Help
Help a Parent?
  • When the Rare Disease Foundation Parent group started meeting, an issue that came up was the lack of personal support for parents as they cope with the stresses of caring for a child with a rare disease.  A number of people mentioned that they have sought or would like access to psychological or social counselling for themselves concerning how to deal with their child's condition. The Rare Disease Foundation has received a small amount of money to assist parents seeking counselling. To use this money effectively, we would like your opinions about the kinds of support that would be most useful.
Attached is a link to a survey that will help us to use the limited money in a way that would be most beneficial.  "RDF" refers to the Rare Disease Foundation.  Please take the time to complete the survey, which is of course, anonymous.  We will let you know the results of the survey.
    Thank you for your help.

  • BBC Press: Blind autistic man stuns the music world.  Derek Paravicini was born prematurely 32 years ago, and doctors did not think he would survive.  He is blind and severely autistic, but has a unique talent that has stunned the music world - he can play any piece of music after hearing it only once.  Now he is to make make musical history when he performs a concerto written especially for him at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall.  Tim Muffett met him.  Click here to see the video

  • Young football player with Aspergers scores special touchdown.Ask the parents of a special needs child what hurts them the most, and I'm willing to bet you won't hear them talking about themselves. It's not the extra work. It's not the change in lifestyle. It's seeing their kids denied the chance to do the same things their so-called "normal" peers enjoy. And that is what makes the story of Evan Reeder, a teen with autism who ran a touchdown in the end zone at a high school football game, so incredible. Click here to read more  and then  Click here to see the video
  • Not all those who wander are lost - sometimes, they're just autistic.  Recently I came across a bracelet in a magazine with this quote: "Not all those who wander are lost - J.R.R. Tolkien." It has stuck in my mind for days. I have seen this quote many times before but for some reason this time it really hit home. My first thought was, "That's right, some are just autistic!"  When Matt was young he used to wander. It would happen when we were in a group of people such as a family gathering or at Cub Scouts. If we were outside then Matt would slowly walk to the periphery and circle us. He kept track of where we were with quick glances out of the corners of his eyes. If we were indoors, Matt would walk from room to room until he found one void of people, bright lights and noise. There he would occupy himself with a simple activity such as practicing expressions with his reflection in a window. He was never out of ear shot. Yes, Matt wandered, but he was not lost.  Click here to read more
  • Video: Dr. Tony Attwood & girls with Asperger'.  In this report, Dr. Tony feels the 4:1 (boys to girls) ratio is inaccurate... he believes the actual ratio to be closer to 2:1. He calls out several reasons why girls are usually not diagnosed until later on in life. Dr. Tony also shares positive news such as Girls with Asperger's success in the workplace and he suggests several possible career paths. Click here to see the video
  • Gauging Autistic Intelligence: Asperger Syndrome.  Autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger syndrome, have generally been associated with uneven intellectual profiles and impairment, but according to a new study of Asperger individuals published in the online journal PLoS ONE, this may not be the case - as long as intelligence is evaluated by the right test. Both autistic and Asperger individuals display uneven profiles of performance in commonly used intelligence test batteries such as Wechsler scales, and their strongest performances are often considered evidence for deficits.  Click here to read more
  • Autistic and seeking a place in an adult world After early intervention and school support, how will autistic children navigate the transition to adulthood?  For weeks, Justin Canha, a high school student with autism, a love of cartoons and a gift for drawing, had rehearsed for the job interview at a local animation studio.  As planned, he arrived that morning with a portfolio of his comic strips and charcoal sketches, some of which were sold through a Chelsea gallery. Kate Stanton-Paule, the teacher who had set up the meeting, accompanied him. But his first words upon entering the office were, like most things involving Justin, not in the script.  "Hello, everybody," he announced, loud enough to be heard behind the company president's door. "This is going to be my new job, and you are going to be my new friends."  Click here to read more
  • ABA Learning Centre:  Is your child unusually anxious? Does "over-shyness", apprehension, or outright fear get in the way of your child's ability to be more independent and successful in everyday life? Dr. Judy Reaven's Facing Your FearsTM program is a group therapy approach to treating anxiety that has been demonstrated to be effective with children on the autism spectrum. Taking proven therapeutic principles that have been shown for decades to be effective in treating all manner of childhood anxiety problems, Dr. Reaven's program takes these powerful methods and adapts them specifically for the learning needs of children on the autism spectrum. These same methods would also be appropriate for all children suffering from social anxiety, and specific phobias, with or without an autism diagnosis.
The ABA Learning Centre will be offering this program for children ages 7 to 11 years old that experience significant stress/anxiety difficulties. The program is primarily intended for children on the autism spectrum, but is open to all children in the target age range.

