Autism
- DSM V Controversy
- Doctor: Why we're making changes to autism diagnosis. My e-mail invitation to be a part of the DSM-5 revision process came on January 4, 2007. At the time, I was told that the work would be completed in 2011 and that participation would not be too burdensome. The process could be accomplished primarily through e-mails and conference calls, with in-person meetings held sparingly. It's interesting to reflect on the fact that when the ink was drying on the last version of the DSM in 1994, e-mail and the Internet as we know it were still evolving. Click here to read more
- Clues To Autism's Gender Bias. Autism is four times more common among males than females, and researchers are getting closer to figuring out why. "I think the key to actually developing a treatment for autism is to understand the difference between males and females, why female prevalence is much lower," said Stephen Scherer from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Study in Autism and Family Functioning Looking for Volunteer Families
I am student in a program for family systems therapy and I am doing a study of how autism affects families. Participation will involve two one-hour sessions with a registered clinical counsellor. All information obtained will remain anonymous. This research is being done for the requirements of a clinical internship in family systems therapy through Living Systems Counselling program in North Vancouver (www.livingsystems.ca). Please contact Yvonne McKenna at EMAIL HERE or phone (778) 554-8050
- Autistic Child Defended in Café. When a man criticizes a family with an autistic child, bystanders step in. Click here to see the video Thanks Kelly!
- Autism's top model. She'll tell you it was no problem at all and whether she believes it or not, Heather Kuzmich's diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome at the age of 12 contributed to what was a surprisingly large fan base, during the 2008 season of America's Next Top Model. She was the oddball, the loner, the contestant that from day one of the competition was different from everyone else. Click here to read more
- The Many Faces of THOMAS. For many children with autism and other Autism Spectrum Disorders, Thomas the Tank Engine serves as a gateway into the world of understanding emotions. in a 2002 study by the National Autistic Society in the UK, researchers found that some children were able to make significant leaps in emotional development that were previously unimaginable. - We are "Therapy in a Bin", we started this company in 2009 shortly after our first child was diagnosed with autism (we now have two boys with the diagnosis). We have been serving the families and professionals in the province for the past two years and have finally decided it was time to really step up our game. We have created a brand new website that features over 400 products! We worked very hard to make this website a soft place to land for parents and an excellent resource for professionals to find the products they need.
We are local and have excellent pricing and turn around plus of equal importance we accept "Request to Pays" for Autism Funding Unit. We can help families navigate the system at no cost to them. We offer products for all needs whether it be a diagnosis of autism, adhd, anxiety, sensory/auditory processing or specialty needs for fine motor, gross motor, sensory development etc... We also make our own Therapy/Learning Bins which are very popular. We are also an excellent resource for typically developing children as well. Please check out our new website HERE!
- The 'swamp' of autism: a challenged marriage and a child without a voice.
"I joked that the only thing I'd ever thought about writing is a suicide note."
Arthur Fleischmann offers a little laugh as he says this. He's talking about his decision to write a memoir, Carly's Voice: Breaking Through Autism, with his 17-year-old, non-speaking autistic daughter. After ABC did a story about the life-altering breakthrough Carly had at the age of 10 - when she typed out the words "help teeth hurt" on a computer - publishers approached him to write the story. ADD/ADHD - The Power of Praise: Positive Reinforcement for ADHD Children. How a parent's words of praise can help combat the fear and self-doubt that plague many children with ADD. When a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) receives a drop or two of praise, it's like rain in the desert. He drinks it in, revels in it. It's important for parents, teachers, and coaches to set up an ADHD child to do something right, something well, something praiseworthy. Giving your ADHD child words of praise is like offering him a ticket out of the fear and self-doubt that plague him. Click here to read more
- Building Confidence in Children with ADD Teach your child to build greater self-esteem with this exercise. You can generate positive reasons for your child's behavior if you look for them. With a better understanding of how she thinks, it'll be easier for you to help her deal with the challenges in her life. For the following exercise, write the sentence stems on a piece of lined paper and ask your child to finish them. Click here to see the exercise

