  •  Remembrance Day Autism Style.  By Lisa Dea

    I Remember....

I remember when life was simple, and fun...and easy.

I remember when a laugh was cute and not a triumph.  When sharing a quiet book before bed was, well, normal.

I remember when dinner could mean take out on Fridays, when casein was a foreign word and gluten was only in bread. Baking wasn't a science experiment and forgetting to read the label meant pink sock not meltdowns.  Click here to read more

  • Finding the right home for your adult child with autism.  Marianne Ehlert of Protected Tomorrows works with the families of people on the autism spectrum to plan for adult living. Available options for people on the autism spectrum vary from state to state and individual to individual. Possibilities range from complete independence to institutional living. Figuring out just what a particular individual needs, where to find it, and how to fund it, can be a complex process. Click here to read more.

  • How do I help my Aspie son prepare for a career?  "I think that I want to be a chef," Daniel announced on the way home from a visit with family one morning.

My first reaction to Daniel's announcement was a visualization of Daniel in the high pressure environment of a commercial kitchen. The barking orders, the time constraints, the need to get the dishes right, hot and presented on time seemed to be a perfect match for Daniel. Well, for Daniel's weaknesses that is. Daniel doesn't handle pressure well. He doesn't respond positively to blunt, curt orders. He doesn't communicate in short clear cut phrases. When pushed to increase his speed, he breaks down completely.  Click here to read more

  •  WEB-EXCLUSIVE: Special in more than one way: student, adoptive mother of six shares her story.  When Taci Garner, student, married her husband Dan, she inherited three children from his first marriage. Eight years ago, they decided their family was still incomplete and chose to adopt three more children - all of whom have special needs.

One by one, Arrissia, 12, Samuel, 11, and Cody, 10, left foster care and became members of the Garner family.  Click here to read more

  • Fetal Alcohol Disorders often mistaken for ADHD.  A new study shows that children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are often initially diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) because the two problems can manifest in similar ways, Forbes reports.  The researchers found that children with FASD have more difficulty interpreting social information than children with ADHD, which results in more severe behavioral problems. The study also found that children with FASD have a high risk of psychiatric problems.  Click here to read more

  • An APP F ASD Retreat for adoptive parents of people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder

You are invited to our fourth annual parent retreat for adoptive parents of children,

parents to have a chance to come together with those who understand and care.

This retreat is planned to provide opportunities to share stories of challenges
and triumphs, to listen and to learn, and to enjoy time away. Most important, though, is
the chance to develop friendships and support. We hope that you will find a way to
join us at this retreat planned just for you.

be difficult, the event is for adults only.

parents, on the subsequent loss of attunement with the child.
Childhood developmental disorders such as ADHD, ODD, and other mental

with ways of recognizing and helping to heal the negative consequences of

This conference will stimulate dialogue, reflection, a deeper understanding of a child's total development as rooted in their earliest relationships, and may revolutionize our approaches and practices with young children, their families, and their communities.
