognition and he made his first album in 1976 for a French label. In 1980 Perkins and other band members left Muddy and formed the Legendary Blues Band. After recording two albums with the unit, Perkins embarked upon on belated solo career.

Perkins subsequently won so many W.C. Handy Blues Awards (later known as Blues Music Awards) as Instrumentalist of the Year (piano/keyboards category) that the award was finally renamed in his honor and his name was removed for the balloting in order to allow other piano players a chance to win.

Immediately following the trail marker ceremony everyone went uptown to the courthouse lawn and participated in the 1st Annual "Pine Top" Perkins Blues Festival. Hundreds of people converged upon the lawn of the courthouse to hear the legendary "Pine Top" Perkins lay down some of his signature songs. Several local bands including Mickey Rogers, "Howlin Madd" Bill Perry, Mississippi Slim, and Billy Gibson paid their respects to the piano man during the afternoon. The incomparable Bobby Rush turned up the volume and electrified the crowd bringing the festival to an end.

    The Return Of A Legend

He is an exceptional writer, producer, recording artist and has been performing of Blues, R&B and Southern Soul Music for many years. His newly released triple Play CD " Return of A Legend" Rue Davis Featuring, "Let's Stay Together," is the hottest CD yet. Most recently (at the Jackson Music Awards) he received "The International Songwriter of the Year Award". He has written many other smash hits songs for other recording artists. Now he has signed with a new record label, Boom Town Records and Big Mouth Productions, that will continue to allow him to better write and produce music that consumers will buy.

    MICHAEL BURKS CELEBRATES NEW RELEASE

Michael "Iron Man" Burks earned his moniker by his hours-long, intensely physical performances, fearsome guitar attack, and tough, smoky vocals. He also earned it by the thousands of miles he personally logged behind the wheel of his touring van. Burks is a true modern blues hero. Nobody in today's blues world successfully bridges searing electric guitar blues with unbridled rock and roll energy like Burks. The Chicago Sun-Times recently said Burks is "poised on the brink of major stardom."

With the release of his new CD, IRON MAN, Burks is set to take his place beside the biggest names in the blues. Produced by Burks and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer and fueled by Burks' hard-driving road band, IRON MAN (featuring seven of twelve songs written or co-written by Burks) is an electrifying slice of emotional, rocked-out blues. His fiery fretwork, gruff, fervent vocals and overwhelming intensity are captured live in the studio. The album features some of the hottest guitar playing and most soulful singing Burks has ever recorded. Burks joined the Alligator family in 2001 and released the critically acclaimed MAKE IT RAIN. Billboard said, "Burks is a powerhouse blues guitar slinger,he blasts through licks like Clapton used to play just because he can. He is a great guitarist." He immediately hit the road in support of the CD, bringing his blistering blues to fans across the country and throughout Europe and Australia as well, with gigs at clubs, concert halls and major festivals everywhere.

His next album, I SMELL SMOKE, continued his momentum. Living Blues said, "Burks' fretwork is skin-tight yet emotionally expressive. His voice is dusky and sensual yet shot through with virility. Burks burns his signature onto almost everything he touches with aching passion and the probing intensity of his guitar. He has the ability and the imagination to fuse the best of the old and the new." Burks received three Blues Music Award nominations for his work on the CD, including Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year and Blues Song Of The Year for the title track.

The unstoppable, heartfelt intensity that Michael brings to the stage lies at the very core of his appeal. Dedicated fans around the country and in Europe, Australia and South America already know and appreciate the sweat and passion he pours out each night. The music on IRON MAN - forged by his unquestionable talent and fueled by the experience of years on the road - proves that electric guitar blues is alive and well in the hands of the Iron Man, Michael Burks.

    Blues review a comin'

By JAMES BROWN Glasgow Daily Times

GLASGOW - Three days after turning 18, Roy Roberts' grandfather hauled him to Greensboro, N.C. from Park City to live with an uncle. Not because Roy was a problem boy did Roy McKinney drive his grandson away from home, but because he knew he loved music more than farm work.

"It was rough growing up in this part of the country because farming wasn't my thing," Roberts said. "I wasn't cut out for farming. That mule was killing me. As I was chopping tobacco, I said, there's got to be an easier way of making a living than this."

He found a way more suited for him through music.

