Ford's Focus
I want to cheer this year's winners of the Spirit of Physical Plant Awards. These employees were nominated by their coworkers and supervisors and honored at a small ceremony on Wednesday. I hope everyone will take a moment to read the quotes from the nominations, check out pictures from the event on Flickr, and feel free to send the recipients an e-mail to congratulate them.
Also, don't forget to check out the new items for sale in the "Up for Grabs" section.
See you next week!

Announcements & Reminders
What Are Your Turn-Offs?
Don't forget, we're in the middle of the test (4 pm to 5 pm today) to see how well Penn State can reduce its electricity load during an emergency. This is important to utility companies because it helps them avoid blackouts. OPP will be working behind the scenes, but all employees are asked to turn off unnecessary lighting, office equipment, coffee pots, dehumidifiers, and air conditioning. You can read the full story on Penn State Live and use our Yammer page to offer your "turn-offs" to use less electricity.
OPP Operations Utility Tours
There have been many requests for OPP Utility Tours this year. For dates and times, or to sign up, e-mail Tammy Steiner at tlq1@psu.edu.
Purchasing Cards
All P-Card transactions (including purchases and travel) must be reconciled by June 30.

Katz Building Elevator Repair
The dean of the law school, Philip McConnaughhay, sent out a special thanks to the team that identified why their elevator was vibrating (hydraulic piston packing), fixed the problem (adding a "Teflon Style" additive to the hydraulic oil), and added fasteners to the cab walls.
Elevator Supervisor: Mark Gates
Elevator Tech: Neil Whittaker
Work Reception Center: Theresa Lynn Maher
Spirit of Physical Plant Awards
Janitorial
"Gary goes above and beyond what is asked of him to help his customers and coworkers and continues to be one of the best custodians we have at Physical Plant."
"Greg is someone that Penn State can be proud of, and all of his customers like him because he cares."
"In the short time I have been at the Katz Building, I have seen the building evolve from a 'team-cleaned' building to a building cleaned by a TEAM. That is due to Alice's leadership."
Technical Service
"Jim is a tireless employee who bleeds Blue and White. It is sure nice to know you can call and get help from a true professional who cares and understands."
"Dave provides excellent service with a terrific attitude. Dave is as good as they come--as a person, an electrician, and an employee of OPP."
"Anyone who has had the opportunity to work with Jeff would agree that, on a daily basis, he is working at the highest level and deserves to be recognized for his outstanding effort."
Staff
"Biff is one of the best janitorial supervisors here. She treats employees as equals, yet maintains respect for her position. I have come to look at her as more of a mentor than a boss."
"Mack is always willing to drop whatever he is doing to help out others. He is a good leader and is easy and fun to work with."
"Regardless of how many times I have to call (sometimes several calls in one day!), Bill is ALWAYS pleasant, calm, and polite and assures me that our problem will be handled soon. I consider all of us in Area 2 fortunate to have him at the service desk!"
You can view snapshots from the event on our Flickr site.

Photo(s) of the Week
The heads of three cats are stenciled on a concrete underpass near the Organic Materials Processing and Education Center (OMPEC). On his waste tours, Al Matyasovsky refers to them as the "Compost Kitties."
