Pickworth, '13, Puts NIH Research Funding to Work

Katie Pickworth

Over the summer, Katie Pickworth, '13, used funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program to study obesity.

"I spent 10 weeks working at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland in the Section on Growth and Obesity, led by Dr. Jack Yanovksi," Pickworth says. "I worked on two projects. The first was looking at eating in the absence of hunger amongst adolescents of all demographic varieties. The second project was an intervention of overweight and obese adolescent girls with a family history of Type 2 diabetes and elevated depression.

"The intervention is treatment for depression in hopes that it will decrease insulin resistance, which is a physiological precursor to diabetes," she says.

The research opportunity is part of Pickworth's scholarship from the NIH, which includes one more summer in the lab, followed by two years of working at the NIH.

Best in Several Lists
America's Best

Albion College made Princeton Review’s list of America's 377 Best Colleges again!

College guidebooks such as U.S. News and World Report and Fiske use alumni giving participation rates as the sole criterion to rate alumni satisfaction when completing overall institutional quality ratings. To move up (or maintain our place) in the rankings, and thus attract quality students, we must increase our alumni participation rate. These rankings also serve to increase the value of degrees from Albion College.

Point of Pride: Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center

The Albion College equestrian program was established in 2004 and offers something for everyone, from beginners through experienced competitors. Three intercollegiate riding teams compete in hunt seat, western, and dressage as part of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA).

Many students from all parts of the United States attend Albion because of the Equestrian Center -- either because of available horse boarding on campus or the riding programs.
