One Week at a Time

South Dakota State Next on Illini Schedule

Greetings!

Week 1 is in the bank and what a victory. Nothing is better than Illinois football in the fall .... oops, I mean in the summer. Was it hot or what? The team came ready to play and that deserves a tip of the hat to the coaches and trainers. Last weeks guest speaker, Coach Hernandez had the team ready to play. People were dropping like flies in the east stands, but the players on the field were in top condition and ready to play.

Week 2 has South Dakota State on the schedule. Get ready for the game by planning to attend Friday's QBC lunch at The Round Barn. New AD Mike Thomas will be the featured speaker and is sure to share his observations on his whirlwind move to the helm of a Big Ten athletic program that has only lost one game since his arrival. GO ILLINI!

It was great to see all of the Quarterback Club members who were able to stop by our new Tailgate Tent.  A pre-game party put on by WDWS and the Quarterback Club is definitely worth stopping by to enjoy. The staff of WDWS and Nelson's Catering sure can put on a show and, what better way to prepare for kickoff than a visit from the Marching Illini. Special thanks go out to County Market, Miller Lite, Herriott's Party Rental, Columbia Street Roastery and the Champaign and Urbana Park Districts. And, a very special thank you for help yet to come! Midwest Pottyhouse has saved the day and we will have porta toilets by the tent for all upcoming games. If you see the Kempers, make sure you thank them for being such great QBC members.

If you didn't get a chance to stop by last week, try to make it this week. General admission tickets are $20, but QBC members and their quests only pay $10. This week's menu will include Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Italian Beef, all the side fixings and three beer tickets. Now, that's the best deal in town! So, see you at the game. Go Illini!

Who's Speaking This Week
Meet New AD Mike Thomas at this Week's QBC Lunch

Our new Fighting Illini Athletic Director is in place and on the job. Can you imagine the schedule he must be keeping. Trying to meet and spend time with all of his coaches, (not just football) support staff, players, faculty and alumni, while at the same time getting his arms around the complexities of his new position must be overwhelming.

Even so, Mike Thomas will take time to speak at the Illini Quarterback Club, this Friday.

Mike Thomas was named the 18th Director of Athletics at the University of Illinois on August. 10, 2011, after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at the University of Cincinnati. Thomas, 51, led a vibrant and successful Bearcats athletic program from 2005-11, winning five Big East team titles, an NCAA individual championship and producing 12 All-Americans in a wide range of sports and earning multiple Big East academic excellence awards.

Joining Coach Thomas at this weeks luncheon will be Associate Athletic Director Tom Michael.

Last week, our first QBC lunch of the year, we had a record turn out. The word is out that this team is for real. If you want the inside story, don't miss this weeks featured speaker, AD Mike Thomas.
