Ford's Focus
This week I want to focus on Physical Plant's commitment to safety. You are our greatest resource, and the key to OPP's success is your well-being.
As part of our commitment, we are posting the OPP Safety Mission Statement, signed by OPP leadership, in the lobby. Among other important points, it highlights that employee safety is everyone's right and responsibility:
"Every leader will provide necessary safety resources and take responsibility for making improvements to the workplace so work can be performed safely."
"Every employee is empowered and encouraged to speak up when encountering an unsafe situation or act."
I want to emphasize this last point. You are our eyes and ears, and we want to hear from you. We want you to spot, avoid, and report hazards. We want you to look around and speak up.
You will start to see this "Commitment to Safety" poster in all break rooms, work areas, and conference rooms. It includes an e-mail (OPPsafety@psu.edu), phone number (3-2340), and office location (103 Physical Plant) to "Report Safety and Near Miss Incidents."
In addition, starting this week, each issue of News & Views will include a Safety Report highlighting accidents, near misses, and safety successes.
Be safe. It's important.

Safety Report
As a reminder of the importance of workplace safety, each week's Safety Report will include a list of injuries, near misses, and success stories. You can click on the images for more information about any of these hazards.
Injuries
A worker in Area 1 shop lacerated his hand with a knife.
A utilities employee was walking behind an OPP truck to be sure the tailgate was closed when he tripped on a piece of sod.
Near Misses/Minor Injuries
An employee working in Beaver Stadium was hoisting up tools and a fan with a rope on the roof of the east mechanical room. As he leaned against the guardrail, it broke away from the wall where it was bolted in. The employee and the rail fell forward, but a drainpipe luckily stopped the fall, resulting in only a minor injury to his thumb.
Successes Rettew, the company that provides our Confined Space Rescue Training, demonstrated rescue procedures for Boiler #2 at the West Campus Steam Plant. Don Fronk and Jen Kness provided confined space training for Central Labor and Equipment Crews, Heat and Vent as well as the Areas 5 and 6 shops. As always, please report all safety hazards, near miss incidents, and safety success stories. Call us at 863-2340. Visit us, or even drop an anonymous note outside our office in 103 Physical Plant. |
