Ford's Focus

We've had a great week so far with well-deserved recognition for hard work and a strong commitment to coworkers.

We've had only a few injuries, and the word from Don Fronk and Jennifer Kness is that the number of hazards recognized, reported, and resolved has increased since our new focus on safety. That is good news for everyone.

Keep it up, and have a great week.

Ford
Safety Record

We had four injuries reported this week and several lessons learned.

Quick as a Wink

While a steam plant employee was performing work on one of the boilers, ash and dust dropped down and into his eyes. He was wearing his safety glasses, but the material fell over the top.

Remember that safety glasses are made to resist impacts, but safety goggles give you full protection.

Overreaching Can Strain Even a Crane

Improper lifting and twisting led to an employee strain and sprain injury while erecting and dismantling a scaffolding assembly.

Remember that overreaching can lead to serious injury.

Click here for tips on lifting awkward loads and general back injury prevention.

Going Down?

We had two trip-and-fall injuries.
One employee tripped and fell while exiting an elevator and the other slipped on some steps.

Click here for tips on avoiding slips and falls.

As always, please report all safety hazards, near miss incidents, and safety success stories.

More than Just a Pretty Face

Congratulations to Al Matyasovsky who was selected as one of the new "Faces of Penn State." This University-wide campaign is a showcase for people who embody Penn State's values of teaching, research, and service. You can read Al's story, "Developing Solutions to Measure Waste Reduction" here and find out more about the program and how to nominate a co-worker here.

One of the students quoted in the story described him this way, "He's hard working, modest and caring ... Al Matyasovsky, to me, is Penn State." Please join us in congratulating Al at aem3@psu.edu.

Help in the Hour of Need

Congratulations to the employees from Electrical Tech, Fire, and Security Safety who received Superior Performance Awards on Monday. All reacted quickly and professionally when Denny Seaward fell ill with heart attack symptoms.

Be sure to drop them a line of congratulations and thanks.

Mike and Ike

The Spikes season is over, but the memories live on. Mike Wilks is an Environmental Systems Tech with OPP. He auditioned and was selected to be one of only five performers to sing our national anthem a cappella at a Spikes game this summer. Here he is posing with Ike.
