  • Local Boy Donates "Hug Machine"

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The children who suffer from Autism in the Rochester community have just gotten a gift that normally costs thousands of dollars, but in this case it may literally be priceless. And that gift is thanks to someone who's barely a teenager. Adam Welker, 13, says his goal is to become an Eagle Scout, but that mission may have just ended up benefiting hundreds of children with Autism. For his Eagle Scout Program, Welker built what's commonly referred to as a "hug machine" which is used specifically for people with autism.  Click here to read more and see the video!

  • Tony Attwood Video: In this video segment, leading autism professional, Dr. Tony Attwood addresses three key questions: Can NT kids learn Aspie behavior from an Aspie parent?; Is there a link between Munchhausen Syndrome and ASD?; How do Aspies and NTs differ in dealing with grief?  Click here to see the video!

  • TEDx TALKS: Ami Klin - Autism: Disruptions in Early Human Social Adaptation Mechanisms.  World renowned autism authority Dr. Ami Klin takes a deeper look at autism beyond its widely acknowledged genetic origins. He explores how autism results when the evolutionarily conserved and developmentally early emerging mechanisms of social adaptation, such as the mutually reinforcing choreography between infant and caregiver, are disrupted.  Click here to see Dr. Ami Klin!
  • Navigating Love and Autism.  The first night they slept entwined on his futon, Jack Robison, 19, who had since childhood thought of himself as "not like the other humans," regarded Kirsten Lindsmith with undisguised tenderness.  She was the only girl to have ever asked questions about his obsessive interests - chemistry, libertarian politics, the small drone aircraft he was building in his kitchen - as though she actually cared to hear his answer. To Jack, who has a form of autism called Asperger syndrome, her mind was uncannily like his. She was also, he thought, beautiful.  Click here to read more!  AND SEE THE VIDEOS!
  • Training tool helps autistic people become face aces.  Sitting in front of a computer, 17-year-old Patrick Dwyer was engrossed in a game. One hand deftly manipulated the mouse, but the muscles in his face were getting a workout - twisting and stretching to register fear, delight, anger.  Making faces is the object of the game: To navigate FaceMaze, Mr. Dwyer had to mimic the expressions of his avatar's opponents on the screen. A small video camera captured his image, feeding a powerful software program that can read faces.  Click here to read more

ADD

ADD/ADHD

  •  Is It Executive Function Disorder (EFD) or ADD/ADHD?  Children and adults with executive function disorder (EFD) have problems with organizing and schedules. They may also have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) and/or learning disabilities, but not always. ADHD is a common misdiagnosis for those who are actually living with EFD.   A child or an adult with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) might be hyperactive, inattentive, and/or impulsive. Clinicians have always understood hyperactivity and impulsivity. The understanding of inattention, though, has shifted from primarily "the inability to stay on task" to a broader concept called executive function disorder (EFD), which involves a pattern of chronic difficulties in executing daily tasks.  Click here to read more

FASD

  • David Boulding Lawyer from British Columbia advises parents of sons with FASD on the 'Rules of Sex'

Here are the rules for sex:

    1. Only have sex with people the same age as you.
    2. Before you start sex make sure everyone says "yes" out loud.

Sex is always a difficult topic because every time you and I discuss sex we reveal more about ourselves than we do about the specific selected sexual topic. It is like criticizing Shakespeare; you are being read not the Bard of Avon!  Click here to read more

  • Athlete delivers words of faith. Special Olympian has excelled on courts of all sorts.

The fourth- and fifth-graders at Wauwatosa Catholic were excited Dec.1 to hear the words of inspiration and motivation from Cindy Bentley.  The Special Olympian, whose life has been lived as a triumph over adversity, did not disappoint.  She patiently answered a stream of questions ranging from "What is your favorite sport?" to what was it like to meet the president.  Afterward, the students clamored for more, asking for autographs. She patiently signed for each of them.Click here to read more

As such, they may not recognize the signals leading up to a big emotional event and don't use proactive emotional regulation strategies to prevent a meltdown. In Managing Emotions, students will learn about their emotions and emotional regulation skills, including ...

          • Anger management
          • Problem solving
          • Identifying the size of the problem
          • Managing Worries
          • Dealing with the Sillies
          • Relaxation strategies
        • Flexibility and coping
SOCIAL SUCCESS GROUPS are dynamic group teaching programs that are held weekly at our clinic. In each 2-hour group session, participants spend time learning specific skills related to Managing Emotions, followed by the opportunity to practice and generalize these skills in a fun activity with some coaching. Suitable for school-aged children and teens with a diagnosis of High Functioning Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, or those needing extra support to be more successful in the social world.
Costs are $660 (8 sessions) at our Child Care Worker rates and are eligible under BC's Autism Funding. Behavioural assessment may be required prior to initial entry. Children will be grouped based on the following age/ability clusters: 9-12, and 13-16.

  • The Children's Foundation is proud to present: Gabor Mat, MD, The Biology of Loss: What Happens When attachments Are Impaired and How to Foster Resilience
This presentation outlines the mental health implications of early childhood
emotional loss, whether due to abuse in the family or simply of stress on the
parents, on the subsequent loss of attunement with the child.
Childhood developmental disorders such as ADHD, ODD, and other mental
health problems such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, etc. can
all be traced to either negative childhood experiences or the absence of
sufficiently positive ones. Addiction and adult mental health issues also flow
    from the same source.
The impact of the environment on brain development is discussed, along
with ways of recognizing and helping to heal the negative consequences of
early loss. Also discussed is the impact of peer orientation, as articulated in
    Hold On To Your Kids.

    Conference Description:

Our early relationships and experiences shape all aspects of physical and mental health, and are pivotal to who we become and how we function throughout life. We naturally strive forward. The behaviour of young children is meaningful, and understanding this concept is vital for all involved with children. This conference will stimulate dialogue, reflection, a deeper understanding of a child's total development as rooted in their earliest relationships, and may revolutionize our approaches and practices with young children, their families, and their communities.

  • B.C. program offers independence to people with intellectual disabilities.

Callan Parker has what some people call a "diversability." Born with Down's Syndrome, Ms. Parker has grown into an 18-year-old fashionista with a passion for dancing, Facebook and pop singers such as Hilary Duff.  But like many people her age, she's at a crossroads. High school is over and the path to a job and independent living is uncertain. The roadmap is getting clearer, though.  Ms. Parker is enrolled in an eight-month course at the University of British Columbia designed to help people with intellectual disabilities find their own way. Launched in September, the Canadian Inclusive Lives Learning Initiative (CILLI) is a pilot program in which participants learn about decision-making, employment, financial literacy, legal matters and how to access outside resources.  Click here to read more
