FASD

FASD

  •  Neurocognitive Habilitation Therapy for Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: An Adaptation of the Alert Program.  In an attempt to improve the daily functioning of children prenatally exposed to alcohol, we developed a group treatment approach, termed neurocognitive habilitation, that teaches children to recognize individual deficit areas and to develop strategies to compensate for areas of weakness, all while building on existing skills and strengths. The development of this group treatment model integrated techniques and interventions used in therapy for traumatic brain injury (TBI; Dykeman, 2003) with components of the Alert Program (Williams & Shellenberger, 1996), a curriculum that helps children improve self-regulatory skills by teaching them first how to identify their arousal level and then how to choose appropriate interventions to alter their arousal level on the basis of situational demands. Neurocognitive habilitation is based on the premise that difficulties with self-regulation contribute to the day-to-day challenges experienced by children with FAS and ARND, including executive functioning deficits. The study described in this article tested the hypothesis that neurocognitive habilitation group therapy services would improve executive functioning and emotional and social problem-solving skills in children with FAS and ARND.  Click here to read more

  • An APP F ASD Retreat for adoptive parents of people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder

You are invited to our fourth annual parent retreat for adoptive parents of children,
youth, or adults who are suspected of having or have been diagnosed with a Fetal Alcohol
Spectrum Disorder (FASD). As a parent-led organization, we know the importance for
parents to have a chance to come together with those who understand and care.

This retreat is planned to provide opportunities to share stories of challenges
and triumphs, to listen and to learn, and to enjoy time away. Most important, though, is
the chance to develop friendships and support. We hope that you will find a way to
join us at this retreat planned just for you.

While we realize that finding child care can
be difficult, the event is for adults only.

  • Fifth National Biennial Conference on Adolescents and Adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: It's a Matter of Justice. This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

In Managing Emotions, students will learn about their emotions and emotional regulation skills, including ...

          • Identifying the size of the problem

Suitable for school-aged children and teens with a diagnosis of High Functioning Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, or those needing extra support to be more successful in the social world.
Costs are $660 (8 sessions) at our Child Care Worker rates and are eligible under BC's Autism Funding. Behavioural assessment may be required prior to initial entry. Children will be grouped based on the following age/ability clusters: 9-12, and 13-16.

Childhood developmental disorders such as ADHD, ODD, and other mental
health problems such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, etc. can
all be traced to either negative childhood experiences or the absence of
sufficiently positive ones. Addiction and adult mental health issues also flow
    from the same source.
The impact of the environment on brain development is discussed, along
with ways of recognizing and helping to heal the negative consequences of
early loss. Also discussed is the impact of peer orientation, as articulated in
    Hold On To Your Kids.

This conference will stimulate dialogue, reflection, a deeper understanding of a child's total development as rooted in their earliest relationships, and may revolutionize our approaches and practices with young children, their families, and their communities.

  • Inspiring Kids to Love Their Differences by Karen Walrond.

When they're upset because other kids are picking on them for some attribute or another, we should point out the positive side of their differences (how they make them more sensitive or caring, for example), or simply reiterate the characteristics that make our kids generally awesome. And we should do this as frequently as possible, so that eventually, one day, our kids see -- and believe -- the unmitigated power in their differences, and learn to use those differences for good and not evil.

Because I'm convinced that as parents, we all have the opportunity and the power to raise superheroes.

Even if they also happen to be beauty queens.  Click here to read more
