1. Increased Interest in Front Yards

It seems that people have taken a new interest in their front yards and are thinking outside the box about how to use this space. We've seen lawns torn out in favor of native meadows, outdoor living spaces created just steps from the street and thriving vegetable gardens planted right outside the front door. We predict that this push towards "reclaiming the front yard" will continue into 2012.

2. Landscapes that Reflect One's Lifestyle

Landscaping is no longer about an area of lawn for the dog and some attractive flowers. Homeowners want gardens that they can live in and that reflect their personalities. This year we've seen family-friendly backyard retreats complete with pools, spas, outdoor kitchens and sports courts. There have also been many empty-nester gardens with private dining areas, outdoor fireplaces, spas and vegetable gardens. Additionally, nature-loving homeowners have created lawnless habitat gardens that attract birds, butterflies and other animals.

3. Gardens Styled According to their Architecture and Surroundings

Most popular project: Hillside Renovation

In 2011, more and more homeowners turned to landscaping professionals for help with their outdoor spaces. The old status quo of plopping a few of the plants pushed by the big box stores in the ground was challenged. Gardens inspired by existing architecture and the surrounding environment are gaining popularity. According to designer Lisa Port, "Paying close attention to the architectural style of the home should take the lead in the styling of the landscape." We profiled one of her Seattle projects that shows how taking the architecture and surroundings into account leads to a garden with a strong sense of indoor-outdoor connection as well as a connection to the larger landscape or community.
