Asperger's is one of the autism spectrum disorders that affects a person's ability to socialize, and that's what was happening to Jack at school. The 11-year-old was being "isolated and picked on," in the words of his friend Spencer Kusel. Click here to read more

  • Burnaby NewsLeader: Burnaby's Monarch House is a One Stop Shop for Children with Autism.  Jacobs tried to have her son assessed but their doctors in New Zealand, where they were living at the time, told her not to worry, that it was just a developmental delay and that they should treat the acid reflux first. A couple years ago, the family returned home to B.C., settling in North Vancouver. Faced with a six-month waitlist to get Oliver diagnosed in the public health system, and knowing early intervention is crucial, Jacobs chose Monarch House Autism Centre in Burnaby.  Click here to read more

There was a method to her madness, and that method was something she decided to record and distribute for other parents to use as guidelines in helping their children achieve success as well.  Click here to read more

This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

  • Don't Forget About Me....Being a Special Needs Sibling.  I had an amazing team of friends who offered to run the event.  But I had to go.  My friend asked, "What are you doing here? Go home. Take care of Brady. Get some rest-anything." But I looked over at my daughter, smiling from ear-to-ear because I had arrived and I knew there was only one place in the whole world I needed to be.  I came because it was important to my daughter.  I came because my daughter gives up so much and gives so much to her brother or because of her brother-that I knew, that making sure she knew how truly important she is in my life-was the only thing that mattered that evening.Click here to read more

Dr. Gordon Neufeld has thoughts about early childhood education that may come as an unwelcome surprise to parents of preschoolers and education policy-makers.  Neufeld is against four-year-old kindergarten. He's also against five year-old kindergarten. And possibly even six-year-old kindergarten. Unless, of course, kindergarten is all about play and not at all about results.  Click here to read more
