Study in Autism and Family Functioning Looking for Volunteer Families
I am student in a program for family systems therapy and I am doing a study of how autism affects families. Participation will involve two one-hour sessions with a registered clinical counsellor. All information obtained will remain anonymous. WORKSHOPS: Parenting the Anxious Child: Do you feel like your child is showing some signs of fear or worry that affect his or her daily life? If you answer yes to this question, your child may be suffering from anxiety and there are things you can do to help. This 3 session workshop for parents and caregivers of children ages 3 to 12 will address the biological, psychological and social aspects of anxiety with proven strategies to help your anxious child.

Autism - Autism & the road to truth. Some things happen that you expect. You know what to do with them. You know how to handle the situation. Some things happen that you don't expect but you deal with the situation anyway. Some things in life creep up on you, growing in abundance little by little, not at all expected, and come as a huge blow. I didn't know this is how I felt about my son's Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, until half a year after he was diagnosed. ADD/ADHD - More Than Just Mom. I'm the mother of a child with ADHD, but that's not my entire identity. Time to stop neglecting the passions that make me who I am. I don't like looking in the mirror these days. It's not that my reflection is shocking. I've grown used to the gray hair and the 25 pounds I've gained since having children. The problem is, I have a hard time recognizing the person staring back at me. I trudge along under the armor I've molded around my likeness. I first strapped it on as a defense, to hide from the judgment of teachers and parents when my son, Luke, began having problems in school. Then it thickened, to protect me from the guilt of not being able to fix him. It grew heavier when I decided I'd have to force the world to accept my child, since I cannot change his neurology. If your child struggles in school because of her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), homeschooling can be a great alternative to help her succeed in math, reading, writing, and more! The traditional approach to learning -- a teacher standing in front of children sitting behind desks -- is not the most productive for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) children who get bored easily. If your child is demoralized by his poor grades, receives detention for forgetting books, is looked down upon by teachers, or is bullied by classmates, he may be a candidate for homeschooling. Down Syndrome
- Registration for the Down Syndrome Research Foundation Summer School program for students with Down syndrome age 13 and up opened Friday May 18th. There are only 15 spots available so register early.
Summer School 2012 has been redesigned to include a stronger emphasis on communication, as well as an individualized approach to reading and mathematics. The program will be led by both an experienced instructor and a BC-certified teacher with assistance provided by university summer school interns and volunteers. A speech therapist will hold a language group each Friday afternoon and the program will also feature specialized instructors for art, drama, and a high energy dance program. Small group academics take place in the morning in rotating groups for reading and math.
The program will be held at the DSRF Centre for Specialized Learning at 1409 Sperling Avenue in Burnaby Monday to Friday from 8:45 to 3:00 for two week sessions on the following dates:
July 16th to July 27th
July 30th to August 10th
August 13th to August 24th
You can register for one of the two-week sessions or all three blocks. The cost is $400 for each 2-week session and fees are payable upon registration by credit card or cheque.

A night when they all come together without parents and just party like there is no tomorrow...that is what this night is all about....to see all the pretty dresses and all the handsome suits......to dine and dance with no one there guiding them......to be themselves and be accepted....that is what this is all about.....that is why we put on this gala....and that is why we are reaching out to you again and asking for your support. We again like last year, have a goal to give away as many iPads as we can...last year we were able to give 16 very lucky guests a brand new iPad....if I could bottle the explosion of joy that erupted once we unvieled the iPads, you would know why we have decided to do this gift again!! I could send out to all of you testimonials from all the parents, about what this night means to their son or daughter, but I know I don't have too, for you can only imagine a night filled with dancing, hugging and friends cheering on friends as their names were called up to collect their i Pads.....the amount of love that fills this ball room is something that you just cannot put down in words. For our gala, we are asking for donations towards this amazing gift, we are looking for someone to come on board and be our DJ for the night and we are also taking any gifts to be door prizes. FASD - Video game helps students with fetal alcohol disorder. EDMONTON - Playing video games isn't often seen as the healthiest pastime for young people, but a new educational game is helping re-train the brains of students with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), a University of Alberta professor says. Jacqueline Pei, a registered psychologist who specializes in FASD, is looking into how a computer program called Caribbean Quest can improve the cognitive function of people with the condition. - Translating the world for a person with fetal alcohol syndrome. In an abstract world a brain that thinks concretely may need help with interpretation and by having a cognitive translator our daughter can avoid mistakes and frustration in professional meetings in finance, social welfare, medical, and the judicial process. When needed she enlists me as her cognitive translator and I attend the appointment or meeting to make sure the communication between the professional and my daughter is understood. A One-Day Workshop on Fostering Constructive Dialogue in Adversarial Situations

Families often feel frustrated and powerless when negotiating for services and supports. Faced with resistance or refusal most of us become increasingly coercive and find ourselves attempting to "work on" people rather than work with them.
Drawing on the fields of conflict management, hostage negotiation, and mediation Emma and Norman discuss how "identity" and "social narratives" play a significant role in defining and shaping the conflicts we have with others. They help participants expand their repertoire of responses to opposition and resistance so that they can side-step many of the power struggles which often derail conversations between parents and professionals. Participants learn ways of negotiating contentious issues so that they are better able maintain respectful relationships and foster constructive dialogue without compromising their own views.

Cool Communicators Camps 2012: Easter Seals and SET-BC! The BC Easter Seals Camping Program and Special Education Technology - British Columbia (SET- BC) are pleased to announce integrated camps for communication device users again this summer. Camps will be offered at Shawnigan (Vancouver Island), Squamish (West Coast) and Winfield (Okanagan). These overnight camp programs will be held Saturday June 30th through Friday July 6th. *Early registration is strongly recommended. Limited space is available, particularly for those requiring Personal Support Workers.
The program: Cool Communicators' Camps have a unique focus on using augmentative communication and technology skills in a recreational camp atmosphere. Campers will have a chance to connect with old and new friends, learn and practise communication strategies using speech generating devices, and enjoy activities from arts and crafts to outdoor pursuits and games.
The staff: Camp staff will provide a full program of recreational activities, as well as 24-hour care and supervision for the campers. SET-BC will coordinate a Speech Language Pathologist Support Team to target communication strategies and support the campers' communication in all camp events.
Who should attend Cool Communicators? This camp is designed for campers who:
- have augmentative communication needs and use voice output communication aids
- have an interest in using their communication technology to interact with peers
- have significant communication challenges but who do not yet have technology

- EASTER SEALS FAMILY CAMP. We are now only 10 day away from Family Camp! It will be held again at Camp Squamish from March 16th to 18th. We still have a few spots left so if you or anyone you know is interested in a great family weekend please check out our website and fill out an application HERE. Family Camp is a great way for families to connect with other families, for our campers to connect with each other and for the whole family to see a small piece of what we do in the summers. We will be doing tie-dye, swimming, climbing wall, big swing, giant jenga and many more super fun activities. The weekend will run from around 4:00pm on Friday until about 11:00am on Sunday.

Other - 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games to be held in Langley! We are pleased to announce that the 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games will be held in the Township of Langley from July 11 to 14, 2013, with the support of the Township and the Langley School District. The Games will feature more than 1,100 Special Olympics athletes from the eight SOBC regions and the Yukon competing in 11 summer sports: 5- and 10-pin bowling, aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, rhythmic gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer and softball. Athletes will show their love of sport and their inspiring sportsmanship as they compete for the opportunity to advance to the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, which will be held in Vancouver.