Roberts was born in Livingston, Tenn., but moved with his family to near Park City when he was less than 2.

"My mom taught me how to play piano when I was about 12 years old," Roberts said. "I didn't care much about it because you look kind of odd playing the piano when all the other guys are out in the yard playing ball."

But he did like music and at 14 he had saved enough money to buy himself a Sears Silvertone guitar.

"I had a friend here and he could play a little bit and taught me what he could play," he said. "Three days after my 18th birthday my grandfather took me to Greensboro

Soul Rebels want to funk up Heatwave

We're standing among throngs of revelers outside the back entrance to Le Bon Temps Roule, a club in New Orleans' Uptown neighborhood, where the Soul Rebels Brass Band performs every Thursday. It's May 1 around 11:30 p.m. during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the internationally renowned music celebration that runs nearly 24/7 for 10 days straight. The Soul Rebels are scheduled to hit the Le Bon Temps stage in a half-hour; about 200 people already pack the place, with another hundred or so mostly local 20somethings hanging outside, creating a vibrant block-party scene.

Each member of the Soul Rebels -- snare drummer Lumar Le Blanc, bassist/percussionist Derrick "Oops" Moss, trumpeter/vocalist Marcus "Red" Hubbard, trumpeter Tannon "Fish" Williams, tenor saxophonist Eron Williams (not related), sousaphonist Edward Lee, trombonist/vocalist Winston Turner and guitarist Norimitsu Hirata -- has gathered for a pre-show interview to promote their performance at Tropical Heatwave in Ybor City May 17. "We're gonna play hip- hop funk 'til you drop," says LeBlanc, a large man who arrives at the show in a shiny black Cadillac Escalade.

"It's gonna be a jazz rave," Turner adds, grinning

Top-rated WGN, 'GCI remain above radio fray

The more things change, the more they stay the same -- even in an industry as turbulent as radio.

The last dozen years have been a time of immense change for radio, ever since the 1996 Telecommunications (so-called) Reform Act took effect. That triggered a frequency land grab by major media conglomerates, leading to downsizing and copy-cat cookie-cutter formats. More recently, radio has been as shaken as any other electronic medium by the changes wrought by the Internet, for instance having to fight off the impact of the ubiquitous iPod.

Yet look at the winter Arbitron radio ratings released recently, and it's still personality-talk WGN 720-AM and urban-contemporary WGCI 107.5-FM atop the rankings, just as it has been for almost every quarterly book since I've been doing this job (13½ years, for the record) and long before that. And all-news WBBM 780- AM in third has held that position as well more often than not over the years

Broadcasters Say Multicast Diversity Is Growing

A "next generation" of HD2 programming has rolled out on stations and online, broadcasters say.

Member stations of the HD Digital Radio Alliance say they are providing airtime to local and unsigned acts, bringing back former stations or formats and offering programming relevance for various demographics.

The alliance promotes HD-R to consumers; it consists of radio owners Beasley, Bonneville, CBS, Citadel/ABC, Clear Channel, Emmis, Entercom, Greater Media and WBEB(FM) in Philadelphia.

Multicast programming has been derided by critics as mirroring what is found on the main FM dial and often automated without an investment of personality. But the alliance says you'll hear much more than that on HD2.

If you want to hear a local, unsigned band, the nearest coffeehouse isn't the only option anymore, according to the group. Stations on HD2 are playing global and unsigned acts, and some are allowing bands to become involved with the ability to upload their music online for possible airplay.

Indie formats being highlighted by the alliance include "iChannel," aired by Bonneville in Chicago, Washington, St. Louis and Salt Lake City; "Radio You Boston," Greater Media in Boston; and "Local 107- Local Artists," Emmis in Austin.

Some formats that have been flipped away on main channel FMs are finding life on HD2 including "Haney's Big House 96.1 HD2" by Beasley in Ft. Myers-Naples-Marco Island, Fla., which was featured in RW's April 23 issue, page 25; "Live Rock- WMMR Archives" by Greater Media in Philadelphia; and "80s-Based Adult Hits" from CBS Radio in Las Vegas, New York and McAllen-Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas.

