  • BLOG: From One Warrior Mother to Another.  Recently, two dear friends approached me with the news that each of their sons has received an ASD diagnosis. The sadness in their eyes, the unspoken fears of their hearts - I remember it all too well. As they
poured out their pain to me, I could taste it. I've been there - walked the road that they walk now - and the memories came flooding back. Click here to read more

  • DSM V Controversy
    • The changing spectrum of autism.  The DSM-5 and its plan to redefine mental illness. In May 2013, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) will release the fifth iteration of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), redefining the way psychiatrists diagnose their patients. The proposed changes to the diagnostic criteria for autism and its related disorders have drawn ire.  Click here to read more

  • Practical Approaches to Taking Care of Nails and Hair: Training Away Fear and Resistance.  Imagine having someone come at you with scissors to cut your nails or hair. Imagine someone turning on clippers to give you a buzz cut. Imagine the metal glint of the scissors and the menacing drone of those clippers. Now imagine how you would feel if you didn't know what was going to happen next.  You would be afraid. And you would want to leave. But what if people wouldn't let you? What if they held you down until the job was complete and then acted as if everything was okay?  Click here to read more
  • BLOG - Why teaching 'social skills' doesn't work in autism "And therein, for me, lies the crunch. We know that autism is classed as a developmental disorder. Surely the definition of a developmental disorder is that development is disordered?? If so, what would happen if we re-ordered it to facilitate the development of social understanding? It never ceases to amaze (and frustrate) me that our approach to supporting people with autism doesn't take account of the developmental steps that have been missed.Over the past couple of years, I've noticed that there has been much more emphasis on autism research that looks at developing joint attention in children with autism. That is definitely a good thing and a step in the right direction, but still misses out all the developmental steps that are the foundations for joint attention."  Check out the video showing two wee babes communicating! • GLOBAL NEWS 5 Things: World Autism Day. The disorder typically manifests itself during the first three years of a person's life, affecting the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Its severity is measured on a spectrum because it takes a variety of forms and the degrees of intensity in certain behaviours aren't consistent.  Here, Global News lists five things most Canadians don't know about autism. • Centre for Disease Control: New Data on Autism Spectrum Disorders. CDC estimates 1 in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Track your child's development and act early if you have a concern.  More children than ever before are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Like the many families living with ASDs, CDC considers ASDs an important public health concern. CDC is committed to continuing to provide essential data on ASDs, search for risk factors and causes, and develop resources that help identify children with ASDs as early as possible. • Autism rates now 1 in 88, some attribute to better testing.  One child out of 88 in the U.S. is believed to have autism or a related disorder, an increase in the rate attributed largely to wider screening.  Advocacy groups seized on the new number as further evidence that autism research and services should get more attention.  "Autism is now officially becoming an epidemic in the United States," said Mark Roithmayr, president of Autism Speaks, at a news conference where the new figures were released Thursday.  Click here to read more

  • Utah has nation's highest autism rate, CDC report says.  "I'm scared by the numbers," expert says of 78% rise in kids ID'd as having autism in U.S. from '02-'08. One out of 47 Utah children have been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder, the highest rate in the country, according to new data released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Click here to read more

  • One big mass of contradictions.  Revealing the faces behind Asperger's syndrome.  Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory is a memorable character. He has many personality quirks, which make for many laughs. But have you ever noticed that Sheldon displays many characteristics of a person with Asperger's syndrome? The show's producers have never confirmed this diagnosis. Perceptions of Asperger's and its portrayal in the media can be stereotypical or extreme, and can greatly differ from actual individuals' experiences with Asperger's. CLick here to read more

"Car crashes are the number one cause of death for teenagers, so it is important that we understand how HFASDs impact driving and how to develop appropriate educational and evaluation tools." Click here to read more

When our kids get older all of that goes away, during some of our hardest parenting years we have the fewest networks and support systems... and through this process our children are magically supposed to evolve from kids to adults. • Diagnosis Of ADHD On The Rise. The number of American children leaving doctors' offices with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis has risen 66 percent in 10 years, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study. Over this same timeframe, specialists, instead of primary care physicians, have begun treating an increasing number of these young patients, the study found.  Click here to read more
  • ADHD and ODD: Parenting Your Defiant Child. ADHD behavior issues often partner with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) -- making discipline a challenge. Every parent of a child with attention deficit disorder knows what it's like to deal with ADHD behavior problems -- sometimes a child lashes out or refuses to comply with even the most benign request. But about half of all parents who have children with live with severe behavior problems and discipline challenges on an almost daily basis. That's because 40 percent of children with ADHD also develop oppositional defiant disorder, a condition marked by chronic aggression, frequent outbursts, and a tendency to argue, ignore requests, and engage in intentionally annoying behavior.  How bad can it get?  DOWNS  Down Syndrome

