- DSM-5 Debate: Committee Backs Off Some Changes, Re-Opens Comment. The committee responsible for revising the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - psychiatry's diagnostic "bible" commonly referred to as the DSM - has dropped the inclusion of two controversial new diagnoses that it had previously proposed, and re-opened its website for public comment on other potential revisions. iPad gives voice to kids with autism. CNN) -- Sharia stood immobile in front of the television, transfixed by its images, unaware of the world around her. Her family called her name over and over again, but she did not respond. It was that moment when they knew something was wrong. Initially, they thought it was a hearing problem. When they found nothing wrong, theydecided to take 2-year-old Sharia to a specialist at an early detection center in 2009. "Within five minutes of looking at Sharia, (the specialist) said that she has autism," said Sharia's father, Fawad Siddiqui. "A very clear case of it." Click here to read more
- Wellington teen with epilepsy, Asperger's on a mission to become surgeon. A dual diagnosis of epilepsy and Asperger's syndrome hasn't stopped 18-year-old John Hanes from dreaming big dreams (orthopedic surgeon) or traveling around the world (Cambodia) to pursue them. The Wellington resident, who graduates from Lake Worth High School's medical magnet program this month, interned at a Cambodian HOPE hospital last summer, where a staff surgeon allowed him to help suture an appendectomy patient. "That would never happen in this country," Hanes said. Click here to read more
- Schoolyard Designed For Children With Autism. "My main goal was to provide different opportunities for children with autism to be able to interact in their environment without being segregated from the rest of the school," King said. "I didn't want that separation to occur." Click here to read more
- Social motivation, reward and the roots of autism. Diminished social interest is one of the earliest and most persistent symptoms of autism. Children with the disorder scan social scenes in an atypical manner and pay greater attention to objects and less attention to people compared with typically developing children1,2. They also rarely respond to others' bids for joint attention - attempts to enlist the attention of a child, by pointing at an object, for example3- and are less interested in sharing enjoyment and in initiating or taking part in collaborative activities than are their typically developing peers4. Potty Training Tips for An Autistic Child. Toilet training a child is sometimes difficult to do even in the best situations. But add on top of that challenges such as autism, and parents can be overwhelmed by the task. Obviously, becoming independent with bathroom habits is critical as the child becomes older. With all the skills and resources parents have at their disposal, the most important for toilet training is patience. Click here to read more
- Autism & ability. Success in anything doesn't just happen. For children with autism, learning new skills is often made more difficult because of sensory processing issues. There may be too much noise in the next room for Jill to concentrate on the directions, or Marcos may not be able to look at numbers on a computer screen and relate them to those on a page of homework. It all has to do with contingencies. Click here to read more

ADD/ADHD - Double Whammy: Mothers and Children with ADHD. Moms and kids who share a diagnosis of attention deficit can be, in some ways, a perfect mismatch. But they're also uniquely equipped to understand and celebrate each other. When my son was first diagnosed with ADHD, at age nine, we attended nine months of weekly workshops for parents and kids at the University of California, San Francisco. The kids went to one room, where they learned how to organize their backpacks, and the parents went to another, where we learned how to manage reward charts. It was here, at age 48, that I got my first strong hint that I shared my son's disorder. While all the other parents brought in neatly lined, color-coded, computer-generated charts, and bragged about all the successes they were having, my hand-written graphs were crumpled, and my son's behavior was unchanged or worse. - 12 Parenting Strategies That Work for ADD Kids. A dozen ways to be a better parent to your ADD child. Most parents are good parents. But if your son or daughter has attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD), "good" may not be enough. To ensure that your child is happy and well-adjusted now and in the future-and to create a tranquil home environment-you've got to be a great parent. Fortunately, it's easier than you might imagine to go from good to great. All it takes is a few small adjustments in your parenting skills and the way you interact with your child. Here's what works, and why: click here to read more

- On June 15th at the Century Plaza Hotel our gala will be starting....a night filled with so much laughter and not a care in the world....this is "A Night to Remember 2...Magical Memories" A Gala for 160 young adults (ages 16-35)all living with special needs. A night when they all come together without parents and just party like there is no tomorrow...that is what this night is all about....to see all the pretty dresses and all the handsome suits......to dine and dance with no one there guiding them......to be themselves and be accepted....that is what this is all about.....that is why we put on this gala....and that is why we are reaching out to you again and asking for your support. We again like last year, have a goal to give away as many iPads as we can...last year we were able to give 16 very lucky guests a brand new iPad....if I could bottle the explosion of joy that erupted once we unvieled the iPads, you would know why we have decided to do this gift again!! I could send out to all of you testimonials from all the parents, about what this night means to their son or daughter, but I know I don't have too, for you can only imagine a night filled with dancing, hugging and friends cheering on friends as their names were called up to collect their i Pads.....the amount of love that fills this ball room is something that you just cannot put down in words. For our gala, we are asking for donations towards this amazing gift, we are looking for someone to come on board and be our DJ for the night and we are also taking any gifts to be door prizes. Just like last year, the Down Syndrome Research Foundation will issue you a tax reciept for your donation. Speaking on behalf of Gary and myself, our two kids, Sadie and Lucas attend this event, and to them it's an amazing party and a chance to get so dressed up and just blend in with all the others, but for Gary and myself, as we watch Lucas be the MC and Sadie dance with all of her friends,it is priceless to us.......this is their night to shine along with all the others there.......please come on board with all of us and make this another year of memories for our kids to have forever....thank you from the bottom of my heart.......Abbe Gates

FASD - Canada's only SOS Children's Village provides a stable home to B.C. kids.
School's out. Two little girls with books tucked ter under their arms chat away happily as they go up the front steps of their house. The five-bedroom house looks little different from others that are built or being built along a quiet street in this Surrey neighbourhood - until you go to the back yard. It's nearly two acres shared with four neighbouring houses. There's a basketball court, playground equipment and a massive lawn backing onto a forest. There's a separate building with a kitchen, living room, music room with drums, guitars and other instruments and a room for art. This is SOS Children's Village. It's unique in Canada and one of only five in North America.Click here to read more

A One-Day Workshop on Fostering Constructive Dialogue in Adversarial Situations
WHEN: Saturday May 26, 9:00-3:30, WHERE: FSI offices - 227 6th Street, New Westminster, B.C.
Families often feel frustrated and powerless when negotiating for services and supports. Faced with resistance or refusal most of us become increasingly coercive and find ourselves attempting to "work on" people rather than work with them.
Drawing on the fields of conflict management, hostage negotiation, and mediation Emma and Norman discuss how "identity" and "social narratives" play a significant role in defining and shaping the conflicts we have with others. They help participants expand their repertoire of responses to opposition and resistance so that they can side-step many of the power struggles which often derail conversations between parents and professionals. Participants learn ways of negotiating contentious issues so that they are better able maintain respectful relationships and foster constructive dialogue without compromising their own views.

STEP AHEAD: Is Your Child Having Trouble Making and Keeping Friends? Friendships are important in helping children develop emotionally and socially. In interacting with friends, children learn important social skills, such as how to communicate, cooperate, and solve problems.
Some children, however, have difficulty forming friendships.
The solution is simple: Teach your children specific social skills they need to connect with their peers. As a parent, you are the best person to help your child solve friendship problems by expanding their peer network and working together to promote successful get-togethers.
