Autism
- Halloween for children with autism. Halloween is considered among most kids as one of the best holidays of the year. Dressed up as their favorite character or superhero, kids are allowed to be something fantastical for an evening and go to strangers houses and ask for candy, the very thing kids are told not to do every other day of the year. Staying up late, children fill their mouths with chocolate and sweet delights and then, well past their bedtimes, succumb to a sugar coma. For kids with autism, however, Halloween often turns out to be much more tricky and not always a treat. Click here to read more

"What advice can you give to a parent who for the first time hears those words, "your child has autism". Jama Lambert: What advice can you give to a parent who for the first time hears those words, "your child has autism".
Dr. DeMio: "Being a practitioner, I never forget when a person comes to me and their child is newly diagnosed and you get these little toddlers who are supposed to be the little rising star of the family. It's devastating. Your hopes and dreams seem shattered. As a practitioner, it's important for the parents to know that there is hope. They are often told that their child is not going to do well, that they are not going to have a good life. Many of the parents are still told to institutionalize their child, that there is no hope for autism, they will never get better, never function, and a bunch of "nevers", as Theresa Wrangham puts it (they will never talk, never walk, never get out of diapers, never live on their own, never get a job or never go to college). Many people walking around here [at the US Autism & Asperger Association annual conference] are proof that's not true." Click here to read more and see the interview

- BC Girl Featured in Dove's "One Girl Can" Campaign The Dove Self Esteem Fund recently held a competition looking for inspirational girls across Canada called "One Girl Can" to be featured in a book of the same name. Miranda Yates was one of 14 lucky girls who were given the honour - they were flown to Toronto and given the full star treatment. Miranda's mother Barb, who nominated her, told us this:
"It was a fabulous weekend. They flew us out to Toronto. The girls got the full meal deal; pedicures and manicures; workshops; interviewed by the author of the book; professional photo shoot (hair makeup and clothing). I have to admit I went with a little bit of trepidation but Miranda did great. Her service dog was her ice breaker for a lot of the girls. Towards the end of the weekend, two Moms came to me and said their daughters have never been personally involved with an individual with disabilities and they were impressed with what Miranda had accomplished and how well she fit in. After all she is a teenager just like them. That was pretty cool." The book is available at Wal-Mart in the Dove aisle. Congratulations Miranda from everyone at CDSS! see photo here

Exciting events across B.C. draw out citizens who care about common issues. Neighbours and friends help with city clean-ups, food bank drives, pay-it-forward days, community festivals and celebrations and employer recognition breakfasts. Throughout the month of October, individuals and groups across the province are hosting activities that bring all citizens together to celebrate inclusion and diversity. Visit the BCACL website for more information about the month and to view a list of events. - Delta Community Living Society: Hope to see you there! I'll be there from 10 -12