  • On June 15th at the Century Plaza Hotel our gala will be starting....a night filled with so much laughter and not a care in the world....this is "A Night to Remember 2...Magical Memories" A Gala for 160 young adults (ages 16-35)all living with special needs. A night when they all come together without parents and just party like there is no tomorrow...that is what this night is all about....to see all the pretty dresses and all the handsome suits......to dine and dance with no one there guiding them......to be themselves and be accepted....that is what this is all about.....that is why we put on this gala....and that is why we are reaching out to you again and asking for your support. We again like last year, have a goal to give away as many iPads as we can...last year we were able to give 16 very lucky guests a brand new iPad....if I could bottle the explosion of joy that erupted once we unvieled the iPads, you would know why we have decided to do this gift again!! I could send out to all of you testimonials from all the parents, about what this night means to their son or daughter, but I know I don't have too, for you can only imagine a night filled with dancing, hugging and friends cheering on friends as their names were called up to collect their i Pads.....the amount of love that fills this ball room is something that you just cannot put down in words. For our gala, we are asking for donations towards this amazing gift, we are looking for someone to come on board and be our DJ for the night and we are also taking any gifts to be door prizes. Just like last year, the Down Syndrome Research Foundation will issue you a tax reciept for your donation. Speaking on behalf of Gary and myself, our  two kids, Sadie and Lucas attend this event, and to them it's an amazing party and a chance to get so dressed up and just blend in with all the others, but for Gary and myself, as we watch Lucas be the MC and Sadie dance with all of her friends,it is priceless to us.......this is their night to shine along with all the others there.......please come on board with all of us and make this another year of memories for our kids to have forever....thank you from the bottom of my heart.......Abbe Gates

    • For those who are considering our 2013 Down Syndrome Cruise Conference, we have booked some group space as an additional 5 night RELAXATION cruise on the same ship "Liberty of the Seas" leaving Fort Lauderdale on March 2nd to Cozumel and Belize City.  If this is of interest it may be possible to book the same stateroom on the second cruise, which means not having to pack and unpack again, if you book both cruises early enough.  There are a few of us planning to do this second relaxation cruise.  The total deposit on the second cruise is $200 US (versus $200 per person on the DS Cruise Conference).  If you wish further details, including pricing, please let me know.  We also have group space for an 8 night Eastern Caribbean cruise on a sister ship "Independence of the Seas" also leaving on March 2nd or a 7 night Eastern Caribbean Celebrity Cruise (Celebrity Silhouette) leaving on March 3rd, from Fort Lauderdale.  Thought we should mention these additional cruises as some of the families who are considering the DS Cruise Conference may feel that 5 nights is too short for a cruise, while others may also be travelling from quite a distance and wish to make their trip worthwhile.  Adding the additional cruise will also give you time to assimilate all the information that will be learned on our DS Cruise Conference.  Look forward to hearing from families soon.  Even if you just want pricing, please do not hesitate to contact me at  My email here

FASD

FASD

  • Best to tackle FASD at its roots.A guy I know overdosed on ecstasy a couple of weeks ago.  I had never thought about it until now, but although one typically swallows "E," he snorted it. It left him passed out and in horrific shape.  As I made the 911 call I thought he was going to die. He didn't, and after a brief fight with the paramedics and Saskatoon police, he was taken to the hospital.  He's a quiet guy who has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. I want to say he struggles with FASD, but the alcohol his mother consumed while pregnant with him changed his life forever even before he took his first breath. The conditions that led to the FASD contributed to a brutal childhood. CLick here to read more

  • Fifth National Biennial Conference on Adolescents and Adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: It's a Matter of Justice. This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

  • "Moving Beyond IQ in Defining and Diagnosing Intellectual Disability: Service Eligibility Inequities for People with Brain-Based Disorders" Dr. Stephan Greenspan

New knowledge about the cognitive and other functional deficits of people with neuro-developmental disorders, such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, provides additional evidence for the need to reduce the role of IQ cut-offs in determining eligibility for services, supports and protections. Unfortunately, the same "scientistic" (quasi-scientific reliance on numbers) that underlay the reliance on IQ score has been responsible for a similar overemphasis on adaptive behavior cutting scores. In this talk, Professor Greenspan reviews the history of ID definitions, the need for a rethinking of the relationship between IQ and adaptive behavior, and the efforts that need to be made to develop eligibility criteria that capture the support needs of children and adults who have brain-based "common sense deficit disorders" characterized by an inability to recognize and avoid social and physical risk.
