Help a Parent?
  • Hi, a family is moving to White Rock from Ontario and looking to connect with families that can provide information on the area....let me know if you can help and I will forward your contact info on. Please respond to Cyndi at email here
  • From a MOMS parent: One of the best tools I've come across for determining if you are on the right treatment track(s) for your child is by checking your child's ATEC scores on a regular basis. I'm sure many of us are using this tool but I think I've only ever heard it talked about once in this group, so I wanted to mention it for those families whom are not using it or have not even ever heard of it.The ATEC survey was put together by the Autism Research Institute (ARI) in the hopes of offering a way to evaluate treatment protocols. A more complete description of it's aims is found here
The survey literally takes less than 10 minutes to fill out and when you complete it you will immediately be sent your child's score via e-mail. It is free and can be completed as often as you like.  The survey is found here.  If you have never taken the survey I highly recommend you do so. Actually I would highly recommend that you start by taking it twice. Do the first one answering the survey questions going back in time to when your child was first diagnosed. Then complete a second survey answering the questions with where your child is at today. I think and hope that you will be pleasantly surprised at the difference between the survey scores. We endeavour to take the survey every 3 months AND every time we start a new protocol. If you find the survey useful please think about passing on the suggestion to other families (especially new families who are just looking into starting therapies for their child).

  •  Autism Team: Changing Lives.  A team of leading autism experts work together to help children and families that are struggling with autism. The A-Team spreads hope and changes lives by teaching and applying comprehensive "whole body" treatments. Spreading awareness of this broader approach is a prime objective of the global autism community.
The A-Team has already helped many children and families - and, have been documenting their efforts and positive results along the way. The aim is to create a reality/documentary style television program that can reach millions of people worldwide.

  • Riding the Dark Horse: What Neil Young Taught Me About Autism and Fear. FDR was famous for saying, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." I have thought of this often in recent years, mostly in connection with Danny, my 16-year-old son who was diagnosed with autism at age 3. I've come to realize that fear is key to understanding how Danny's mind works. He is frequently tormented by fear and anxiety -- like any other teen -- but he can't articulate those fears the way another boy might. He's had a lot of changes to cope with: parents divorcing, switching schools, moving to a new apartment, a beloved therapist leaving the country. Even when a change is good, as we all know, it can sometimes be accompanied by fear.  Click here to read more

  • VIDEO: No Pity.  Autism disability self-advocates' empowered response to our culture's pity for the disabled.  Drew Morton Goldsmith is no stranger to the art of filmmaking. In the past six years he has already built a resume that would make any Tisch student green around the gills: participation in more than 20 international film festivals with his film Treasure Diversity and awards from YouTube (at age 10, for the Sky's the Limit contest) and the United Nations.

But it's not the accolades that motivate Drew to continue his work. As a fifteen year old with "significant disabilities," Drew is passionate about using filmmaking to open people's hearts and expand their minds.  Drew found inspiration in a challenging moment several years ago, when his favorite English teacher, in a well-meaning gesture, told him that she was going to make a donation to a certain Autism charity. As an Autism self-advocate, Drew knew this charity to rely on what he calls "pity-based marketing."  He decided to use filmmaking as a means to expose this technique, and to articulate the way it feels to be the person who is characterized as pitiable for the sake of fundraising.  Click here to see this video

  • Ladyhawke: Asperger's and the anxious pop sensation. The synth pop songstress tells Elisa Bray that her new album reflects a struggle to reconcile success and syndrome. Pip Brown, better known as Ladyhawke, is still buzzing from her gig four nights ago. It was the culmination of a comeback tour which saw the New Zealander's first UK performances in two years, and the London show had sold out in five minutes. "It was mind-blowing," she enthuses over a pint at an east London pub near where she lives, producing a picture of the ecstatic crowd, arms aloft, on her iPhone. "I had to take a picture on stage because I couldn't believe it."  Click here to read more

  • Autism In Teens - Teaching Social Skills Pays Off.  In 2006, the UCLA Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) clinic was established in order to help high functioning adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) improve their social skills to fit in better with their peers at school.Although PEERS was shown to be effective in earlier studies, researchers were still unsure as to whether the new skills "stuck" with these adolescents after they completed the PEERS classes.Click here to read more
Now, results from a long-term follow-up study show that these teens maintained the skills taught, and in some cases even improved. The study is published in the current edition of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.
  • Brain Scans Detect Early Signs of Autism in InfantsScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) - A new study shows significant differences in brain development in high-risk infants who develop autism starting as early as age 6 months. The findings published in the American Journal of Psychiatry reveal that this abnormal brain development may be detected before the appearance of autism symptoms in an infant's first year of life. Autism is typically diagnosed around the age of 2 or 3. Click here to read more

  • Kids With Learning Disorders Might Not Benefit From Memory Training Programs. Children with disorders, such as dyslexia or attention-deficit/hyperactivity, are not likely to benefit from working memory training, say researchers.  The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Oslo and University College London and published online in The British Journal of Developmental Psychology, also found that memory training tasks have limited effect on healthy children and adults seeking to improve their cognitive skills or do better in school. • ACT presents: Michelle Garcia Winner & Carol Gray Together at the Vancouver Convention Centre In this very special event, Michelle Garcia Winner, speech language pathologist and founder of Social Thinking, joins forces with Carol Gray, the teacher who 20 years ago transformed attitudes to working with children with ASD and associated disorders by conceptualizing Social Stories™. Both Michelle and Carol are very popular with ACT audiences. They share a tough, passionate and practical attitude about the necessity for communities to change the ways we support those with social differences and the powerful role families and teachers can play in setting up children for success in adulthood. You will laugh as you learn from these two master teachers who are rarely available to speak together. This is a unique occasion to be inspired by two women who have impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and adults with ASD.Thursday, August 16th & Friday, August 17th  Click here for more information\ call the ACT office at 604-205-5467 or toll-free at 1-866-939-5188

Come with your family and prepare to be nourished!

Instructor and Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Kate Hutchinson, works nationally and internationally with families with special needs children, helping them to optimize the health and development of their children, and themselves, using nutrition.  If you've ever wondered if food could make a significant difference, this is the program for you.  This course is for anyone who desires to positively impact the health (physical, mental, and emotional), of a child or a family member through food, drink and other natural therapies. Using wisdom from the past, rather than the latest trends, this course will surprise you, inspire you, and give you faith that positive change is possible and within your grasp. Participants will gain the information they need to make informed choices around food for children with special needs. Kate will reveal how foods can challenge or support mood, brain function, digestion, the nervous system, the immune system, and physical development.

Over the five days, we will create an individualized plan for your child so that you can implement dietary change immediately upon returning home. Common conditions that often accompany our special needs children's diagnosis, such as asthma, allergies, eczema, food intolerance, picky eating, sensory issues, constipation, diarrhea/loose stools, and other digestive issues will all be addressed. contact Whole Family Nutrition (604) 708-8205 Click here for our website
