Ford's Focus
I also want to encourage everyone to take the Diversity & Inclusivity Climate Survey. It's important for David Gray, for me, and for everyone in Finance & Business.
We received a very nice letter from an alumna who thanked the entire landscaping crew for years and years of dedicated service. Her words reminded me that OPP's daily work has an impact that can last for years.
Finally, yes, researchers are looking for brains in this week's "Up for Grabs."

Safety Record
A Pain in the Glass
An employee cut his arm on broken glass while removing a bag of recycling from the ground floor of North Henderson. There are protection measures in place, but they can only go so far. A bag of broken glass is still a bag of broken glass.
While everyone is encouraged to recycle, please remember to PLACE glass bottles into recycling bins so they are less likely to break.
The Sting
An employee was stung by a wasp while pruning.
Remember to wear gloves whenever possible to protect your hands.
Gate Down
A wage payroll employee was badly bruised when his leg fell between a tailgate and a truck. He was loading and unloading material from a vehicle with a lowering lift gate. The procedure for this truck is to say aloud "Gate down!" but the employee did not hear the command and stepped back.
Please listen carefully for safety warnings, and be sure you are heard when issuing a warning.
As always, please report all safety hazards, near miss incidents, and safety success stories.
Call us at 863-2340.
Visit us, or even drop a note outside our office in 103 Physical Plant.
Let's have a safety record to crow about.

Announcements & Reminders
Relocate OPP Vehicles
Tomorrow is the next home football game. Please remember that all vehicles parked at the Physical Plant Building must be relocated behind the fenced area by the close of business today.
Diversity & Inclusion Survey
All employees should have recently received a message from David Gray asking you to participate in the important 2012 Diversity & Inclusion Climate Survey.
A separate message from Trish Evanitsky contained the link to start the survey (you can only access the survey from the link provided in your e-mail).
It only takes 5 minutes. If you haven't already, please open Trish's e-mail and help us assess the work environment in F&B.
Red Cross Drive
OPP and the Red Cross are hosting a blood drive next Wednesday, October 10, from 9 am to 3 pm.
The drive is is honor of Emily Whitehead who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010 and has been cancer free since 2012.
Donors will be entered to win tickets to the Ohio State or Wisconsin games and autographed balls from PSU coaches.
Click here to make an appointment.
University to Close on Friday after Thanksgiving
President Erickson announced on Thursday that the University will be officially closed on the Friday, November 23, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. "I want to extend a special thank you to our faculty and staff," Erickson said. "They have shown outstanding, sincere dedication to Penn State through the challenges of the past year."
This is a true closedown day, and employees should not come to work unless they are required to by their supervisor. Supervisors will plan for any required minimal staffing that day.
- Staff employees who normally work on Friday should mark the Friday after Thanksgiving as an Official Campus Closure.
- Technical Service employees who normally work on Friday should record ND-55 (misc) on their timecard for the Friday after Thanksgiving.
More information can be found in Live article and on the Human Resources site or by contacting Susan Rutan.
October Leadership Forum - For Supervisors
Please plan on attending one of these sessions:
- Monday, October 15, 3-5 pm
- Thursday, October 18, 7:30-9:30 am
- Friday, October 26, 8-10 am

Cheers
Letter of the Week
Alice Pope, a Penn State alumna, wrote a heartfelt letter to the landscaping crew because, in her words, "the recent distressing events have naturally brought my thoughts to Penn State, and I have been reflecting on the many ways that my time at the University has improved my life. One of my great joys was the many beautiful plantings on campus."
"For me, the experience of living and working on that beautiful campus left an indelible mark."
"When the tulips appeared each spring, at the end of a long, chilly, dark winter, it was as if fairies had been at work overnight."
"I am a university professor myself now, and in my work and travels have yet to see a campus that compares to ours."
"Please accept my deep thanks for the important ways you contributed to my time at Penn State, and to my life since then. I hope you know that there are many thousands of us thinking of everyone in Happy Valley with faith and love."
Committed Custodial Crew Cuts Campus...Waste
Thanks to help from a dedicated custodial staff, the Student Health Center has achieved what has only been achieved three times in the history of Penn State-diverting more than 60 percent of a campus building's waste.
OPP's Alan Witmer was instrumental in getting the process started, but it was the custodial crew who helped the diversion rate climb and climb. Well done!
The Center's Green Team has initiated building-wide composting and recycling, and individual departments pull out their unique packaging materials for recycling before they head to the landfill.