- On June 15th at the Century Plaza Hotel our gala will be starting....a night filled with so much laughter and not a care in the world....this is "A Night to Remember 2...Magical Memories" A Gala for 160 young adults (ages 16-35)all living with special needs. A night when they all come together without parents and just party like there is no tomorrow...that is what this night is all about....to see all the pretty dresses and all the handsome suits......to dine and dance with no one there guiding them......to be themselves and be accepted....that is what this is all about.....that is why we put on this gala....and that is why we are reaching out to you again and asking for your support. We again like last year, have a goal to give away as many iPads as we can...last year we were able to give 16 very lucky guests a brand new iPad....if I could bottle the explosion of joy that erupted once we unvieled the iPads, you would know why we have decided to do this gift again!! I could send out to all of you testimonials from all the parents, about what this night means to their son or daughter, but I know I don't have too, for you can only imagine a night filled with dancing, hugging and friends cheering on friends as their names were called up to collect their i Pads.....the amount of love that fills this ball room is something that you just cannot put down in words. For our gala, we are asking for donations towards this amazing gift, we are looking for someone to come on board and be our DJ for the night and we are also taking any gifts to be door prizes. Just like last year, the Down Syndrome Research Foundation will issue you a tax reciept for your donation. Speaking on behalf of Gary and myself, our two kids, Sadie and Lucas attend this event, and to them it's an amazing party and a chance to get so dressed up and just blend in with all the others, but for Gary and myself, as we watch Lucas be the MC and Sadie dance with all of her friends,it is priceless to us.......this is their night to shine along with all the others there.......please come on board with all of us and make this another year of memories for our kids to have forever....thank you from the bottom of my heart.......Abbe Gates
To make a donation please call Hina at the Down Syndrome Research Fondation...604-444-3773 -

FASD - Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. FASD is an often-misdiagnosed brain-based disorder. It has been two years since a Tennessee mom sent her 7-year-old adopted son back to Russia with a note that read: "I no longer wish to parent this child." While no definitive diagnosis ever was made public, the boy was thought to suffer from fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Click here to read more
- Fifth National Biennial Conference on Adolescents and Adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: It's a Matter of Justice. This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.
- Langley - FASD adoptive and foster parents. Monthly support group meetings for those with children who have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Info: Jamie, 604-530-5917.

"Moving Beyond IQ in Defining and Diagnosing Intellectual Disability: Service Eligibility Inequities for People with Brain-Based Disorders" Dr. Stephan Greenspan
New knowledge about the cognitive and other functional deficits of people with neuro-developmental disorders, such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, provides additional evidence for the need to reduce the role of IQ cut-offs in determining eligibility for services, supports and protections. Unfortunately, the same "scientistic" (quasi-scientific reliance on numbers) that underlay the reliance on IQ score has been responsible for a similar overemphasis on adaptive behavior cutting scores. In this talk, Professor Greenspan reviews the history of ID definitions, the need for a rethinking of the relationship between IQ and adaptive behavior, and the efforts that need to be made to develop eligibility criteria that capture the support needs of children and adults who have brain-based "common sense deficit disorders" characterized by an inability to recognize and avoid social and physical risk.

Reflexes are the fundamental neurological building blocks for our developmental processes and learning. They are crucial for proper brain functioning, and intellectual processes as we mature. Integration of these movement patterns and reflexes results in physical, emotional, social and cognitive improvements and a more joyful life. Reflex integration methods involve natural, non-invasive movements that can be easily learned by parents and professionals. Integrating immature reflexes allows the body to access normal movement patterns and enables growth and progression to higher developmental levels. Since every individual possesses these natural programs, improvements can be achieved in even the most severe cases. Reflex integration work promotes development and maturation of the nervous system, reduces chronic pain, and can recover function after traumatic brain injury. Other - WORKBC EMPLOYMENT SERVICES! As of April 2, 2012, the Employment Program of BC will make it easier for people to find work and provide stability for their families through a wide range of integrated employment services and supports. The new program replaces four provincially funded employment programs and six programs funded under the Canada-BC Labour Market Development Agreement with an integrated approach for British Columbians needing services. The first step in accessing these services is to contact a WorkBC Employment Services Centre near you. All unemployed British Columbians who are eligible to work in B.C. can access services. Each WorkBC Employment Services Centre will ensure that everyone - including immigrants, youth, Aboriginal people, Francophones, persons with disabilities and people living in rural and remote areas - has access to the same supports and services no matter where they live in the province, so they can get back to work quickly.
