Stock Competition
by Alan Fahoury and Gabe Barrow
The Blade's Stock Competition is when the Toledo Blade gives your team 4 stocks each with a $10,000 in imaginery money to buy shares. You put that $40,000 of imaginery money into the stock market and who ever goes up the most in the 12 weeks wins. First place prize is $250 for the classroom and $250 for the school. Second place wins $250 for the classroom and third place wins $100 for the classroom.
Our boy's team, the Stocker, came in fourth place our of 153 teams at the end of the stock competition. The Stocket portfolio was made up of Apple, Nike, Under Armour, and Fusion Io. Until the middle of the competition, we were allowed to trade any of our stocks if we thought they weren't doing well. We did changed Nike to Dick's Sproting Goods because we thought they were going to go up because of spring sports. At the end of the competition, our ending value was $49,368.96. We were only $86.16 away from third place. However, 4th our of 153 teams is great and we are proud of our accomplishment.

May Crowning
by Abbi Weber, Tvisha Martin and Briana Palmer
In celebration of the holy life of the Blessed Virgin Mary and as part of our traditional honoring of Mary during the month of May, the eighth grade class took part in the crowning of Mary with a crown of flowers. The crowning of Mary is a privilege given to an eighth grade student and it is based on an essay with the topic "What Does the Blessed Virgin Mary Means to Me." The essays are then given to the faculty and staff to judge. The person with the winning essay gets the honor of crowning Mary and the second place writer gets to carry the crown. This year the court consists of Ema Fish, Gregory Fretti, Tvisha Martin, Briana Palmer and Abbi Weber. Tvisha Martin crowned Mary and Abbi Weber carried the crown.

Stock Update by Laura Mosler and Aubrey Self
Since February, the boys and girls of the sixth grade have been competing in the Toledo Blade Stock Contest. The girls placed between 120th to the 130th range throughout the competition. For the first half of the competition, the girls' stocks were Libby Glass, Vera Bradley, Starbucks and Coach. For the second half, they switched to Costco, Macy's and Bank of America. The girls decided to keep Coach because it was doing so well. Overall, the sixth grade girls team, "Sparkle" had two stocks that made an overall profit of $2,000 which isn't as much as the boys, but it is enough for us to feel good about ourselves and it was a great experience. |

Year Long Research Project
by Skylar Jolly and Spring Baumann
As an eighth grade student at St. Pius X, your Language Arts class is devoted to a research project that spans the entire year. The culmination of this project is our individual presentations at the end of the year. Each student gets to pick their own topic. This needs to be a topic that you are interested in and something that will also hold your interest for the entire year. After you pick your topic, then you are required to send out at least ten letters to different contacts requesting information and anything that will help you get a better understanding of your topic. Notebooks, binders and journals are also part of this project. Some of the YLRP topics this year include photography, NYC, honey, Candy, airlines, roller coasters around the world, Korea, and space aeronautics, to name a few.

Blue Jug Basketball Game
by Cullen Platz and Sung-Dae (Daniel) Kim
On April 20th the annual Blue Jug basketball game between our 7th and 8th grade students took place at St. Francis deSales High School. As part of the tradition, each team picks their team names and colors. Also, each player can decide their own nick names for this game. The 8th graders were the Gladiators and the 7th grade team picked the name of The Lucky Ducks. In the boys game, it came down to the very end as the game was filled with tension and the score going back anfd forth, not knowing which team was going to win. In the end, the 8th grade boys pulled it out by a score of 42-40. Unfortunately, the girls game was a bit different and everyone still had fun but The Lucky Ducks were crushed by the Gladiators with a score of 28-8. All in all, the Blue Jug was a fun game and fun time for all. |