HD2 formats that speak to various demographics include "Old Skool Hip Hop" (Clear Channel/Boston); "Country/Southern Rock" (Citadel/Atlanta); "Oldies" (Buckley/Hartford-New Britain-Middletown, Conn.) and "Solid Gold 106" (Beasley/Ft. Myers-Naples-Marco Island, Fla.)

All stations using HD Radio need to drive listeners to HD2 and HD3 channels and market the new programming, stated Peter Ferrara, president and CEO of the alliance. That programming also must entice listeners to buy HD Radios, he said.

    Ask The Twins

Dear Twins: I'm the oldest in my family and I've always looked out for my brothers and sisters. That being said I must tell you all about my brother whom I loved dearly. He recently started dating a woman about fifteen years older than he is. The age difference in itself is not such a bad thing since women are dating men much younger than they are these days. The problem I'm seeing in this relationship is how much alcohol had become apart of every social activity they have since he became involved with this older woman in such a short time. They've only been dating for about six months. Before he met her he was hard working and fugal about how he spent his money and he only drank about two or three time a year during the holidays. Alcohol has become a driving force in his life and the big influence is this older woman. He thinks he has to drink at every social gathering or when any of my family or anybody else just drops by. When I see him during the week he's tipsy and on weekends he's wasted. I'm sure she's an alky and I think my brother is well on his way to being one also. He now frequently calls to borrow money. I'm sure you all may think I'm being over-protective and that I should mind my own business but I feel he's going down the wrong path. What can I do to help without being labeled as a busybody?

    Open Letter To Hip-Hop

Flipping through channels, I landed on CNN. I don't know why but this picture of this young kid had caught my attention. So I turned my interest to the program and saw they were talking about Blair Holt. If you haven't heard Blair is an or should I say was a 16 year old honor student who gave up his life to save his friend. The interesting thing is that this young hero was an inspiring rapper. A rapper whose rhymes were more about making a change in his gang siege community.

It's so horrifying when looking more and more into this story to see the vicious cycle of evil that haunts us. I read that in that school system they have had 20 deaths, 20 DEATHS of students just trying to get to school and back. Yet there wasn't any noise being made? Man I don't even know where I'm going with this other than we need, NEED to stop this. We need to stop poisoning our own and killing our own! There is so much more to life than this bullshit! How do we sit back and just watch this go on and on?

    The cool Kidz in class

Nostalgic hip-hop heads yearn for the music of its golden era: the late '80s and early '90s. Back then, many say hip-hop was eclectic and pure and truly represented their neglected generation. The jazzy beats and introspective rhymes of A Tribe Called Quest, Souls of Mischief, Rakim, De La Soul and Black Moon pumped out of boom-box speakers on street corners across the country. To some fans, no one new can measure up to these artists.

But on its second album, the duo Kidz in the Hall stacks its records high enough to reach the peak hip-hop hit 15 years ago. The In Crowd is a well-sewn tapestry of funk, soul, boom-bap and jazz beats made by DJ/producer Double-O that perfectly wraps around rapper Naledge's melodic flow and clever wordplay. With record scratches, Masta Ace vocal samples, big- band horns, braggadocio punch lines and honest stories about relationships, being a struggling artist and overcoming inner demons, the album encompasses all that hip-hop fans have loved in the past, yet it is like nothing they've ever heard before.

Kidz in the Hall's sophomore effort is much more mature and accessible than its inconsistent and somewhat pretentious debut, School Was My Hustle. The title is a nod to the duo's Ivy League education at the University of Pennsylvania, where the two met. Although it was clear the group had potential, the album was littered with bitten beats, uninspiring lyrics and an overall style some may criticize as hipster rap.

El' Willie brings 'Situations' to listeners

    By Strings

Not to beat a dead horse (although it's safer than trying to ride a live bronco), but I've said it before- it's taken be some time to get used to some of the newer sounds in R&B, especially when it comes to Southern Soul. I grew up on full rhythm sections, real horns, Hammond organs and the like. So, it's taken me some time to get used to the stripped down synth- and drummachine based sound that came along a few years ago. Yeah, I understood that time marches on, and with it comes changes in economics and technology and, alas, changes in music.

Okay, I have to admit, some of the new stuff that's come along ain't bad-not bad at all. Some of it, like "Situations" by El' Willie (Ash Street Productions, MVP Records/Phat Sound Promotions) falls in that category: Not bad and, in fact, quite a bit of fun.
