Autism
- Kate Winslet campaigns for autism education. KATE Winslet's star power is providing a golden opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those with autism.
How can you talk about your child without bursting into tears?" asks Kate Winslet. Those beautiful eyes I know so well from the big screen search mine, trembling with sadness.
"Because I'd never stop," I mumble in reply. Suddenly Winslet isn't the big movie star; she's one mother talking to another about a very real sadness we all risk when we have a baby - what if the child isn't OK? One of the most wonderful moments as a parent is watching your baby sleep in their crib as you imagine all the amazing things they're going to do, all the experiences they're going to have. Will they grow up to be a doctor? An athlete? An architect? When one of my twin boys was diagnosed with autism in 2003, at 18 months old, all those dreams vanished into thin air. Band, uninterrupted. When it comes to rock band Rudely Interrupted, the personality outshines the disability. They sound like any indie rock band. Unlike other bands though, five of the six members in Melbourne-based Rudely Interrupted have a range of medical disabilities, including Asperger's Syndrome, Down's Syndrome, epilepsy, deafness and blindness. But that doesn't mean you should diss their ability, said lead singer/guitarist Rory Burnside. Said the 24-year-old: "It's wrong to automatically assume that these people are disabled so they're going to be no good." Click here to read more
- Scout Earns 132 Merit Badges. Nate Christensen is 17 years old. He plays the trumpet in his high school marching band and loves playing "Just Dance" on the family's Nintendo Wii. He took a good friend to the homecoming dance. He looks forward to graduating from high school. He completed 132 merit badges in the Boy Scouts of America scouting program. He also happens to be autistic. Click here to read more
- Young people with autism 'need legal right to educational support'. Young people with autism have described their desire to learn the skills to help them achieve independence later in life, Ambitious About Autism has reported. The charity has warned that unless young disabled people have a legal right to educational support up to the age of 25, many will be unable to gain the skills needed for their future and will become a subsequent financial burden to adult social services. - Bilingualism doesn't hamper language abilities of children with autism: UBC research. Bilingual children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) acquire vocabularies just as rich as monolingual children with ASD, according to research by a bilingualism expert at the University of British Columbia.
Parents in bilingual families often decide to speak only one language, typically English, around their child with ASD because of advice from child development professionals who believe that exposure to two languages might further limit the child's communication skills. Click here to read more.
- From Linda Hodgdon: My grandchildren love my tech toys. It's amazing how their generation is growing up on video and audio and earphones. There has been so much press lately about noise-induced hearing loss that I've been concerned about how high they set the volume when listening with earphones. It's impossible to keep everything set at what I think is a safe volume.Well, I just found some earphones that will ease my concerns. Protective EarGear Headphones have a built-in volume control knob to limit volume to safe levels. They are a must for children in the car, on the plane or hanging out at home or in school listening stations. Check out Tune A Fish Protective Ear Gear Children's Headphones, Here

Volunteers Wanted for a Research Study UBC
PARENTAL SELECTION OF COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN
The goal of this study is to try and understand how parents choose to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies for their children with autism. CAM therapies are typically therapies that are not offered within conventional health care settings and include therapies such as herbal remedies, naturopathic medicine, or mind-body therapies. We plan to share our results with other researchers, health care workers and service providers to deliver better care to families of children with autism.
To be eligible for this study you must:
- be a parent, both mothers and fathers, or guardian of a child/children with autism between the ages of 2 and 16 years who has been clinically diagnosed with autism
- have used at least one CAM therapy for their child
- live in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia
- speak and understand English
If you agree to take part in the study, you will be asked to fill out a survey about your child's use of CAM; this should take about 30 minutes. You will then meet with a researcher in a quiet location, such as your home, at a time that is convenient for you, who will ask you questions about why you decided to use CAM therapies for your child. The interview will last no more than 1 hour. Your total expected time commitment to participate in this study is 2 hours
If you are interested in participating or learning more about this study, please contact Ms. Tara Hodgson either by telephone at 604-946-8149 or email here

ADD/ADHD - New treatment guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics say that Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be diagnosed in kids as young as four years of age, down from six years in its previous guidelines. The new guidelines were released today both in the journal Pediatrics and at the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) annual meeting in Boston, also today. The presenters said the first treatment approach for preschoolers should be behavioral management techniques (rather than medication). Click here to read more

- A Mom Stands Up To Teens Who Use The Word "Retard".
"That kid's a retard. A total f**g retard."
I froze mid-motion when I heard those words. I'd left my husband with our three small children so I could have some time alone at our town pool to swim some laps.
As I'd walked in, I'd seen a bunch of teenage male lifeguards by the snack bar, snickering. I hadn't bothered to pay attention to them until their voices reached me. Click here to read more

FASD - Newly completed FASD Cookbook and DVD Set. West Coast Alternate Cook Book - Volumes One and Two (West Coast Alternate School: Vancouver)
West Coast Alternate is a school designed to work with students with FASD. The inspiration for this cookbook came from a cooking class. When one of the students wondered if they would remember all the recipes from the classes, the group thought it would be a great idea to put a cookbook together with images to help. This is a look and cook cookbook. It has written text as well as images to help guide the beginner chef. Students and staff from West Coast Alternate created the cookbook.
The set includes Volume 1 and 2 Cookbooks and accompanying DVDs.
To order contact David Delorme email here or Donna Mah email here or you can phone 604-412-7950 or 604-412-7961; cost is $20.00 (includes DVD)

Problem behavior can significantly interfere with and limit educational and social opportunities, negatively impact family functioning, and if not addressed can limit overall community integration experiences. PARENTING IN A DIGITAL WORLD by Dr. Gordon Neufeld
Online presentation
5pm - 7pm PST
This was the topic of Dr. Neufeld's keynote at the Vancouver Annual Parenting Conference in May 2011. The response was overwhelming and so we decided to ask Dr. Neufeld to do this once again online. The digital revolution has happened so quickly that it has caught most of us off guard and has significantly changed the challenges of parenting. Dr. Neufeld not only explains the drive underlying today's digital technology but also points to a way through.
The digital world is here to stay, changing our society in ways that have far reaching consequences for our children. What are the implications for parenting? How do we harness the spectacular connecting potential and yet avoid the pitfalls of attachment technology gone awry? How do we prepare them to live in this new world and yet preserve what is required for healthy development to take place? We have followed our children into the digital world and yet for their sakes as well as ours, we need to restore our lead in order to avoid insidious dangers that live in the shadows of this potent technology. Dr. Neufeld will look at the digital revolution as a developmentalist committed to helping parents help their children become all they were meant to be. Click here to register

The behaviour of young children is meaningful, and understanding this concept is vital for all involved with children. This conference will stimulate dialogue, reflection, a deeper understanding of a child's total development as rooted in their earliest relationships, and may revolutionize our approaches and practices with young children, their families, and their communities.
- The 15th annual Children the Heart of the Matter conference will be held on February 3rd & 4th 2012. This conference is gearing up to be another excellent event with keynote speakers Gordon Neufeld and Charlotte Diamond. Click here for more information and on-line registrtation
