Ford's Focus
There has been a flurry of activity over the past two weeks, but one project highlighted in the Cheers section exemplifies the strength of timing and teamwork.
Greek translations, water spots, and even vandalism brought together a broad OPP team to complete, dedicate, and protect the new Penn State Veterans Plaza.
Congratulations to all, and thank you.

Safety Record
Watch Your Fingers
An employee at the Steam Plant had a close call while he was trying to unplug a conveyor at the Baghouse fallout hopper. He placed his hand on the conveyor pipe to steady himself, the gate actuator moved, and he lacerated his finger.
Another employee razed their fingers on a door/cover housing. The poster to the right shows an over-dramatization of both events.
For more Cold War-era safety horror posters, click here.
Strains and Sprains
We had an employee strain their lower back pulling pipe. Improper lifting and/or pulling remain the leading causes of OPP injuries. Therefore, the September bimonthly meeting topic is the prevention of strains and sprains. Tech Service Supervisors should complete this vital safety meeting with their crews and return sign-in sheets to Melissa Walker, 103 OPP, by October 19.
Asbestos Awareness Training
Any tech service employee who has an increased risk of working around asbestos is required to complete online training through the Summit website by October 12th. Please contact Jennifer Kness by e-mail or at 863-5528 with questions or for help logging into the site.
As always, please report all safety hazards, near miss incidents, and safety success stories.
Call us at 863-2340.
Visit us, or even drop a note outside our office in 103 Physical Plant.
Let's have a safety record to crow about.

Cheers
Veterans Plaza
Congratulations go out to Rachel Prinkey, Jeff Dice, Wayne Gates, and the entire OPP team who finished work on the Penn State Veterans Plaza in time for its dedication last Friday, despite many unforeseen glitches.
Greeks
When early pictures of the memorial went up on Facebook the Tuesday before the dedication, one viewer noticed that one of the customized, pre-cast Greek letters was incorrect.
It turned out that Microsoft Word's "autocorrection" had fouled up the e-mailed transcription. Jeremy Smith and Jon Daulby were able to fabricate a correct, temporary back-up letter and make sure the color and finish matched the existing letters with just a few hours to go.
Spots
Immediately before the dedication, Jeff Kokoskie noticed water spots on the granite sculpture from the day's sod watering. He called Sherry Pinamonti who had Mike Habovick's cleaning crew on the scene while the formal dedication was going on in Schwab Auditorium. The granite was polished to a mirror-like finish by the time attendees walked to the site.
Vandals
The OPP congratulations don't end there. Early Monday morning, Jeff Dice noticed that a vandal had put bicycle tread marks all over the memorial over the weekend, and he immediately alerted the police.
Again, pictures of the plaza went up on Facebook. Within hours, members of the student veterans organization, veterans fraternity, and other volunteers arrived with scrub brushes and buckets of water to clean the tread marks off as well as they could.
Jeremy Smith and his crew finished the job Tuesday morning. Bob Waldhuber and the ACES team then deployed a portable surveillance unit to keep an eye on the memorial 24/7.
The memorial now stands, grammatically correct, shiningly new, as a monument to our nation's bravest.
Reinventing the Wheel
Cheers to Lydia Vandenbergh and the entire Campus Sustainability Office team for a hugely successful Environmental Forum on Wednesday. Nearly 200 people attended with several dozen through Adobe Connect.
Steve Maruszewski reported that "More than 1,100 Penn State employees live within 1 mile of campus and still hold a parking pass." David Gray encouraged faculty, staff, and students to consider transportation and commuting alternatives to make Penn State a "happier, better, and healthier place."
Watch for John Bechtel and the OPP Bumblebee Bikers at 4:30.
Tea Time
Outside of her job as the Director of Facilities Resources and Planning, Deb Howard is the Senior Advisor to the Tea Institute at Penn State, which held a tea ceremony last Saturday. With help from Deb, the Institute runs the Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Tea Ceremony clubs as well as the Penn State Tea House in 34-35 Ritenour Building.
