Autism
- Brain Scans Can Detect Autism as Early as 6 Months.
New research provides evidence that wiring in the brains of children with autism differs from typically developing children as early as six months of age, according to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry on Friday. "This is the earliest study of brain development using neuro-imaging," says Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D. "By six months of age, even before the symptoms [of autism] emerge, the brain networks that connect different brain regions do not develop correctly." - Video: Group homes for adults with autism AutismHangout. Independent living for our special needs sons and daughters can be a reality! It may be hard to imagine when they're small, but maturity brings changes... many of them good! And their desire to live an independent life can emerge. It has with our son, Nolan. And we've found a most rewarding opportunity for his dream. Meet Chris. Chris is the owner/operator of the group home where Nolan now lives. There was a process to find this home, and there are hurdles to jump. But the best news is, our special kids have opportunities to live independent lives. There are good people out there who care... and make that compassion their livelihood. Click here to read more and see the video!
- Let me tell you a little about celebrating autism. When I tell the average person that my son has Autism, they feel really bad for me. The fact is that there is a lot to celebrate.
Milestones are an achievement, not just an item on a list. When you have a child with Autism, you learn to appreciate the milestones, both big and small. Some would say that we celebrate a little too much for such little accomplishments but I'd argue that we celebrate accordingly, it's other parents who take them for granted. First words, learning to walk, swimming, riding a bike, reading, writing... all these things that make parents proud are far more than just steps along the way when your child has Autism... they're cause for celebration. - Autism Awareness: To stim or not to stim, is it an option? We all do it. We have funny little ways that we settle our nerves or process the world around us. For many, like my son, taking in information can send him into overload. You see many children and adults with Autism Spectrum and Related Disabilities also often have Sensory Integration Disorders. This means the information they are receiving about their surroundings may not be accurate. Click here to read more

This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

Education - NYT: After Recess: Change the World. A BATTLE between a class of fourth graders and a major movie studio would seem an unequal fight. So it proved to be: the studio buckled. And therein lies a story of how new Internet tools are allowing very ordinary people to defeat some of the most powerful corporate and political interests around - by threatening the titans with the online equivalent of a tarring and feathering. - Limits on special-needs students are discriminatory: Minister Abbott says government is considering changing the law as early as this spring. The Liberal government is re-examining a law that limits the number of special-needs students in B.C. class-rooms because it is discriminatory, Education Minister George Abbott said Saturday. He made the comment after addressing a weekend meeting of the B.C. School Superintendents' Association, where he lauded a report from a Victoria parent group that also describes the restrictions as unfair and calls for them to be scrapped. Click here to read more
- New special-needs cash can't outweigh loss of teachers' bargaining rights. One of the good-news tidbits tossed out this week during a radio address by B.C. Premier Christy Clark was the promise to spend an extra $165-million for special-needs students in the classroom. There is a murky back story to that announcement. The footprints lead to the bog created 10 years ago when the B.C. Liberal government, with Ms. Clark serving as education minister, stripped teachers of the right to negotiate their working conditions. Click here to read more