ADD

ADD/ADHD

  • VANCOUVER SUN:  One parent's approach to controlling ADHD
Organization and routine get a positive result with this stressful disorder.

Philippa Fisher once dreaded September. As a mother of two children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, the start of school was fraught with fear and stress. Would mornings be the same nightmares of disorganization they experienced last year? Would the new teacher understand that her son needs help to stay on task?

Settling in to the routines of the school year can be tough for parents, but for parents of children with ADHD, tough isn't a big enough word.  Click here to read more

  • Homework Help! A System That Works for ADHD Children

Consistent routines provide the homework help children with ADHD and learning disabilities need.  Homework isn't easy for children with attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD). They have to copy assignments, bring home the right books, and keep track of due dates -- all difficult tasks for children with poor focus, attention, or memory.  Can you give your ADHD child some homework help? Yes! Create consistent routines at home and school and while it may take a few months for routines to become habits, the payoff will be in better work skills, a sense of accomplishment - and lots of after-school smiles.  Click here to read more

  • FASD's terrible toll can be curbed.  The editorial pointed out the harms that face our society related to alcohol use as B.C. and Vancouver Island face increased consumption. One consequence not mentioned in the article is fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Every year, approximately 3,000 infants are born in Canada with FASD. • Making Sense of Anxiety in our Children & Youth - September 30 Dr. Neufeld  Event details: This popular seminar will be made into a 4 hour videocourse geared towards
    parents, teachers and helping professionals.
Event description: There is currently an epidemic of anxiety affecting children of all ages. Various strategies are emerging on how to treat anxiety problems, but most interventions are hand-me-downs from adult treatment and are questionable in terms of their appropriateness with children. Making sense of anxiety is foundational to its cure. This is where Dr. Neufeld begins, putting the pieces of the anxiety puzzle together to reveal the roots deep in separation alarm. In mapping out the separation complex, Dr. Neufeld also reveals the relationship of anxiety to other common childhood issues including dominance, aggression and attention problems. Dr. Neufeld brings a fresh and promising perspective to one of our most troubling and perplexing human problems. Click here for more information

Prince George - October 20, 2011 (early registration deadline September 29)
Many people struggling with a mental illness are also struggling with an addiction.  Recovery for people coping with both of these issues is complicated because they affect each other and are intertwined.  Caregivers may often be at a loss for where to start - did the addictions cause the mental illness, did the mental illness cause the addictions or is there something else leading to both?  This workshop provides a framework for working systemically with both issues at the same time. Participants will explore the impact of both addiction and mental illness, an overview of the theoretical frameworks for both issues, and how to integrate strategies in a way that supports health and change.

  • The Prevention and Treatment of Problem Behavior
Presented by  Bridget Taylor, Psy.D., BCBA-D
Children with autism can present challenging behavior. For example, it is not uncommon for an individual with autism to engage in high rates of repetitive behavior, tantrum in the presence of demands, or engage in aggression or self injury when denied access to preferred activities. Problem behavior can significantly interfere with and limit educational and social opportunities, negatively impact family functioning, and if not addressed can limit overall community integration experiences. This talk will provide an overview of the potential reasons why problem behavior exists, assessment procedures, innovative interventions that match treatment to function, and practical strategies parents and teachers can implement to prevent the development of problem behavior. Case examples will be presented through lecture and videotapes to illustrate assessment, intervention and database outcomes.
