More importantly, children need to have the opportunity to use the social skills they have learned. Kids Friendship Club is a program that provides a natural setting where children will be learning and practicing the social skills through playing, chatting, snacking, outing, and more.

- How do you discipline a child with Asperger's Syndrome? Dr. Tony Attwood. I tragically see a number of teachers saying "it's a matter of discipline!" Well, okay. Certainly having AS is not a license to do whatever you want to do, and there must be natural consequences. But my view is, with the child with AS, you must spend more time explaining what they did that was wrong, why it was wrong, what you are supposed to do, and how to know when you are supposed to do it. ADD/ADHD - ADHD from the kid's prospective? I know it can be pretty challenging for the parent dealing with an ADHD child...but ever wonder what it's like from the child's point of view? I'm here to share. I wanted to give parents of ADHD children and teens the chance to develop an understanding through the "kids" point of view. One of the things I never really received. Parents aren't the only ones being affected by the condition..It affects us just as much. I mean, we ARE the ones battling it, and it makes it worse when the parent doesn't have an understanding.
So, I just wanted to give the parents a change to ask me any questions they have about their ADHD kids. How does it make us feel? Why school seems so overwhelming? Why we don't like taking our meds? Why we do this and act that way? (etc.) Any question, just throw it at me. I'll try and do my best to answer it. Share with you my experiences, how I dealt with them, and the success it brought me. - ADHD - Four Genes Linked To The Disorder. Four gene variants, all members of the glutamate receptor gene family, appear to be involved in vital brain signaling pathways in a sub-set of children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), researchers from the Center for Applied Genomics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia reported in the journal Nature Genetics. The authors add that their findings could help create drugs that target those pathways, offering potential therapies for ADHD patients with those specific gene variants. There are an estimated half-a-million American children with ADHD and these gene variants. Click here to read more

Down Syndrome
- The Down Syndrome Research Foundation is pleased to offer two levels of Baby Signing Time classes starting January 2012. These classes are designed for babies and toddlers and their parents. The classes are approximately 45 minutes and the activities are music and play based. Bring baby, meet other parents and have fun together while we learn to incorporate sign into everyday routines. The course will be led by Patti Biwer, BA who is a certified Baby Signing Time Instructor. Patti has personal experience using sign language to develop early language skills with her young daughter who has Down syndrome. Susan Fawcett, Registered Speech Language Pathologist, will introduce the program with an evening presentation on Monday January 10th, which will discuss the use of sign language to support early language learning in children with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Both parents are encouraged to attend this informative session. Susan will also be on hand following a few of the classes to answer questions related to language development.
Group Size and Schedule: Each class is capped at 6 children (+ parent) ages 0-3 years.
This 6 week program meets on Fridays
Level 1 (Sign language beginners) Time: 10:00 to 10:45 am
Level 2 (Families wishing to expand their sign language skills) Time: 11:00 to 11:45 am

You are invited to our fourth annual parent retreat for adoptive parents of children,
youth, or adults who are suspected of having or have been diagnosed with a Fetal Alcohol
Spectrum Disorder (FASD). As a parent-led organization, we know the importance for
parents to have a chance to come together with those who understand and care.
This retreat is planned to provide opportunities to share stories of challenges
and triumphs, to listen and to learn, and to enjoy time away. Most important, though, is
the chance to develop friendships and support. We hope that you will find a way to
join us at this retreat planned just for you.
While we realize that finding child care can
be difficult, the event is for adults only.

Technology - Finding Good Apps for Children With Autism. The Apple iPad has been hailed as a savior for assisting children with autism spectrum disorder or other special needs. It was portrayed as a minor miracle in a recent segment on "60 Minutes" and has been found to help even the very young quickly learn....But as is the case with so many categories of apps, it's daunting to know where to begin when sorting through the thousands of programs available. "There are so many apps, and not all of them are great," said Shannon Des Roches Rosa of Redwood City, Calif., whose son, Leo, 11, has autism. To that end, several good Web sites have been created to review special-needs apps. Most of these sites are not driven by advertising nor do they receive referral fees for recommending apps: Click here for the list!

- Each small group will be supported by two leaders to enable play skills coaching and will feature a semi-structured format including a short circle, snack, open ended play, and an art opportunity.
- Costs are $660 for (8 sessions) at our Behavior Interventionist rates and are eligible under BC's Autism Funding.

This presentation outlines the mental health implications of early childhood
emotional loss, whether due to abuse in the family or simply of stress on the
parents, on the subsequent loss of attunement with the child.
Childhood developmental disorders such as ADHD, ODD, and other mental
health problems such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, etc. can
all be traced to either negative childhood experiences or the absence of
sufficiently positive ones. Addiction and adult mental health issues also flow
from the same source.
The impact of the environment on brain development is discussed, along
with ways of recognizing and helping to heal the negative consequences of
early loss. Also discussed is the impact of peer orientation, as articulated in
Hold On To Your Kids.
