Autism - Autism and working through getting blood work. I received a frantic call from a parent requesting help for her son. He was scheduled to have lab work that morning and her husband, who helped to restrain him in the past, was out of town. The child, a 16 year old with an Asperger's diagnosis and two cochlear implants, had not been able to make it through a blood test without a physical intervention. Click here to read more

ADD/ADHD - Keeping My ADHD Brain Active in Summer. A summer job sounds like a drag, but it's also an absolute necessity. My dad says ADHD people are like trains: We function best on a track. Take away the "rails" that guide our lives, and we start crashing into things and rushing off cliffs. Medical - The Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre and the FORCE Society for Kids' Mental Health are pleased to announce an amazing lineup of educational events for the first half of the year 2012. The popular and much-anticipated 2012 Family Focus Conference will be held in Langley, B.C. on October 19-21, 2012. Family Focus Society organizes conferences by and for families who support a child or adult with a developmental disability. The society's mission is to "enhance family strengths and resources through direct family involvement that preserves the dignity of all families within their community." - The 3rd Health and Wellbeing in Children, Youth and Adults with Developmental Disabilities Conference November 15-17, 2012. This conference will provide educational and informative updates on psychiatric, behavioural and complex health components specific to individuals with DD, and showcase best practices in the field. Specifically, the conference will focus on approaches to complex challenging behaviours, contributing medical issues and new developments in medication and behavioural treatment. In addition, the conference will address important health and mental health issues and will review common genetic syndromes such as Down Syndrome. This conference will engage health care providers and educators from a wide range of professional disciplines in knowledge transfer and interprofessional collaboration in order to maximize health and wellbeing so as to minimize disability and improve quality of life. Thanks for your interest in the SFU Social Science Camp!
Before registering, you MUST read the following:
1. This is a FREE , fun, and educational camp for children aged 8-12 with or without Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The camp for children without ASD will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 9am- 3pm. The camp for children with ASD will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2012 from 9am- 3pm. Camp volunteers are composed of SFU faculty, students, and community professionals. All children will receive a cool SFU Social Science Camp T-shirt!
2. One part of the camp involves your child participating in a research study. The research study requires minimal participation, the majority of the day is devoted to fun crafts and interactive game activities. During the study, your child will be asked to play a series of fun computer games, word games, puzzles, etc. Your child will be given the option to participate and he or she can chose to withdraw from the study at any time. Parents will receive a summary of the results once the study is finished so you can benefit from the information we have learned. Parents/ caregivers will be required to submit the required consent forms and questionnaires before the camp starts. Please note that for ethical reasons, we can only provide group results (children without ASD and children with ASD) and not individual test scores. All data collected is kept confidential and is for research purposes only.
3. If you have a child with ASD, please note that for this first year we are limiting participation to children who meet our research criteria. We have very limited resources and we are not able to accommodate children who need 1:1 supervision or who have many special needs. If your child is not selected for camp this year, it is not a problem with your child it has to do with our strict research criteria. We hope that future camps will be able to accommodate more children of all abilities!

New Step Consultation Services Inc. Summer Social Skills Camp
In small group settings, each participant will be given the opportunity to interact with other children/teenagers of similar age through a variety of arts and craft activities, snack making, group sports and games (indoor and outdoor). Most importantly, each participant will also learn valuable relationship development skills specifically related to taking part in a group setting. The curriculum consists of different theme each week. A handbook will be given at the end of each week for parents to continue to work on specific social topic with their child at home. - Program to Help Teens Make and Keep Friends Based on PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills), this successful 14--week evidence--based program is designed for parents and motivated teenagers who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. During each group session teens are taught socially valid friendship skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills through role plays and socialization activities. - Adaptive Learners with Technology: The Gateways Adaptive Lego Program offers small group instruction to meet the needs of clients with cognitive disabilities. It is taught by instructors able to use specialized techniques and adaptations. We have had great success in teaching children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD/ADHD, The skills developed within this program have provided lasting benefits and often led to an increased willingness in the student to try other new activities,
Our goal is to provide consistency and support for any behavioral learning strategies which may already be taking place, all leading to further development and independence of the child.

Our teachers provide individual and team projects with time included for sharing ideas and creations. - KIDSMATTER: Langley and Abbotsford! Summer camps will be running in Abbottsford and Langley for 2012. Children with learning disabilities, sensory processing disorders, Asperger's Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, neurological disorders, and emotional disabilities often need additional training in social skills. Our summer camps are Social Skills groups for children age 6 to 15. The one week camps provide families the flexibility to benefit from the Socials Skills programs and get away for family time. - Eureka Outdoor Camp! Eureka Outdoor Camp provides a safe, caring residential camp experience for children with neurological deficits. Our program supports the development of social skills, self awareness and independence. Most of all, we are about having fun and making new friends. Located on the north arm of Deka Lake, YMCA Camp Deka offers warm lake waters and abundant forests with ample room for campers to learn independence and interdependence through community living. Fun-filled days of physical activity in the outdoors promote healthy habits and environmental stewardship to last a lifetime.
Since 1990, campers have enjoyed Deka's vast wilderness of breathtaking vistas, beaver dams, eagle nests, fish runs and deer paths. Activities include swimming, archery, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, and rock climbing.

- Art & Music Camps! Come and join our "Expressive Arts Therapy" summer program designed for youth & adults with disabilities with an arts & music therapy approach. Here, participants with an interest in arts & music can find a place where they will feel a strong sense of belonging and build life skills. Our goal is to increase options leading to full citizenship for people with developmental disabilities. Anyone who has run a program or workshop for dads knows that finding a successful format can be hit and miss - there's no secret formula that guarantees that fathers will come or keep attending. Dads of different ages, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic conditions often have different needs and what will draw them to a program can vary greatly. - 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games to be held in Langley! We are pleased to announce that the 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games will be held in the Township of Langley from July 11 to 14, 2013, with the support of the Township and the Langley School District. The Games will feature more than 1,100 Special Olympics athletes from the eight SOBC regions and the Yukon competing in 11 summer sports: 5- and 10-pin bowling, aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, rhythmic gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer and softball. Athletes will show their love of sport and their inspiring sportsmanship as they compete for the opportunity to advance to the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, which will be held in Vancouver.
