Reach News - WORKSHOP: Social Skills & the Hidden Curriculum
Each person will need to develop a base set of skills to interact appropriately with their peers. Saying please and thank you is just the beginning. This workshop aims to provide parents an understanding of the basics of social interactions as well as the Hidden Curriculum - the rules of social behaviour that often are acquired by feeling socially awkward. Often our children who think differently need to be taught about these hidden rules explicitly. Autism
- DSM V Controversy
- EBCALA Center on Fox News RE: DSM-5 Changes for Autism & Asperger's. A Yale School of Medicine researcher, Dr. Fred Volkmar, recently used the APA's new criteria for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders version five (DSM V) to find that only 45% of individuals who have an autism diagnosis today would retain that diagnosis. The New York Times reported extensively on this development last week. Click here to read more and see the video
- No More PDD - A Video Glimpse Post DSM-5? The DSMV has eliminated PDDnos and Aspergers from the future categories of social developmental disorders with important implications for children. Check out this video!
-
Dear concerned respondent to the DSM-5 Autism proposal:
Thank you for contacting the American Psychiatric Association with your thoughts about the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) proposed for DSM-5. We at APA have been and will continue to be advocates for a full range of services for people with autism and all other neurodevelopmental disorders. We understand the devastating impact that discontinuation of services can have on patients and families. We also recognize that services are determined not just by a diagnosis but also by the severity of symptoms and needs in areas such as education, social skills, activities of daily living, and maintaining personal safety. Even if an individual's diagnosis changes, this does not invalidate the treatments and other services that have worked for him/her, and these services should be continued based on need. - Fortugno: Don't panic about autism changes.
A recent report from a prominent researcher in developmental disorders has stoked fear and controversy among parents and educators by suggesting that some children currently diagnosed with autism-related disabilities may soon find themselves left out in the cold. The reality is more complex. Click here to read more
- My Autism and Me. In this Newsround Special, 13-year-old Rosie takes viewers into her world to explain what it's like to grow up with autism - a condition which affects how children see life, and the way they relate to others around them.
With the help of beautifully crafted animation, Rosie introduces other children who have the condition: Tony, who gets totally obsessed with things but struggles to make friends, Ben, who has suffered from terrible bullying, and Rosie's own little brother Lenny, who turns the house upside-down daily to try and make sense of things. Click here to see the video
- Temple Grandin cautions not to give up on autistic kids. When a young child is diagnosed as autistic, parents must move into high gear, Temple Grandin said in Chico Wednesday. "The worst thing you can do is nothing," she said. Grandin, who is autistic herself, is famous as an animal-behavior expert and as an advocate for people with autism.Click here to read more

- Membership Rewards: 10 Perks to Having a Child with Autism
by FlappinessIs. Since I tend to write someone dramatically and have been known to drag my soapbox around, it occurred to me that it is high time I write something happy. For not everything about autism is sad. Some of it is inspiring. Some of it is funny. And there are definitely good things about raising a child with autism. Sometimes we forget to tell others. And sometimes we forget to remind ourselves. :) 1. Folks tend to nominate you for sainthood. We, of course, know that it isn't us that are special. It's the child that makes you special. But glowing praise never hurt anybody. And, sometimes, a little pat on the back is what you really need. Click here to read more
- Treating the Common Cold and Flu: Special considerations for ADHD, ADD, and ASD. The "common cold" and the flu have become such a frequent part of our seasonal vocabulary that we rarely take the time to think about the best way to treat their symptoms. Evaluating treatment options is especially important in people with multiple sensitivities such as those who have symptoms of autism spectrum disorders, ADD, and ADHD. Click here to read more.
