  • Mom, son co-author book on living with a sibling with autism.  Younger children need age-appropriate information, says Karlene Reid.  It was an emotional and poignant question from her son, showing the depth of his struggle with his brother's autism diagnosis that began Karlene Reid's journey to find some way to help him.  But he was only six at the time and the services she looked at suggested that he was too young to really understand what was happening. So she decided to do something herself, looking to this same son to help her. Click here to learn more
  • Gut Bacteria May Hold Key to Autism. Mother of autistic son finds open minds at U of G.

Ellen Bolte couldn't believe what she was hearing. This past winter, the 53-year-old mom of four from suburban Chicago was making her first-ever visit to the University of Guelph. And what she was learning from researchers here sounded like hope.  It had been nearly two decades since Bolte had begun investigating possible links between gut bacteria and autism, spurred by her son's debilitating experience with the disease.  Over the years she'd encountered plenty of skeptical doctors and scientists in the United States who refused to countenance a gut-brain connection - let alone a theory being pushed by someone lacking a formal background in either medicine or research.  Now she was at Guelph, and she was hearing something that "blew me away."  Click here to read more

  • WIRED MAGAZINE: Air-Pumped Mascot Costumes Turn Autistic Kids Into Outgoing Entertainers.

....But it's not just audiences who react in a different way to the blow-up suits. Performing in a WalkAround, it turns out, can be a transformative experience.

In 2005, Lee Bowen went to a firefighter convention in Indianapolis to hawk blow-up suits and fire safety programs-a side business that had evolved out of the mascot thing. Bowen needed someone to demo a suit, so he asked a custodian named Sherri Hughes if she had a kid who might want to make a few bucks. Hughes agreed, but her youngest son bailed. Instead, Hughes showed up with her son Joe, an 18-year-old who was, as Hughes put it, nonsocial. "He won't look at anybody or approach anybody," she says. "All he does is look at the floor and mumble." But Bowen needed that demo. They decided Joe would give it a try. "You wouldn't believe it. This kid was fine," Hughes says. "He started running up to people and tapping them on the shoulder. I started crying. It is the only time I've seen my son having a good time and reaching out to people. He told me, 'Mom, when I'm in the suit, I don't need to be afraid no more. I can be with people.'" Click here to read more

  • Cognitive changes may be only sign of fetal alcohol exposure. Most children exposed to high levels of alcohol in the womb do not develop the distinct facial features seen in fetal alcohol syndrome, but instead show signs of abnormal intellectual or behavioral development, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health and researchers in Chile. These abnormalities of the nervous system involved language delays, hyperactivity, attention deficits or intellectual delays. The researchers used the term s functional neurologic impairment to describe these abnormalities.. The study authors documented an abnormality in one of these areas in about 44 percent of children whose mothers drank four or more drinks per day during pregnancy. In contrast, abnormal facial features were present in about 17 percent of alcohol exposed children.  Click here to read more
  • Effects of Heavy Alcohol Exposure During Pregnancy Evaluated.  "After exposure to heavy alcohol consumption during pregnancy, 80% of children had one or more abnormalities associated with alcohol exposure," the authors write. "Functional neurologic impairment occurred most frequently and may be the only sign to alert physicians to prenatal alcohol exposure."  Click here to read more
