The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. Held on the third full weekend of October each year, this worldwide jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby radio amateur's ham shack.
Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically requires speaking into a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized
communication can also take place, such as video communication, digital communication using typed words on the computer screen transmitted by radio, communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater), and many others. The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age, and hobbies. The stations you'll be communicating with can be other Scouts across town, across the country, or even around the world! The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2011 JOTA had nearly 750,000 Scout participants from over 6,000 amateur radio stations! A participant patch is available, as is a certificate/log sheet that can also be used to fulfill a Radio merit badge requirement.
The 55th Jamboree-on-the-Air is October 20-21, 2012.
The Burlington County Council's official site will be at the Emergency Services Building, 134 New Road in Tabernacle, NJ.
The site will be hosted by Troop 439 in partnership with the Tabernacle Office of Emergency Management, and the Pinelands Regional CERT. The event will be sponsored by the Burlington County Radio Club which will provide communications equipment, mentors, merit badge counselors and radio expertise.
The official hours are from Saturday at 0800 hours to Sunday 12:00 So Scouts and Scouters will have 24 straight hours to get on the air and make JOTA contacts.
The day will start with an opportunity for Scouts to set up antenna and radios as well as be instructed in basic communications. We will officially go on the air opening the station at 1200 hours and run constantly until Sunday at noon. This will provide an opportunity to work on the Radio merit badge and learn some of the basics as well as be in a position to talk to or communicate with Scouts around the world.
As part of the event participating Scouts will receive an official log book as well as a 2012 JOTA patch.
Scouts are invited to spend as long or as little time as they can and are not required to stay the entire time the station is open to earn the patch but they must get on the air.
Scouts and Scouters, CUB and Ventures are all welcome and can attend as a unit, a group or as individuals but they must be in uniform and register ahead of time.
Contact William Lowe, Tabernacle Emergency Management Coordinator at
for more information or to register to attend the JOTA.

Newly Designed Recruiter CSP
(In response to some questions and to clarify the guidelines please read our message below)
Please remember "A Scout is Trustworthy" as we all recruit and draw new members into the fold, please also remember that the spirit of our newly created recruiter shoulder patch is to recognize Scouts and Scouters that truly, through individual communication and persuasion, have recruited a new member into the organization. As an example a boy that shows up due to a flyer from school is not an individually recruited Scout but a neighbor that you have personally asked to join your committee or a Scout's best friend who decides to join after much persuasion does.
Recruiter shoulder strips will be awarded in the following manner; for the first individual recruit you qualify for, one patch will be awarded. After your third recruited member you will qualify for a second patch. After your fifth recruited member you qualify for a third patch and at your seventh recruited member you qualify for a fourth patch. Upon recruiting a tenth new member you qualify for a fifth patch. If you personally recruit more then 10 new members please reach out to us for special recognition. As everyone knows Scouts love patches and we hope that these patches spark excitement in your unit and get people talking to friends about Scouting; peer to peer is the most effective form of recruitment and we want to reward you for your efforts!
