  • 'Mute' autistic man trapped in a world of silence stuns experts with his amazing singing voice
    • Kyle has only ever said a handful of words
    • His personality and emotion shine through in his singing, says mother

A man with autism that has rendered him almost mute is about to release an album after he was found to have perfect pitch and an amazing singing voice.

Kyle Coleman, 25, from Gwithian, Cornwall, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three and has only ever been able to say a few words.  Click here to read more and hear him sing!

  • "Loving Lampposts," A Groundbreaking Documentary About Autism, Love, and Acceptance.  It didn't take long for Todd and Erika Drezner - a documentary filmmaker and a high-school English teacher who live in Brooklyn - to realize that their bright, blond, cherubically handsome son Sam is not a typical kid.  When he was still a baby, Sam would take the letters from his favorite alphabet puzzle and line them up in a certain order.  This sequence wasn't alphabetical, but it was clearly important to Sam; he had the series memorized, and could recite it from memory. When he felt stressed out - like on the first day of going to a new school - he might spend hours muttering the sequence to himself, like a soothing incantation.  Click here to read more
  • Facing autism's hard questions.  When you have a child with autism, you try not to dwell on a couple of heart-wrenching topics. But there is no place to hide when your child brings them up on his own.  My son Clay, who is 16, doesn't communicate through speech, but over the past two years, he has been learning to type with support. It has been a revelation. His typing has confirmed that he can read and do math, and it has released his silly sense of humor. It has also allowed him to request the garlic naan when we get takeout from our favorite Indian restaurant, and to suggest that we rescue a puppy-mill golden retriever last Christmas - the only gift he wanted.  Click here to read more

  • Shark eyes & autism. There were signs the depression was going to hit again, and I ignored them. It's been at least five years since I've been in a state of severe depression. An incident that happened a couple of weeks before Christmas 2011 seemed to signal the start of the patch of depression I find myself in currently, and it also points to one of the causes of my depression. My brother has autism, and being his sister has not always been easy.  Click here to read more

ADD

ADD/ADHD

  • Rescued From the Mainstream.  Schools wouldn't give my son a chance.  I'm a little bit late to pick up my son, T.K., at school, so he's sitting in study hall finishing his math homework. On my way in, I see his geography teacher - the only one whose patience has not yet worn horribly thin. "How's my boy doing?" I ask, in the most robustly positive tone I can muster.  "Don't ask any questions you don't want the answer to," she says, head down as she hurries past me toward the door. I know in an instant that my last ally is lost.  Click here to read more
  • ADHD and the Relative Age Effect.  Diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in young children is becoming more and more common these days. But, did you know, children born in certain months of the year have a greater risk of being diagnosed, and subsequently treated, than those born in others? The question is, which birth months result in a greater risk level, and why?  Click here to read more

    • For those who are considering our 2013 Down Syndrome Cruise Conference, we have booked some group space as an additional 5 night RELAXATION cruise on the same ship "Liberty of the Seas" leaving Fort Lauderdale on March 2nd to Cozumel and Belize City.  If this is of interest it may be possible to book the same stateroom on the second cruise, which means not having to pack and unpack again, if you book both cruises early enough.  There are a few of us planning to do this second relaxation cruise.  The total deposit on the second cruise is $200 US (versus $200 per person on the DS Cruise Conference).  If you wish further details, including pricing, please let me know.  We also have group space for an 8 night Eastern Caribbean cruise on a sister ship "Independence of the Seas" also leaving on March 2nd or a 7 night Eastern Caribbean Celebrity Cruise (Celebrity Silhouette) leaving on March 3rd, from Fort Lauderdale.  Thought we should mention these additional cruises as some of the families who are considering the DS Cruise Conference may feel that 5 nights is too short for a cruise, while others may also be travelling from quite a distance and wish to make their trip worthwhile.  Adding the additional cruise will also give you time to assimilate all the information that will be learned on our DS Cruise Conference.  Look forward to hearing from families soon.  Even if you just want pricing, please do not hesitate to contact me at  My email here

This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

  • 7 Things You Don't Know About A Special Needs Parent.  Raising a child with any disorder, condition or special need, is both a blessing and a challenge. A challenge for the obvious reasons, and a blessing because you don't know the depths of victory and joy until you see your child overcoming some of those challenges (sometimes while smiling like a goofy bear). Chances are that you know a special needs parent, or you may be one yourself. As a special needs parent, I often don't share my feelings on this aspect of my life, even with my closest friends, so I decided to compile a list here with the goal of building understanding (I was largely inspired by this beautiful post, authored by another parent to a child with a chromosomal disorder). I don't claim to speak for every special needs parent out there, but from the ones I know, some of these are pretty universal. If I've missed any, please leave a comment below.  Click here to read more
  • There Is No Getting Past It: What Can a Teenager Do About Regrettable Sexts? When Ben asked Jenna to send him pictures, she did. It started with her chest, clothed, then unclothed. Then her entire body, first in bra and underwear, then nude. She examined the final one before she sent it off - a body with a head cut off, like a mannequin, like a doll. A body that could be anyone's. A sinking feeling started in her stomach, but she sent it anyway.  Click here to read more
