  • A Brother's Point Of View.  As everyone related to an autistic person knows, the challenges and requirements are unbelievable, and of course, all their time and effort must be put towards that person and barely anything else. As well as a burden to the parent or carer, this can also have a very negative effect on another sibling if there is one. Unfortunately, I am one of those other siblings.  Click here to read more

New research out of Michigan State University is showing promising results.

"Teaching parents to imitate their child's play, getting down on the floor, getting near where their child is and imitating what their child is doing," Ingersoll explains. "What they're doing with the toys, what they might be doing with their body, gestures they might be using, sounds, words they might be using." "Five minutes here, 10 minutes there, during daily interactions," she says. It's worked for Jonah. "He has actually dramatically improved," Randall says.  Click here to read more and see the video

ADD

ADD/ADHD

  • Father-Son Bonding: Learning to Love Your Child's ADHD.  After years of wishing my son could just be "normal," it took a father-son camping trip to help me understand his wonderful, inquisitive brain - and really delight in his unique perspective.  My son came into the world without a sound. He seemed perfect from the start, with bright, curious eyes that scanned the room, absorbing every detail. My wife and I named him Drew - meaning "intelligent," according to our baby name book - because we sensed he was a smart one. As I held him for the first time, I felt lucky to be the father of this perfect little boy.  Years passed, and I watched with dismay as Drew changed from that perfect child in the delivery room into a boy with significant developmental delaysClick here to read more

Down Syndrome

  • RISING UP FOR DOWNS PARENT NETWORKING GROUP

Thursday, February 9th, 2012  Place: 1409 Sperling Ave, Burnaby  Time: 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.Part One: Guest Speaker: Eleanor Stewart
Eleanor has worked at the Down Syndrome Research Foundation since 2008.  She is the lead teacher of the Reading and Communication Programs for young adults with developmental disabilities.  She also helps coordinate the One-to-One reading programs for all ages at the centre.  Before working at the DSRF, Eleanor worked at the Vancouver Learning Centre for four years doing one to one intervention with students who had a variety of learning difficulties.  In the last year, Eleanor has hosted seminars for teachers, SEA's and families to show techniques and strategies for teaching reading.
Eleanor will share our successful experience with practical application of the Oelwein approach for developing readers using high meaning sight words from students' personal experiences. A particular emphasis is using learned words to build sentences of increasing complexity that illustrate the use of verbs and joining words. Our focus is on making reading fun and meaningful to motivate beginning readers using personalized collections of reading materials with high interest themes and photos. Strategies for teaching consonant sounds and word families will also be discussed. This approach to reading can be used successfully with preschoolers to adult learners of all abilities.

  • Fifth National Biennial Conference on Adolescents and Adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: It's a Matter of Justice. This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

Education

Education

  • Self-regulation - A growing concern in elementary settings.  The ability of young children to control or regulate their energy states in order to pay attention and learn, is rapidly becoming a skill of the past. Many educators are reporting increasing incidence of child "dysregulation", or uncontrolled behaviors such as impulsivity, aggression, and tantrums, especially around times of transition from one task to the next. Children today don't appear to know how to cope with even minor stresses or slight changes in routine, and have frequent melt-downs or "I can't!" when asked to do a task they have never attempted before.   Click here to read more

Click here to read more.
