VARSITY SEASON COMES TO AN END IN BC PLACE

For the first time since 2007 the Hyacks played at BC Place Stadium, unfortunately the result was not what we were hoping for. New West fell 52-20 to Centennial in the wildcard playoff round, ending their season. Eric Teng, Jeremy Wilson and Pavan Mrock scored for the Hyacks while Makoto Brennen led the team with 10 tackles. New West finishes the 2011 season with a 4-6 record.

It was a season of ups and downs, highlighted by a very good home record at Mercer stadium. A thrilling victory in the final game of the regular season allowed the Hyacks to get into the playoffs for the 5th straight season. And while the unusually high number of injuries made it difficult for the team to realize its potential, it also created some opportunities for others to get more playing time, which should help us to improve in 2012 and go deeper into the playoffs.

PLAYOFF VICTORY FOR JV'SFall

The JV season will continue, thanks to a 15-14 win over Kelowna in the opening round of the playoffs last Thursday at Burnaby Lake. Tristan Sands opened the scoring for the Hyacks, catching a 20 yard TD pass from James Sommerfeld. The Hyacks then added a safety, but trailed 14-8 at half-time. Sommerfeld called his own number from a yard out and Kale Brock's PAT proved to be the winning points.

Defensively the JVs were very good in the 2nd half. Sands intercepted a pass, while the linebacker corps of Stewart Sommerfeld, Nathan Macedo and Julian Ramirez took turns making big plays. The Hyacks advance to the AAA quarter-finals against Terry Fox this Friday. Kickoff is at 5:30 pm at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

JUNIOR BANTAMS MEMORABLE SEASON COMES TO AN ENDpampering

The Jr Bantams wrapped up their best season ever, falling 30-24 to South Delta at Mercer Stadium on Friday night. The Hyacks came into the VMFL semi-final game with a perfect 10-0 record to that point. Chenghao Cui, Aaron Purdey, Milan Scekic and the rest of the coaching staff are to be commended for their outstanding work with these young men. This was a group that had many spectacular individual performances throughout the season, but they epitomized a team game with solid fundamentals and plenty of spirit. While the loss was a disappointing one, the JBs have given us plenty of reason for optimism that there will be many more wins for the Hyacks as they move into the high school program.

The pee wees also reached the playoffs for the first time ever, before dropping a 24-7 decision to first place Cloverdale on Sunday. The Atom team posted a winning record at the season ending jamboree in Coquitlam and the flag team wing 2-0-1 at their jamboree. Overall it was a very successful season for the Royal City youth program and they will celebrate their season at the awards banquet this Wed, Nov 16th at the Justice Institute at 6:15 pm