- Sleep Issues and Autism: How to get some rest. Parents of newborns often commiserate about sleep deprivation, later looking back with fond memories of those early sleep-deprived days when their infants awoke frequently for feedings during the night. But what if the sleepless nights were to continue year after year with no break in sight? This is exactly the scenario for many families impacted by autism. Click here to read more
- Autism & living on purpose. I never know when to stop saying Happy New Year. I strive to hold onto the feeling of renewal, hope and fresh starts that the New Year provides. But holidays quickly recede into the rear view mirror, since the business of living demands our full and present attention, until the next round of designated pre-programmed holiday landmarks sneak up on us. Of course we all endeavor to live as if every day were a holiday or the first day of the rest of our lives, but that eventually becomes exhausting- usually around mid-January. However, for those of us with special needs children or siblings, we consistently struggle with how to make the every day more meaningful and resonant for them. My brother, Phillip, is a severely autistic adult and lives in a group home administered by New Horizons. I feel a certain amount of self-imposed pressure to make each visit with my brother intently unique: for his wellbeing, his development, to bring some joy into his quiet little world. Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

Technology - From MOMS Hi there .... the list below is what I have so far for a Grade 12 student with HFA, with a focus on supporting the organizational skills required to survive in post-secondary. The list also centres on using the new iPhone 4S as a key organizational tool/virtual assistant (SIRI). I would welcome other suggestions to add to this: iPhone/computer apps: DropBox: Handy for storing/syncing files that the student can access from home or school, without having to worry about carrying around a memory stick and/or keeping track of which is the latest file version. Widely compatible with popular productivity apps and software. EverNote: I've set up a free account and created a "Notebook" (folder) to compile and organize notes and information on post-secondary transition: e.g. program info for schools we're considering, list of appointments and open houses, other lists & checklists (e.g. new support tools & strategies to start practising in Grade 12, to-do lists, deadlines etc). Simple interface, you can access and edit notes in your account across multiple platforms, invite others to access your notebook and email in or invite others to email in addtional info (emails automatically added to the Notebook as new notes, which you can later edit, integrate or delete). Great for managing large projects and team collaborating/coordinating (think home/school communication book!)- With the paid subscription, you can also allow others to edit your notes instead of just contributing notes via email. SIRI: This is the iPhone 4S's virtual assistant. Use voice commands to quickly set up appointments, reminders or Web queries on the go; use SIRI's voice-to-text capability to dictate emails, text messages and notes - you need to do voice training, especially if the individual has unusual speech pattersn, so start simple and work up - SIRI is "trainable", like the auto-correct feature that is so annoying on the on-screen keyboards initially - so it will eventually learn to get what you mean with practice. Dragon Go: Seach by voice on iPhone - extends SIRI functionality; or Dragon Dictation - voice to text iStudies Pro: All in one, planner/organizer that integrates with Mac's iCal and combines class schedules, tracking of assignments and grades, reminders & deadlines. We're still mastering the basics of having synced multiple (home, school, transition planning) calendars in iCal (record appointment details in iCal on the laptop and it will be automatically synced to your iPhone). Once he's comfortable, we'll switch to iStudiez. (other task managers to consider include Bento, Schedule Planner Pro, Things, 2Do (Simple interface, plus "Push Notifications" - i.e. reminders), iHomework (track grades, manage assignments), or Grades2 (just track grades). Free Wi-Fi Finder: Find free Wi-Fi hotspots nearby to minimize data usage Onavo: Tracks cellular data usage and compresses all uploads/downloadsdata to reduce data plan usage.
Find My iPhone: If you lose your iphone, sign in to your Apple account from any computer to locate your iphone's GPS signal on a map - options include sending a message to whoever has it, causing it to emit a loud sound, remotely locking the phone or wiping all your data. Others iPhone apps that I've listed based on research and recommendations, but have not yet tried: - Genius Scan: scan document pages, capture blackboard, flipchart notes (there are several scanner apps, but this one supposedly allows you to correct imperfect image angles to make it easier to read)
- AudioNote: Records lectures while you take notes (iPad app)
- iPhone apps to create & use cue cards: gFlash+, Flashcards*, FlipCards or StudyBlue app [are there similar free Mac apps?]
- Mind mapping iPhone apps to organize thoughts - very helpful for larger projects: iThoughts HD, MindNode, iBlueSky [Mac versions?]
- e-Book or scanning/reading software that can import required reading material and add features to support comprehension, learning and facilitate required outputs (notes, assignments, exam prep tools). Look for apps with built-in tracking/highlighting features, bookmarks, text-to-speech and summarizing features)
- Algebra Touch: iPhone app helps to solve algebra equations
- Reference iPhone apps that encourage quick look-ups: Dictionary & thesaurus, Converter Plus (All in one calculator, coverts metric/imperial, currency, loan interest etc); Wikipedia, Atlases, Periodic Table of Elements etc etc
- Mint: Track spending, bank balances, budgets on the go.
- Password storage: Various apps that allow you to list all your passwords in an ecrypted file - so you only have to remember one master password
- College, university apps: SFU, UBC, etc all have their own iPhone apps which provide key info and links to help students fnd what they need on campus.
It's easy to get totally lost in the endless list of minimally useful apps out there, so we're searching for those with simple intuitive interfaces that integrate smoothly with core apps (email, DropBox, iCal) and that can perform and coordinate multiple functions to help reduce clutter and scatter.
