  • Autism rescue: Firefighter teaches how to help autistic people in emergencies.

As an experienced firefighter and a devoted father to an autistic son, Bill Cannata is combining the two worlds he knows so well to help protect others.  Being in a fire can be confusing and overwhelming -- especially for someone with autism, says Cannata, a fire captain in Westwood, Mass. And autistic people may react in a way that seems combative to emergency first responders. His mission: teaching first responders around the country how to identify someone with autism and how best to help them in an emergency, when every second counts.  Click here to read more

  •  How can I help my autistic teen feel "cool"? How can I help my autistic teen feel like he's cool? At age 16, my son with Asperger Syndrome is trying to develop a 'cool' persona, but he is not very adept. If he could just learn small talk, he would be miles ahead of where he is now. Please help me find some way to help him. Click here to read more
  •  Insistence on Sameness: How do people with autism handle change. One of the classic signs of autism is Insistence on Sameness. That can be manifest in a variety of ways. One of the classics is lining up toys in a certain order. Sometimes it means following rules or routines to the point of obsession. Sometimes, in those situations, even accidentally making a change in daily routines, like bathing or driving to school, can be met with a strong behavioral response or tantrums or more.  Click here to read more from Linda Hodgdon
  • Learning disorder no barrier in pursuit of dream.  A doctor once told my mom I should be put in an institution."If Matthew was your child, what would you do?" my mom asked the doctor.  "Personally, if he was my child, I'd put him in an institution because I don't see any improvements with him and he would not be easy to handle," the doctor replied."I'm sorry but you're not God. He's not even two years old and you have no idea what my son will be able to accomplish," my mom said and walked away.  Click here to read more
  •  Why people with Aspergers seem so awkward around others.  Non-autistic people or neurotypicals see safety in numbers. We see threat. Unless we are shipwrecked and have been floating at sea in a dinghy for four days with no food we don't see safety in other people. They stimulate the amygdala in our brains, causing adrenalin overload and a fight or flight reaction. So we may feel testy, want to flee, or, because we've trained ourselves to do neither, we simply become awkward--stiff, jerky, even suffer from a temporary inability to speak. • Attention! Teens (and Moms) are Abusing ADHD Drugs.  Marijuana, methamphetamines, cocaine, heroin - we've always known these to be the drugs of choice for thugs and addicts, and we've always warned our kids to stay away. But according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, a new drug of choice for many teens and adults can be found in our very own medicine cabinets. More and more stressed-out students and parents are abusing the drug Adderall - in both brand-name and generic form - to make it through their busy days.  Click here to read more from KIDPROOF!
  • Immaturity May Lead To Misdiagnosis Of ADHD.  The youngest children in the classroom are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) - and prescribed medication - than their peers in the same grade, according to a study just published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).  Click here to read more

    • For those who are considering our 2013 Down Syndrome Cruise Conference, we have booked some group space as an additional 5 night RELAXATION cruise on the same ship "Liberty of the Seas" leaving Fort Lauderdale on March 2nd to Cozumel and Belize City.  If this is of interest it may be possible to book the same stateroom on the second cruise, which means not having to pack and unpack again, if you book both cruises early enough.  There are a few of us planning to do this second relaxation cruise.  The total deposit on the second cruise is $200 US (versus $200 per person on the DS Cruise Conference).  If you wish further details, including pricing, please let me know.  We also have group space for an 8 night Eastern Caribbean cruise on a sister ship "Independence of the Seas" also leaving on March 2nd or a 7 night Eastern Caribbean Celebrity Cruise (Celebrity Silhouette) leaving on March 3rd, from Fort Lauderdale.  Thought we should mention these additional cruises as some of the families who are considering the DS Cruise Conference may feel that 5 nights is too short for a cruise, while others may also be travelling from quite a distance and wish to make their trip worthwhile.  Adding the additional cruise will also give you time to assimilate all the information that will be learned on our DS Cruise Conference.  Look forward to hearing from families soon.  Even if you just want pricing, please do not hesitate to contact me at  My email here

FASD

FASD

  • Fifth National Biennial Conference on Adolescents and Adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: It's a Matter of Justice. This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.
  • Langley - FASD adoptive and foster parents. Monthly support group meetings for those with children who have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Info: Jamie, 604-530-5917.

  • STEPS Forward is a family-driven organization founded to ensure that people with developmental disabilities are included as students in the academic and social life of colleges and universities of British Columbia. The work of STEPS Forward is rooted in the belief that inclusive post-secondary education is a pivotal element of a fully inclusive life. For this reason, STEPS Forward works to create a typical university or college experience, with course work running from September through April, and a co-op employment term from May through August, over the course of approximately 4-5 years. For the same reason, STEPS Forward works with individuals, families and systems, not only throughout a college or university experience, but also, before and after that time.    Click here for more information
