Help a Parent?
- From a mom to all parents: Mayim Bialik apologizes to her kids...for not being perfect. I am not perfect. As a mom, I mess up a lot. Despite me writing confidently about parenting for websites, magazines, and speaking publicly about attachment and holistic parenting, and even despite having a book on parenting coming out in March (it's called "Beyond the Sling," by the way!) it is clear to most people who know me and/or live with me that I am not perfect. My first son made me a mother 6 years ago and everything I do as his mother, I am doing for the first time. My second son has a once-through-the-ringer mama caring for him, but I am humbled to admit that I still make some of the same mistakes I made with my first son again with my second. And that's just the truth. Click here to read more

- With thanks to Kelly: What They Didn't Tell Me About My Child's Autism. Here are some things you will not find in your research on autism: You will not learn how this diagnosis will affect your marriage or other members of your family. You will not be told how it may fundamentally alter your perceptions of what is "normal," how it may change your view of human beings, how it can force you to question small talk and why we behave the way we do, how it will transform your outlook on life, how it will change you, how your life and everything you assumed to be true, is no longer what you thought. Click here to read the full article.
- 12 important needs of siblings and tips to address these need. 1. SIBLINGS NEED COMMUNICATION THAT IS OPEN, HONEST, DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE, AND ONGOING. Parents may need to deal with their own thoughts and feelings before they can effectively share information with siblings. Children may show their stress through their withdrawal or through inappropriate behaviors. Siblings may be reluctant to ask questions due to not knowing what to ask or out of fear of hurting the parent. While doing research on siblings, Sandra Harris found that developmentally appropriate information can buffer the negative effects of a potentially stressful event (Harris, 1994). - STUDY: My name is Kristin Cleary, and I am a fourth year student at Douglas College finishing my degree in Therapeutic Recreation. I am currently doing a research paper in the field of Autism, specifically Aspergers. I am looking for parents willing to take some time to
either fill out a small survey or attend a focus group. The research paper focuses on the parents of children with Aspergers and the gaps in the availability and allocation of resources (government funding, hiring interventionists etc.) as well as their feedback with the diagnoses process. If you are interested in being apart of this process I would be happy to explain the survey and have those interested fill it out anonymously.
I appreciate your time in getting back to me,
Sincerely, Kristin Cleary

FASD - FASD often an 'invisible impairment'. Often when we think of those who are homeless, we think of the mentally ill, the addicted and perhaps the physically impaired.
One group that rarely gets recognized is those with FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder). Their condition is caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy, which can result in physical and mental disabilities. The effects can vary greatly and are difficult to diagnose. Yet it is estimated 1% of all of us have some affects of FASD. The damage to the brain can result in many problems, including learning disabilities, lack of impulse control and social perception.Click here to read more
- An APP F ASD Retreat for adoptive parents of people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
You are invited to our fourth annual parent retreat for adoptive parents of children, youth, or adults who are suspected of having or have been diagnosed with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). As a parent-led organization, we know the importance for parents to have a chance to come together with those who understand and care.
This retreat is planned to provide opportunities to share stories of challenges and triumphs, to listen and to learn, and to enjoy time away. Most important, though, is the chance to develop friendships and support. We hope that you will find a way to join us at this retreat planned just for you.
While we realize that finding child care can be difficult, the event is for adults only.

- The Children's Foundation is proud to present: Gabor Maté, MD, The Biology of Loss: What Happens When attachments Are Impaired and How to Foster Resilience
This presentation outlines the mental health implications of early childhood emotional loss, whether due to abuse in the family or simply of stress on the parents, on the subsequent loss of attunement with the child. Childhood developmental disorders such as ADHD, ODD, and other mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, etc. can all be traced to either negative childhood experiences or the absence of sufficiently positive ones. Addiction and adult mental health issues also flow from the same source. The impact of the environment on brain development is discussed, along with ways of recognizing and helping to heal the negative consequences of early loss. Also discussed is the impact of peer orientation, as articulated in Hold On To Your Kids.
