- FROM NLC: SHOULD I TELL MY CHILD THAT HE OR SHE IS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM?
- This is probably one of the most common questions. It's not easy knowing what to do, especially if you're not sure if your child is aware of his differences. Stephen Shore is a world renowned speaker and professional in the field of autism. Having Asperger's himself and having helped thousands of people on their journey with autism, who better than to give advice? In this short video, Stephen talks about disclosure and helps parents make decisions when talking to their kids. Click here to see a video!

- Making (and keeping) friends: A model for social skills instruction. Dr. Scott Bellini Indeed, many parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) echo this sentiment concerning their child's social functioning. They know that their child has many wonderful qualities to offer others, but the nature of their disability, or more precisely, their poor social skills, often preclude them from establishing meaningful social relationships. This frustration is amplified when parents know that their children want desperately to have friends, but fail miserably when trying to make friends. Often, their failure is a direct result of ineffectual programs and inadequate resources typically made available for social skills instruction. For most children, basic social skills (e.g., turn taking, initiating conversation) are acquired quickly and easily. For children with ASD, the process is much more difficult. Whereas, many children learn these basic skills simply by exposure to social situations, children with ASD often need to be taught skills explicitly, and as early as possible. Click here to read more

ADD/ADHD - My Story: Raising (and Surviving) Three ADHD Children. She raised three children with ADHD. She survived and her kids thrived. A mom looks back on the happy, maddening years. Tonight my husband and I dismantled our dilapidated vanity to make way for a shiny new one. Strange as it sounds, I was awash with emotion - a mixture of wonder and elation and the desire to throw my hat in the air while twirling around in the street - as I helped haul the old vanity to the trash. Believe it or not, that crummy vanity started me down memory lane because it was a fixture in our house while I was raising my three children, all of whom happen to have ADHD. Click here to read more
- ADHD Parenting Tips: Better Discipline. Tired of nagging and yelling at your children? Read on for parenting tips and better ways to discipline children with ADHD. Like all kids, children with attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD) sometimes make bad choices regarding their own behavior. No surprise there. But to make matters worse, parents could often use a few parenting tips themselves, and err in the way they discipline misbehavior. Instead of using firm, compassionate discipline, they move into what I call the ignore-nag-yell-punish cycle. Click here to read more
- Learn About ADHD: Focus on Hyperfocus. Information about ADHD symptom of hyperfocus -- a common symptom that explains why many attention deficit children and adults can concentrate so intently at times. It's no secret that children and adults with attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD) often struggle to focus on tasks they find uninteresting. High distractibility -- in children with ADHD who are unable to stay focused on a classroom lecture or in adults with ADD who never get around to doing their paperwork -- is a key ADHD symptom and diagnosis criterion. When Families Take the Lead...anything is possible!
You are invited to join Janet Klees, the Coordinator of Deohaeko Support Network in Ontario, to explore what is possible when families are brave, creative and believe in their family members. This is a session primarily for families who want to make a positive difference in the lives of their children now and into the future. It is an opportunity for families to see what happens when we look at gifts and contributions rather than focus on problems; when we look for what is similar, not different; when we join in community, rather than move away from it. This session will take place Sunday, June 24th 2012 beginning at 1:00 pm with through to 5pm and refreshments will be provided. It will be held at Alexandra Neighbourhood House, Lodge Lounge, 2916 McBride Avenue, Crescent Beach, Surrey BC.Please note that there is no charge for this event, but we will be asking that each person donate what they can, to cover the cost of expenses and contribute toward Janet's time. The afternoon is being organized by a small group of families and friends interested in person and family governed options, and is part of a voluntary initiative called IMAGINE.
Preregistration is required. You can register by phone by leaving your name and contact information with Cheryl Hughes at 604 542-4817 or Email here!
- The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) invites you to a discussion about MSD supports and PWD benefits. As a result the Assistant Deputy Minister, Molly Harrington, and a few of her colleagues have agreed to host a few family meetings. We are hopeful that this will be a place where people can come together, have their questions answered in
person and engage in a dialogue about the PWD benefits and other programs the ministry offers; what works for individuals and families and suggestions on what might work better. When: VANCOUVER June 27, 2012 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Where: FSI offices 227 6th Street, New Westminster, BC V3L 3A5 If you have questions you would like to submit ahead of time please send to Angela Clancy at aclancy@fsibc.com
- ACT presents: Michelle Garcia Winner & Carol Gray Together at the Vancouver Convention Centre In this very special event, Michelle Garcia Winner, speech language pathologist and founder of Social Thinking®, joins forces with Carol Gray, the teacher who 20 years ago transformed attitudes to working with children with ASD and associated disorders by conceptualizing Social Stories™. Both Michelle and Carol are very popular with ACT audiences. They share a tough, passionate and practical attitude about the necessity for communities to change the ways we support those with social differences and the powerful role families and teachers can play in setting up children for success in adulthood. You will laugh as you learn from these two master teachers who are rarely available to speak together. This is a unique occasion to be inspired by two women who have impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and adults with ASD.Thursday, August 16th & Friday, August 17th Click here for more information\ call the ACT office at 604-205-5467 or toll-free at 1-866-939-5188

Healing our Children / Healing Ourselves. A one-week program on beautiful Shuswap Lake July 1-7, 2012 Sorrento Centre Retreat and Conference Centre, Sorrento, BC
Come with your family and prepare to be nourished!
Instructor and Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Kate Hutchinson, works nationally and internationally with families with special needs children, helping them to optimize the health and development of their children, and themselves, using nutrition. If you've ever wondered if food could make a significant difference, this is the program for you. This course is for anyone who desires to positively impact the health (physical, mental, and emotional), of a child or a family member through food, drink and other natural therapies. Using wisdom from the past, rather than the latest trends, this course will surprise you, inspire you, and give you faith that positive change is possible and within your grasp. Participants will gain the information they need to make informed choices around food for children with special needs. Kate will reveal how foods can challenge or support mood, brain function, digestion, the nervous system, the immune system, and physical development.
Over the five days, we will create an individualized plan for your child so that you can implement dietary change immediately upon returning home. Common conditions that often accompany our special needs children's diagnosis, such as asthma, allergies, eczema, food intolerance, picky eating, sensory issues, constipation, diarrhea/loose stools, and other digestive issues will all be addressed. contact Whole Family Nutrition (604) 708-8205 Click here for our website
